Finally the estate has done something right! Trying to disassociate this horrible video with a masterclass song such as this was a fantastic idea! smile

I do appreciate the creativity and animation but the video and song don't mesh well together.

This format would of been perfect with Make Up.

If they continue doing cartoon version of him in music videos, just change up the looks and less 1999 & PR era

It's the same way you can't share music. You don't own it. You can share it from the official Prince FB page, but to just upload it, nope. Keyword: monetization.

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

That's really strange, I shared it from the official video that was on youtube.

Anyway I love it, it's catchy, and I love the video, I think it's pretty cool.

At last !
At last a right move for promotion!
Since Prince s passing I m adamant here that animated music videos are the most obvious way to promote unreleased material ( besides an actual music video of course).
.
In fact, I m also saying that on MJ boards for ten years. The most obvious way to make cool and fun things.
I was also hoping that for the Invincible promotion. After all, Madonna, Mariah Carey Toni Braxton, etc. Did this at the time.
.
Now the sound is synchronized with the video ! Wow! What a huge improvement from the low-fi rehearsals, where you can't even see Prince s face ! Now you can see Prince in one of his music video...
.
Some are complaining that Holly Rock wasn't the best choice...I m sorry, this is not great material, but there isn't great material either on Originals. So it s fine with me.
.
Next time, a slightly higher budget for the animation, and they could sell 1999 deluxe with a bunches of new music videos !

I was expecting a tacky monstrosity when I saw the announcement on Twitter, but I do like the video TBH, it's cute.

It would've been a nice touch if it was possible for the female character to resemble Sheila E., but as someone further up the thread said, who knows whether she'd have agreed to her likeness being used anyway...

I like the video, I think it’s fun. The raspberry beret cartoon favored him even less and he had some control over that, so the likeness doesn’t really bother me too much. My daughter loves the video and continued singing Rock rock holly rock when it was over, so I think it was a success.

Same with my 11 year old nephew, he was mesmerised and singing it in the car all the way to his grandmothers.

That’s awesome!

I hear ya, but that was not Sheila E singing that part, it was Prince. For continuity's sake, I am glad they did it this way as this track doesn't have sheila on it at all. It would be like having the girls in the bangles in the manic monday video singing the backup vocals, just wouldn't make sense.

Good, they are getting the young folks interested with this cartoon stuff, they will be releasing Prince stuff hundreds of years after we are all gone, so smart to go after the younger crowd.

For all those clutching their pearls...

First, this animation collaboration is most definitely in the spirit of Prince’s wishes. Have we forgotten during his later years Prince himself reached out to up and coming visual artists and photographers for collaborations via the internet? His cartoon avatars, all-over t-shirt designs, torn photo collages, and “love sexy that’s my jam” YouTube endeavors all come to mind. He clearly saw himself as a platform for supporting other emerging artists. The execution and results were mixed IMO but no denying this is something that aligns with his wishes.

Next, if you’re paying attention to what’s going on in youth art world, this video’s art direction is very much relevant. It’s a mix of anime and synthwave visual styles while also serving as a lyric video. We all know Prince had a thing for comic books. Bonus points for throwing in an homage to the right-to-left panning from “Eye Wish U Heaven.” Intentional or not, seems a wink to this forum’s predictable response.

Finally, let’s not pretend following the Warner years Prince was precious about art quality. Don’t get me started on NPG Music club cover art illustrations. Those scribbles were official and just... ugh.

Summing it up: Video gets an “A” for concepts, relevance, and reverence. I just wish the execution was more like this synthwave video’s quality: https://m.youtube.com/wat...ev0wz87hVw

It’s cool and fits the release of a demo in spirit. The demo is a look back in a nostalgic way, and so is this music video. I wonder if these were the same peeps that did the animated bit in HBO’s “Euphoria” with the slash fiction animation of “One Direction”.

Nice commentary and valid points. I guess I have always preferred the “real” over the “animated” in video/TV/film, which is why it does not appeal to me as much as it does others. I do agree it is a good way to attract the younger audience which is important.

Very important, because they know they wont be able to get a 16th of the vault music out before we all leave this earth, so makes sense they are scrambing to hook a younger generation. Someone's gotta be buying all this stuff up when we are gone. This strategy will likely be in place well through the year 2600.

I believe they already have a plan in place to premier Under The Cherry moon to all the boys and girls born on the 1st moon colony. And Mars will be on high rotation on the red planet. Venus De Milo for the Venus colonies, and The Sun The Moon and Stars (galactic edition), for those space faring families working, travelling, or residing in space.

Oh and Way Back Home, Purple Pebbles for all the kids that love sugar and purple. Press Prince's face on the box, Purple Rain starts playing, right on the OLED carton, in super high def 64k.

Regarding the “Purple Pebbles” - I don’t see them going after the K through 6 age group biggrin The animation fits the Teen + set which may help to carry his Vault music to the future generations. Then again, they’ve already sold out to Capitol One, so anything is possible.
*
Although, I also think that future generations can and will find and like his existing music which will carry over to his Vault music.

Sweet little video for an absolutely awful song.

Why! Why! Why was this the chosen track?

It’s not even on the album but I think VAN GOGH could have been a really cool release. It’s quirky and interesting.

Yes, I remember that as well. Prince would chant the chorus of the song in the middle of Mutiny (I think) in ‘86, but the song never took off and was not a popular song. If Krush Groove had been a more successful film it may have been a bigger hit.
