I like it, too and the whole album. I hadn't looked up the vocals and you got me to go there\Thanks. Another puzzle. Amazing singing, interweaving front and background vocals, one comes forward on the verse and goes back on the chorus, and Prince singing it all. Isn't the second disc dedicated to his relationship with Mayte? The song seems very dream-like - a dream about her? "... I'm turning the boy 2 vapor/ Now, I wanna do the same 2 U/ If U don't tattoo my name upon your train"... Also, who is Shiva???? -->On princevault I saw in the 'thanks' credits: "Thanks, Shiva" - Emale

There is a strong TLC vibe on this song. The bass line, that high octave synth, the little spoken bits leading to the chorus, the production itself. I can hear T-Boz singing the verses and Chili handling the chorus. It almost sounds like something you'd have heard on CrazySexyCool. Yet the idea of email was more prominent in 1999, and technology at the forefront on Fanmail. Some of the sounds on it would be heard again on NewPowerSoul in 1998, and through some of his NPGMC era music. Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

Okay now... Yes, I'm aware of the Hindu goddess... But, why "Thanks, Shiva" and then, "- Emale". I suppose that's the thing about credits. They can be cryptic and just meant for the person who knows.

Going off topic here: Looking at the preceding song on the album, Soul Sanctuary: I went down the rabbit hole and came up with this video... I didn't know who Sandra St. Victor is or that she wrote the lyrics to Soul Sanctuary. She is speaking about working with Prince and also pays tribute to him, April 25, 2016: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TrBYCqmQerw

Soul Sanctuary is my favorite song from this album. It's one of the most beautiful songs Prince ever did. Spike Lee said that he drove his wife crazy when he got the cd and put this song on repeat, listening to it over and over.

Sound is ok, not a fave. But the lyrics are interesting. "A strong spirit transcends rules." - Prince

Liking your work. I love those little references he'd do.

It's ok. There's worse on Emancipation, there's also much better. RIP

Soul Sanctuary is about thinking of and missing an ex-lover. Emale is about contacting a woman - most likely an ex - who is involved with someone else via email to arrange a sexual rendezvous. He’s jealous of her relationship with the other guy: * “He couldn't wait to tell her until after he got the Nella Her love would only even the score It seemed her darling fella He stole a hella lot of bucks from the corner store The declaration of war that followed She never believed, oh In the darkest corners where widows mourn That's where he whispered her name He said, "We can do it here, my dear But I fear your tears will fall like rain" (They fall like) "Because I must tell you (Tell you) While I'm deep in your smell You got the man I want to inflict with pain I'm running a game with my paper I'm turning the boy to vapor Now I wanna do the same to you If you don't tattoo my name upon your train" [Edited 6/20/19 2:35am]

He was leaving little “bread crumb” clues to connect the dots on this one.

Yes, Soul Sanctuary is a gorgeous song. Prince did a beautiful job with the music for the track. He also did Stone and Van Gogh - both great songs done with her lyrics. He was recording many “I miss you and still love you” type songs through ‘95. The earlier configuration of Emancipation was more of a heartbreak theme. The marriage/baby songs were added much later - early ‘96. [Edited 6/20/19 6:47am]

On her album "Peace Beyond Passion", which was released a a week or so before the recording of the basic tracks and bass line for "Emale" (which was really just a jam session), there is a song called "God Shiva", co-written by Wendy. It's a direct reference to that.

Love that Wendy co-wrote and played guitar on the track. I hear a slight influence on Emale, but God Shiva is a much better song. Prince was using that shrill sounding keyboard sound then and it’s all through the song which is annoying. Lyrics are interesting though
