Universal Pictures is fast tracking a movie featuring Prince’s music catalog.

I’m sure folks will be getting their knickers in a twist over this and saying what Prince would and wouldn’t have wanted but I’ll be going to see it and if it raises demand for his music and makes more vault releases more viable then bring it on.

https://www.showbiz411.co...ll-soaring

First it was “Bohemian Rhapsody.” Then came “Rocketman.”

This past weekend, the Universal movie “Yesterday” posted $17 million at the box office with 17 Beatles songs included.

Now I’m told Universal Pictures is fast tracking a movie featuring Prince’s music catalog. I’m told that Universal chief DOnna Langley is “obsessed” with this project.

It was announced last December that Universal had secured the rights to Prince’s songs not necessarily for a biopic but as “signposts” in a narrative story. Maybe one in which no one remembers Prince but a kid from Minneapolis starts playing them after an electrical storm.

Since “Purple Rain” is already taken for the famous Prince movie, and “Little Red Corvette” is overused, my proposal is a movie called “Nothing Compares 2 U.” Or even one titled “Raspberry Beret.”

But that December story has now made Universal execs eager to get the movie going as soon as they find the right project.

So who’s next? David Bowie probably. And the Rolling Stones. My guess is Mick Jagger’s Jagged Films is trying to figure out a way to get their own movie going with the Stones catalog. Meantime, “Girl from the North Country,” a Bob Dylan musical from off Broadway, is heading uptown next year, and certainly to a movie adaptation.

All of this I guess leads back to the two “Mamma Mia” movies that used ABBA songs. And then there will be a movie adaptation of Carole King’s “Beautiful” Broadway musical, using all of her songs.

I hope they do something like this. Yesterday wasn't the first movie to do this w/ The Beatles, either. Let's not forget Across The Universe, plus things like Moulin Rouge. I think a story about a rock star using Prince's music would so fun and interesting. Rocketman is a fictionalized fantasy about Elton, not a proper bio pic. And Yesterday, like Across the Universe and Moulin Rouge, use the songs to push the narrative. It's a great idea. Outside of the popular stuff, Prince has such a deep catalog with great stories in them, that they become highly adaptable to things like this.

Of course, there will be fans who don't like anything, ever, at all, and will poo poo it. But, it's a huge cash influx to the estate just in licensing, plus subsequent album sales (because there's sure to be a soundtrack release), and new or renewed interest in Prince's music.

Shit, anything that keeps people talking about Prince and possibly speeds up the process of getting his vault material out into the world is fine by me.

I agree....let the younger ones learn of his music through a movie.

Exactly.

My 11 year old nephew hasn’t stopped singing and seeking out Queen stuff since he saw Bohemian Rhapsody. Sings the whole Rhapsody in the shower.

This could be cool or it could be cringeworthy. All depends on who’s involved and if they’re interested in doing something good or just making a quick buck.

As others has mentioned, if it introduces Prince's music to younger generations, great! I doubt thought that they'll be using "Head" in this film.

My prediction: in 50 years people will still be discussing Purple Rain and won't be talking about this. But whatever, maybe it'll be good.

There's a movie coming out centered around Bruce Springsteen songs. I think it would be cool to do something similar, like show a fans perspective.

Yeah, these are just jukebox movies, which are meant to be fun. I fully expect half of the Org to lower their panties (once they're firmly in a twist against their balloon knot) and shit on it.

You're right, but think of it this way: how many of those people will be OG Prince fans? And how many of them will be folks who were turned onto Prince's music because of these modern attempts at keeping his spirit alive?

Some fans probably consider the Batman soundtrack to be among Prince's lesser albums, just a cheesy cash-grab at the end of arguably his best decade of work. If my dad wouldn't have played that soundtrack for me as a young kid, I might not be here typing this right now. Not everything Prince related that comes out now is going to cater to all of us Prince nerds. If there's a chance that it plants the seeds that help to turn younger folks into super-fans, though, then it's worthwhile.

True story. I know lots of fans for whom Batman was the gateway drug.

Girl 6?

And it seems like comic nerds fully conscious in '89 go absolute bananas for that Batman Soundtrack. I've heard both Kevin Smith and Howard Stern on their respective shows sound shot out of a cannon heralding it as among Prince's all-time masterworks, effortlessly reciting the lyrics and track order like the back of their hands, their ancillary staff looking at them wtf did this come from. One man's "phoned-in" is another man's life changer.

Girl 6 wasn't a jukebox film; it wasn't a musical. Just had a lot of music in it. There were no musical numbers, or characters singing, etc. The music didn't even really push the narrative necessarily (even Prince told Spike some of it work, some of it didn't).

To purposely build a story around some Prince songs, likely about a boy and girl in love, tempted by evil, but hounded by good, etc would be a fun romp.

Considering how torturous it was to sit through Graffiti Bridge (I couldn’t even pay attention the whole way through), I’m gonna pass on that. I’ll watch the music videos but that’s it

I think that will be fabulous! And the true fans of Prince would like to hear more of his plethora of songs. In addition, the non-Prince fans can listen/attain some Prince-Music-knowledge.

You can probably split it down the middle on folks like like or dislike Grafitti Bridge. For me, I loved it, Lotusflower movie was over an hour long, I would love to see what that is all about one day.
