What you all seem to ignore is that WB had the choice to release a real HD concert. Because, yes, many concerts of Prince and other multimillion selling artists were shot on F.I.L.M. . Go on then, tell us which 1999 gig was filmed on film. . . Ever heard about Live at first avenue 83 ? . . Where do you even get this? Some instances : Live at first avenue 83 was shot on film. 7 march 1982 show at Bloomington. 7 jilune 1986 at Detroit Even some gigs of acts that sold like 500.000 albums were shot on film, from the sixties and on . So with a 1999 album selling 2/3 millions in a few months, this is unbelievable that some shows weren't protected on film. Especially when you know that in 1983 they prepared the movie Purple Rain. . It s like with MJ. Sony could release great HD concerts from All eras, including the Jacksons tour and even the J5! . The problem is that : 1) sometimes they can't locate the tapes 2) they won't pay the price to the owner of the tapes 3) they won't pay the price to remaster it in full HD, because it could cost millions.

I like the way they changed the artwork to silver on the deluxe version, especially since the inner LP cover is still purple.

Yep it's called marketing and quite a smart thing to do. Having quotes from members of the Prince band would be interesting to us but the general public couldn't care less. There is a chance, small small chance, but a chance nonetheless that a fan of Guns N Roses might pick this set up because this guy is quoted. PLUS it is giving Prince kudos from supposedly unexpected folks and saying "Prince was the musicians musician" etc 'I loved him then, I love him now and will love him eternally. He's with our son now.' Mayte 21st April 2016 = the saddest quote I have ever read! RIP Prince and thanks for everything.

Sorry, I didn't have a chance to get it remasterized. RIP

Also on this whole video vs film etc debate. Jeez guys I wish everyone would cool their jets. It is actually pretty simple. Some concerts were shot on film (either 35mm or 16mm - each of which will look different). During the 80s it was common to shoot higher budget pop "videos" on 16mm film and big budget on 35mm film (because it cost a lot more). Cheap videos were shot on, well video! And here is the crunch. When shooting on video PROFESSIONALLY they used professional video formats. Older formats include U-Matic then BetaCam. Only domestic / home viewing formats used VHS (or early 80s the far superior Betamax - that evolved into Betacam). So if a concert was shot for broadcast on TV they would probably have shot on Betacam or U-Matic. They MIGHT have shot some on film but that was more expense. Whatever format something was shot on, if it was intended for home viewing/release in the 80s then it would have to be transferred to video (if shot on film) to make master copies for mass production. Whether something was edited on film or video probably depended on budget and end goal (release format - so if cinema then edited on film and master version on film). Perhaps SOME of the confusion for SOME folks (not all, many here are very well informed) is that Prince ALSO shot all of his concerts so he could watch the them back and check out the performance. Prince would not have professionally shot these. He would simply have had the crew set up video cameras (recording on VHS - like any home video camera). Even in the 00s I could see this set up at the mixing desk (single camera straight on to the stage). For the estate and WB (or whoever in future) to release DVDs/Blue Ray (whatever) of concert footage ALL they can do is go back to the format the concert was shot on (assuming that footage still exists/can be located). Failing that they will go to the next format that they can locate. And then here is the next crunch - film and video stock deteriorates over time. It needs to be kept in special environmental conditions. We know there were problems with the Vault at PP so EVEN IF a concert had been shot on film it might not be useable anymore. That would force them to use the best version available. Seriously, it ain't that hard a concept. 'I loved him then, I love him now and will love him eternally. He's with our son now.' Mayte 21st April 2016 = the saddest quote I have ever read! RIP Prince and thanks for everything.

I did not know Duff McKagan was a Prince connoisseur,
I have read 2 books authored by him, do not remember him writing on Prince, I did enjoy his writing. And I am NOT a guns and Rose fan. I’d rather have Duff than Quest, yes. Does it ‘help’ if I buy from Prince official site as opposed to Amazon, the price is currently the same. Perhaps the biography book release will help market 1999 release this Fall. Why is there no alternative version (not released before) of 1999 on the deluxe sets? I mean: a mono edit. Please explain the historical significance of this version to faNs if you can.
On the 1999 live version of the Summit: you can see that Prince was quite in happy mood. Backgrounds always welcome.
Also: I looked at google maps for the Summiit: Closed, etc. But could it really hold 10.000 people (as mentioned on princevaul for the show date)? I mean: for 10.000 in Rotterdam you need the Rotterdam Ahoy. a building of different proportions. Pills and thrills and daffodils will kill... If you don't believe me or don't get it, I don't have time to try to convince you, sorry.

((found this)) Duff McKagan has continually expressed his unabashed love for Prince and his music. Saying things such as: “I have been a die-hard Prince fan since the early ’80s. When Controversy came out in 1981, a punker friend of mine in Seattle demanded that I listen to it. Prince was unlike anyone else. When 1999 came out in 1982, the record transformed my insides.” Duff even credits Prince for inspiring him to follow his dreams of becoming a rock star. “When Purple Rain hit, I was free and starting to take life by the balls. That record was the soundtrack to my life and gave me the confidence to move to L.A. at 19, with nothing more than belief in myself. Prince’s music can do that.”

I am super-psyched for this special edition... I've already pre-ordered it. But I just now saw the packaging: , . Look at that! A box with a slip-cover... different photos on the CD and DVD sleeves... the graphics... Man, that's an impressive deluxe set. I can't wait to get my hands on it. . But... I hate to sound like an unappreciative fan, but... couldn't they have done something like this for "Purple Rain"? "1999" is a great and important album, to be sure, but... I mean, c'mon: "PURPLE RAIN"! There wasn't more they could have done vault-wise and packaging-wise? If it was because they needed more time to go through the Vault material, then I could have waited another year or two. Again, I don't mean to whine... just pondering the whys and hows. . All I know is: they better do something this impressive for "Sign 'O' The Times"!!!

1999 is probably my fav P album, but no way im buying this mess. Im even very turned off by this uncoherent and uncomplete 'collection'. But hard to win me over in the first place, as i very dislike 'remasters'. Dont mess with originals, but that was discussed already before...

Stop it, you're making my eyes hurt from rolling so hard.
I placed my order for the Super Deluxe vinyl edition with my record store today. £184.00. Ah well. We live once.
I'm very excited for this.
To the earlier comment about why they didn't do something this comprehensive for Purple Rain - I'll be the Estate/Warners now wish they had!
Purple Rain was really their first foray into this with Prince's work. And what with vinyl now being 'a thing' again, it seems logical to release everything on vinyl - it didn't seem that logical to do that even as recently as 2017.... I wish they had released everything - and more - on vinyl!
But then there's always the 40th Anniversay Super Deluxe Edition to look forward to!

As a fan of both Prince and Guns 'N Roses, Duff's love for Prince has been common knowledge. I'm actually happy that he is penning some liner notes for the reissue. It'll be cool for non-GNR fans to see his appreciation.
Plus, he did a kickass cover of "Bambi", which isn't to be found anywhere on YouTube.

Why is it this place is always ‘I know more than you’ or ‘Duh common knowledge’ ‘I was the one he REALLY loved’ (lol)

I guess I should have specified that in Guns 'N Roses "fandom" it is common knowledge.
