Can barely see the answers. #2 they have as B?? Should be A based on all of the Bios and Associate interviews...unless he really did have a fav BBQ place back then - before he became a vegetarian smile #5 is C, right? That should be correct, as he always mentioned Jimi as one of his idols.

I suspect this is based on 1984/85

I believe #2 is A but it wouldn't be 'TV' he was in to movies, going to theaters and playing home movies

.

And #5 no he said in his interview that it was Carlos Santana not Jimi Hendrix

I've read he used to go to Rudolph's BBQ in Minneapolis when he was still a meat eater and lived next door. They talked about it when the restaurant closed in June 2018.

I just found this thread about it https://prince.org/msg/7/432360

Yes, but I think he'd mentioned Jimi, and it was clear that he was emulating him in some of his style of playing and performing. Since Carlos was not a choice Jimi is the next best answer.

*

He did watch a lot of TV though - maybe the majority was VHS tapes, but I think he watched shows like SNL, and Susannah mentioned In Living Colour. Seems he liked the comedies, and he definitely watched the late night comedians - Dave Letterman, Johnny, and later Jay Leno.

As I recall, he never mentioned Jimi. Other people would ask him about comparisions between him and Jimmi and he'd respond by saying that he thought Santana was the more appropriate comparison.

That's it, I don't think he did. At least I've never read it. I think it is usually people assumptions that Jimi would be. He influenced a LOT of guitarists. Joni Mitchell would have been a more interesting choice.

.

What do you think about the comparisons between you and Jimi Hendrix?

It's only because he's black. That's really the only thing we have in common. He plays different guitar than I do. If they really listened to my stuff, they'd hear more of a Santana influence than Jimi Hendrix. Hendrix played more blues; Santana played prettier. You can't compare people, you really can't, unless someone is blatantly trying to rip somebody off. And you really can't tell that unless you play the songs.

.

You've got to understand that there's only so much you can do on an electric guitar. I don't know what these people are thinking -- they're usually non-guitar-playing mamma-jammas saying this kind of stuff. There are only so many sounds a guitar can make. Lord knows I've tried to make a guitar sound like something new to myself.

.

I'm not saying he didn't watch TV, but if you read most interviews by people in the camp from Fargnoli, to Revolution members, Jill Jones, Susan Rogers etc Prince watched a LOT of film especially 1940s 1950s films. And going to theater. The Uptown theather, Prince talked about almost living there. And he later rented out movie theaters regularly. Even to watch Purple Rain over again. In Living Color did not come on until 1990.

Again when it comes from 'Inspiration' for songs, Movies and __ would be truth.

I think did not publicly call out Jimi as a major idol/influence back then, because he did take so much of Jimi's stlyle and incorporate it into his muisc and shows, and he was often being compared to him durng the 80's.

*

In his 1995 AMAs speech he included Jimi Hendrix as one of the artists who contributed to his success:

Prince AOL fan Q&A July 1997:

*

Question: If you had the chance to play with any artist who is no longer with us, whom would you choose?
TheArtist: probably jimi

*

Yes, I know as a young kid/teen he would frequent the movie theaters to watch the 40's/50's films - he wrote about it in th lyrics to his song The Good Life. Yes, he did have many VHS tapes (when they became available) as well, but no doubt he was also watching regular TV too. In his first P&M show at PP he talks about watching TV as a young child to learn the Batman theme and other songs on Piano. In a 1985 or '86 interview he talked about watching the parody of him on SNL after he got the bad press for skipping the We Are The World taping, and he said he thought it was hilarious. He loved comedy, even back then, so no doubt he was watching SNL, stand-up, and the late night talk shows at that time. He was defnitely part of the "TV watching" generation which began in the 1950's and became huge in the 60's and 70's. No VHS tapes in the 60's and 70's, so when going to the theater wasn't an option he would have been watching the TV smile

Here's Prince talking about watching the SNL skit about him in that same 1985 RS article:

*

Does it make you angry when people dig into your background, when they want to know about your sexuality and things like that?

Everyone thinks I have a really mean temper and I don’t like people to do this or do that. I have a sense of humor. I thought that the Saturday Night Live skit with Billy Crystal as me was the funniest thing I ever saw. His imitation of me was hysterical! He was singing, “I am the world, I am the children!” Then Bruce Springsteen came to the mike, and the boys would push him away. It was hilarious. We put it on when we want to laugh. It was great. Of course, that’s not what it is.

Right, but in 1984/85 when this 'questionaire' was there would have been no info that sited Jimi as an influence.

.

I'm just going by the time frame of this and what we would know. And according to the 1985 interview I would not be able to say Jimi.
.
Also I wouldn't say watched TV regularly. It's not possible when you look at that trajectory of time just 1982-1986 alone. When did he have time to regularly watch tv lol

.

Again, I'm not saying he didn't watch any tv but recording, writing, studio time, rehearsing, shooting videos and movies, between Europe, East coast - West coast, touring, proteges etc

People who sit around regularly watching tv don't get ^^ that ^^ done lol But as a fan I would never say TV was a musical inspiration. Movies and real life yes.

People who sit around regularly watching tv don't get ^^ that ^^ done lol But as a fan I would never say TV was a musical inspiration. Movies and real life yes.

I guess my point was that when he did actually sit down to watch some TV it wasn't just the VHS tapes. He would most likely have been catching some network, and later cable, shows too. I don't think he "regularly" watched TV - as in everyday - but I'm sure he caught some shows.

*

Right, TV would not have been an inspiration for his music - he just happened to mention during the PP P&M show that the first songs he learned on Piano were the show theme songs (Batman, Man From U.N.C.L.E., Peanuts theme, etc) which he learned from watching the shows.

*

I think the "Jimi as an influence" thing came from many of the journalists comparing his playing and style to Jimi and knowing that he would have been an influence. Even Jesse Johnson told the story (on Questlove's show I think) of first seeing Prince perform and after the show telling him that he was really influenced by Jimi too - to which Prince replied, "I don't know his music" - and Jesse laughed and said "oh come on! that's bullshit!" - because to him it was obvious that Prince knew his music and was influenced by him.

*

Prince always said through the years that he never watched TV because he didn't have time, but there is so much to contradict that. Jill J, Susannah and Anna G have all confirmed that they spent a lot of time with TV and popcorn. Later, he liked the show New Girl so much that he agreed to do a guest spot. Zoe De Chanel said she was shocked that he even knew about the show and who she was. Associates have talked about watching American Idol with him and they would critique the contestants. Then Prince ended up performing on the show. Another associate told the story of watching SNL with him when Destiny's Child performed for the first time, and Prince said something like, "they've got potential". So, he definitely found time to watch the Tube biggrin
