Ava Duvernay no longer on the Netflix Prince documentary series.

I looked to see if anyone posted this already, and didn't see anything. No reason is given for her departure, other than the usual "creative differences".

"“I like to surprise,” DuVernay says, avoiding specifics. She does note she’s no longer working on Netflix’s multipart Prince documentary, saying she had “creative differences” with the company after working for a year on the project. “It just didn’t work out,” she says. “There’s a lot of beautiful material there. I wish them well.”"

Wait, this article is two days old and only now someone noticed this? Back then the news of her doing this doc was all over the place.

This is devastating news to me. I trusted Ava’s creative insight more than whoever disagrees with her. This tells me that the powers that be have no clue.

I'm actually glad. She's just not a good filmmaker. She may have pleasantly surprised me, but she always seemed like an odd choice.

Hmm. So if I'm reading this correctly, she had differences with Netflix, NOT the Estate? Then again, I have to assume Netflix and the Estate are in tandem on what exactly they want from this multi-part series. If Netflix is sitting on all of this material, I have to assume another director will jump on this soon. Hopefully a good one.

Ava puts in a year's worth of work on a documentary, and then leaves because of "creative differences"?

Something in the water does not compute.

The two movies I've seen that she directed, Selma and 13th I thought were well-made.

Laughing because that was EXACTLY my first thought.

We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

While Wrinkle was terrible her documentary type films (When they see us!) are great and her name would have given it cred and a wider audience. This is a bad sign and I'm sure does not bode well for this project.

This explains why the "top secret" project hasn't been talked about lately. I was SO looking forward to an ULTRA private screening.

Now the only thing to look forward to is.

Ok, well I guess I was giving her a bum wrap. I only know her from A Wrinkle in Time. And it is god awful. I’ll have to check out her ducumentaries.

Creative differences? I think that's code for not keeping to a time schedule and budget for project. Or they want to focus on the addiction aspect?

I fear that this will now be a rehash of his 80's glory days full of associate commentary giving their version of the truth. I was looking forward to Duvernay doing this in his words and sourced almost exclusively from vault video/audio. Prince trusted her, but someone that is administering the Estate does not trust her creative input. Shame.

Except that everything that they have released thus far has been full of former associate commentary.

I am kind of relieved that she is off the Prince project. I mean, ever since I found out that she was in that Oprah the Snake Winfrey, Gayle King and those other black/whyte feminist/lesbian clique of Hollywierd - I grew leery of her heading this Prince Docuseries!

Same here, Duvernay has said some sideways stuff and I don't trust her judgement. Seems to be a Harpo lap dog.

My thoughts - and pure speculation - is that the estate didn't like the angle she was trying to spin the Prince story and subsesquently booted her.

This docu is very important for Prince's legacy. The hardcore fans of the Org know his history, but many young and old alike don't know much concerning his life and career.

My only hope is that they don't allow his name to be associated with politicized material again, after the dumpster fire that was Spike Lee's BlacKkKlansman closing scene.

Matter of fact, take this as a vote of no confidence on Spike if they're considering him. Those Michael Jackson documentaries he did sucked.
