Good. I was extremely worried that she would try to "woke" up his story instead of giving a nuanced picture of the man.

HOW DARE U defame three successful black women in the industry with that CRAP OF LIES! Even if they were in the LGBTQRSTUV clique! What does that have to do with the price of tea in China or their talent? Prince(r.i.p.) ADORED Ava & visa versa. Maybe one day I'll run into Ava & get the real reason.

I somewhat agree, but even tho her movies are really bad, the docu's she made are the oppossite and really good.
Still I'd like to see a seasoned director with a lot of experience in creating music/musical atrists docu's leading this project and not some hip flavor of teh week.

Same here, Duvernay has said some sideways stuff and I don't trust her judgement. Seems to be a Harpo lap dog.

My thoughts - and pure speculation - is that the estate didn't like the angle she was trying to spin the Prince story and subsesquently booted her.

This docu is very important for Prince's legacy. The hardcore fans of the Org know his history, but many young and old alike don't know much concerning his life and career.

My only hope is that they don't allow his name to be associated with politicized material again, after the dumpster fire that was Spike Lee's BlacKkKlansman closing scene.

Matter of fact, take this as a vote of no confidence on Spike if they're considering him. Those Michael Jackson documentaries he did sucked.

The old Spike gimmick of taking something inflammatory straight out the news, whether it was Rodney King for Malcolm X or Charlottesville for BlacKKKlansman, and jamming it in his movie to make it seem more relevant.

And the problem with Ava, well, let her words speak for themselves.

"According to Diane Nash, John Lewis, Andrew Young and the people on the ground who were there -- the citizens of Selma -- that's not their truth, but history is for each of us to interpret for ourselves, so anyone's opinion is valid, truly it is," DuVernay said. "This is my opinion, this is the way is I see it, the way that my collaborators see it."

Reality doesn't matter to Ava and her collaborators. LBJ is the white devil, Christianity is irrelevant to A Wrinkle In Time...imagine how she would've used Prince for her personal agenda.

I don't think she's capable of bringing the nuance that Prince's story needs. He thought, and behaved, way outside of the box.

Even when he was getting his most "political", near the end of his life, the way he approached everything was off script. If man was going to usurp God, man needed to keep the people in mind. Prince didn't care about politics, he cared for people. He wanted to alleviate the suffering. What happened with Travon wasn't a race issue, he thought it was a fashion issue. That it was a failure of their community that people saw a black kid in a hoodie and thought thug instead of a tech nerd like Mark Zuckerburg. He does the show in Baltimore and tells the crowd, next time he comes back, he wants to stay in one of their hotels. So black owned instead of corporate owned. He releases the song, and it isn't a song like We March from his youth, it was a sad groove with him floating over it all. One he thought had healing potential.

He wanted to get higher than race but he also realized that nobody else was helping his community in the way it needed. He tried to fill the gap and inspire others.

That's way different than the modern thought that everything is political and any difference in thought is a moral failing in need of correction.

I suppose I see your point. I can sorta see why some may find it distasteful for Spike using recent tragedies to tie up the plot of his movies but personally, I never had an issue with it. I just see it as a representation of how we as a society have come so far and made so much progress yet some things have not changed.

As for Ava Duvernay, I don't know much about her. However, from what little I have gathered of her, she comes across as one of those self-righteous types of liberals that is completely defined by her political alignment, a hypocritical one at that.

I don't really know who she is anyway?! What's really needed now is someone who actually knows Prince's musical history inside out otherwise it's just going to be another run of the mill speculatory bullshit hatchet job. Only experts in the Prince field should be on the research, involving the guys from Uptown would be good IMO.

"[H]er fantasy film"?!

A Wrinkle in Time is a book by Madeleine L' Engle. The author, herself, was a devout Episcopalian who made no bones about the fact that the book reflects her religious values. She also scoffed at the notion of it being a "fantasy" saying, "Nonsense about witchcraft and fantasy. First I felt horror, then anger, and finally I said, ‘Ah, the hell with it.’"

Any filmmaker who throws out a writer's intent and makes a film that injects themes and values that are antithetical to those of the author is a hack, at best, and a thief, at worst.

We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

Who cares about Duvernay ?
I don't know the fuck who she is, as 99.99% of people watching Netflix.
.
Why in hell would it take so long and would it be so hard to release a six part miniseries, with so much audio/ video material already existing?
.
Netflix just went to release an 8 part mini series about the abduction of little 4 years old Maddie McCann...And they have nothing new to say than we already knew.
.
I m sure anybody here with a knowledge of editing and Prince material could do a more interesting 6 part series about Prince, with love and objectivity.
.
This long time promised 6 parts show could have been a great vehicle to get new people/ former fans interested in Prince again.
.
Fuck Duvernay, nobody knows her, but please, don't make 10 years to get this released, this is ridiculous.
