Apparently, he did the same thing in NYC at Van Cleef and Arpels in 1985, only not at 3am, and he probably had the place cleared out before he arrived

Well, to be fair, post PR he really no longer went retail shopping during normal business hours. He would either have the store closed to the public, or as in this story, arrange to show up at 3 a.m.

He may have shopped for other jewelry besides engagement rings. He often had quite a bit of “bling” on himself as well

Yep and possibly for some others close to him.
