Are a lot of Prince fans insane?

I wanna preface this by saying that I have been a Prince fan since the release of the "1999" album. I have spent thousands of dollars on his music and I will continue to buy everything that is released.

That being said, I am a member of a certain Prince group on Facebook. There are people in that group that say that Prince was a better guitar player than Hendrix, or that he is the greatest guitar player that ever lived. They also said that Prince was more influential than The Beatles.

Can they possibly believe that crap?

I have met quite a few people who say Prince was a better guitarist than Hendrix.
As for the Prince being more infulential than The Beatles? I disagree with that.Even though I think The Beatles aren't as great as they are made out to be,I can see that they were more influential

Why not? It's quite nice to disagree on some "sacred cow" topics sometimes smile

"Better" is such a bullshit term anyway when we're talking about art or music. Hendrix was great. Prince was great - pick your favourite. Both had their influences, their strengths and weaknesses. I'm a life-long guitar player, and I massively prefer Prince's playing to Hendrix, it's just personal taste really.

Even if you love the Beatles, I think views will vary so much depending on age. Clearly there's a specific generation of ageing musicians that never shuts up about what a big deal it was for them to catch the fab four on Ed Sullivan, inspiring them to pick up instruments or whatever. However I really think the Beatles' influence across later generations of pop music is heavily overstated. Yes, they were a pop phenomenon in the 60s but their studio albums are so variable and filled with musical dead-ends. For folk who grew up in the 80s or 90s, we didn't give much of a shit about The Beatles and their influence on our generation's music is not always clear. If anything I think it is time to stop exaggerating the Beatles musical legacy.

Anyway, fun to argue about. Prince fans love Prince, let's not act surprised.

People, in general, are insane. And most Prince fans are people. So yes, Prince fans are insane.

Though not for the reasons you stated.

It's not even an issue of "exaggerating their musical legacy". Fact is, The Beatles changed EVERYTHING. They changed the way people dressed, they changed the way that people talked, they changed the whole of pop culture.

I guess it depends on your interpretation of the word "influential" but every decade, every generation can boast of their own musical heroes who made a splash across all aspects of popular culture. It's pretty boring to just always point to the Beatles or Hendrix or whatever to stop a conversation dead in its tracks. For those of us who weren't there in the 60s, we have our own ideas on what were the greatest and most influential musicians, and let's be real - the Beatles weren't born in a vacuum either.

Hendrix and The Beatles are both wildly overrated by the mainstream. They're important to popular culture but Hendrix was sloppy live and The Beatles were always a case of great management/right place at the right time.

Oh my, the horror of Prince fans praising him, imagine that?!?! The Beatles and Jimi Hendrix paved the way of course and are always topping the polls with the greatest lists to the mainstream, but more people are now seeing how phenomenal Prince is on guitar with all the stuff popping up on youtube. The more I hear him play, I am blown away. So it is all subjective. Beatles fans are gonna say the Beatles are the greatest; Hendrix fans will say he is the greatest and so on and so on...etc. I tell ya, these threads sometimes, lol. eek

As others have said, fans of an artist will praise said artist, so that shouldn't be surprising. I can't comment on Prince vs Hendrix as guitar players - both are great but I know a lot more by Prince.

As for the Beatles, I think they're a steaming pile of shit. They're influential and legendary, of course, but the more their influence dies, the better, IMO.

Feel free to join in the Prince Album Poll 2018! Let'a celebrate his legacy by counting down the most beloved Prince albums, as decided by you!

Matter of taste, some people genuinely do think prince was better than Jimi, Jimi often played pretty sloppy and he only had until he was 28 to perfect his craft, prince had more time. I'll paraphrase Steve Vai who said that "i play guitar better technically than Hendrix but I am playing a style that he originated". I think that's important to point out. The guy who is the pioneer is usually not the guy who takes the craft to it's limits but he inspires others to. So was Prince better? he was different to my ears, not as sloppy in his absolute live-prime but he wasn't as original or groundbreaking on the instrument, as he said way back in 85, "there's only so many sounds you can make with a guitar, lord knows I've tried" as he scoffed at the Jimi comparisons.

Are the fans insane, any pop artist or even anyone who has some notoriety that can be called fame draws out the wierdos. I've seen it, I remember going to see spike lee accept an award, some lady got their late, she was obviously a few fries short of a happy meal and she looked devesated that she missed it, but she didn't even look like the kind of person who'd like Spike's films, middle aged white woman. John Lennon had a schizophrenic on his property in the documentary "Imagine" and the guy though john was sending him messages in his songs, John, in a foreshadowing of what would happen a few years later, was non-judgemental and accessible to the guy, even fed him. so, I'm sure Prince has as many nutty fans as all these other guys. Now,, you want to talk about nutty fans, don't get me started on bruce lee fans, of which I'm one, they are about the worst. And i guess, I have to lump myself in that group somewhere, maybe mildly insane.

Prince was pretty damn influential. Honestly when I listen to what's "popular" now or has been since his peak 80s prime, there is a definite paradigm shift in music before Prince vs. after Prince... Particularly how it is constructed and how it is delievered. And certainly modern pop stars like Bruno Mars paid deference to his personal impact on their art when he passed...

The thing is, though, most Prince fans hate all modern music. In fact, most of them pretty much started hating all modern music the second Prince stopped dominating the charts, so from that perspective and for that crowd The Beatles are always going to be seen as the more "influential" when trademarks of their sound and influence are less (maybe the least) predominant in 2019 than they were in, say, the 70s. But again, most (or at a lot) of Prince fans kind of wish we could go back to that 70s style anyway and hate all music post-Prince influence anyway, so radio now sounding more like Prince than the Beatles means very little to them anyway.

It’s all subjective.A lot of it depends on a person’s age and what was going on ,musically,in their day.I love the Beatles and I love Prince.I don’t feel the need to compare them or argue that one is “better” than the other.Comparison games are for kids biggrin

I wouldn't call those Prince fans insane, maybe they just love the man and think he's the greatest to them over anyone else, like most of his most devoted and loyal fans do, nothing wrong with that! By the way, did you ask those group of Facebook fans, in which you're a member of, these questions that you posted here, because it seems like that is where you should have sought your answers?

and it's not just fans who've been saying how great a guitarist he is over the years, even back in the 80's people were calling him one of the worlds greatest guitarists, journalists and critics. also, it was the journalists and critics who put him in that rare class as an artist, people forget now because it was so long ago but he really was placed in that class by the critics if not the fans. I still have the articles and the books where they call him everything under the sun, people were just totally in awe of Prince. Somehow we started taking him for granted and not being as impressed with him.

Prince was heavily influenced by beatles and hendrix .. it’s hard to call prince more influential when his work is highly derivative of them ... saying prince is better on guitar than hendrix is like saying prince is more funky than james brown ... it’s laughable ... and prince music as we know it simply would not exist without all the above mentioned artists

Why is it insane to argue Prince vs Hendrix? Prince was rediculously versitle.

Would you also think it isinsane to say Prince was a better guitar player than Clapton? Claption thought Prince was better than himself.

Prince was better than Jimi on guitar, by leaps and bounds.

If you want to compare them at the same age, I would say they were on par. But after 30 years of continued mastery over what Jimi had? There was just no comparison, and I love Jimi's guitar playing.

Prince had 30+ years longer than Jimi to hone his craft, and after that 30 years, you all really want to believe that Prince was not better?

I think Prince had a great feel, a wonderful tonal quality.

I agree with a previous poster, though, that his playing was more derivitive.
