Prince on Orange Is The New Black

"The Thirteenth", S07E10, 52 minute mark.

People sitting at lunch, one girl is high. She says that the drug she is on (fenty) is better than "your mom's shit. You should call it that, Not Your Mom's Shit."

Another girl says, "Isn't fentanyl what killed Prince?"

Another girl: "Mmm. Call it Purple Rain."

These quips are bound to happen, so I'm not overthinking it. This season has been very heavy on the social commentary. Gender identity, immigration and deportation, denial, #MeToo, and more.

PS there is some great music this season, too.

Is that supposed to be entertaining or funny, I don't get it? If that what they were going for, I find nothing entertaining or amusing about how Prince died, and think it's in very bad taste.

It's supposed to be characters talking in a show. It's supposed to be conversation. That's how people talk. Some people anyway.

It's an observation by characters in a TV show. Of course it sounds odd out of context.

But in the show I bet it has a reason for being there.

There is no such thing as bad taste - only what is bad taste TO YOU.

Agreed on all counts. OITNB doesn't go for a punch line, or a zinger. These are complex women who have a wide variety of experiences and backgrounds, whose common denominator is being in prison. This is how folks talk, whether others realize it or not. Someone somewhere is making a Prince joke, whether about something purple, his heels, or his death. I mean, how many jokes have been made about Mama Cass choking on a ham sandwich, which actually isn't true? Or Janis Joplin sniffing model airplane glue? Or every other British joke about a rock star "laying in a pool of their own sick?"

Taste is relative, whether in humor, drama, music, whatever. As I noted early on, don't overthink it. You have to take things for what they are in the moment, and not glom it into something bigger. The show is 100% more than one Prince reference. Besides, who's joking about Fentanyl overdoses?? Ever?

I'd say the first character is more observant, the second also heard the news but only can relate Prince to Purple Rain. Like most people on Earth. It's every day talk. Normal.

I thought it was a stupid attempt at glib dialogue. I'm just not a fan of snarky smart ass references.

Would it have been just as acceptable if she said "Mmm, call it I Would Die 4 U"?

Just curious.

Maybe it's just me, maybe I just don't get what some today may think of as just "dark humor" or "just normal talk"....but I don't think making a sarcastic joke of how someone died tragically by drugs is something to take lightly or joke about, imo it's just not right! Maybe it's just me, and maybe I just don't understand or get today's generation, that seems to lack compassion and feelings for their fellow man, but I do. I don't care if it's entertainment or some that think that maybe I just need to lighten up, that it's just a show, Prince was a real person who died tragically by accidently taking a drug that took his life, and I find nothing about that funny, at all!

I think you summed it up well Looby. The shit just really wasn't that funny and the situation with Prince was absolutely tragic.
