At the end of the day, Prince is gone. He’s not coming back. The estate, whether anyone wants to accept it or not, despite being in the disarray it’s in, will continue as a business. As interesting as it is to speculate on what could be done as Genesia said, it’s all “pissing in the wind”. I believe it was rdhull who said, many years ago before Prince died, “ You are NOT shareholders! You are fans”. If you had NO control or input while the man was living, what makes anyone think that they have a say now? I admit that the discussion about the preservation of his art and legacy is entertaining. It’s even more entertaining seeing users here who shitted on the majority of his work post 1988 coming out of the woodworks in full armor ready to protect his name and art now that he’s no longer here... but that’s another post. But Prince’s legacy is what it is. He did what he was put on this earth to do. It won’t be forgotten.
Whatever is released from this point on, you may buy it or you won’t. But your ears will always be open for it. There are several artists who were dead for decades before their unreleased material surfaced. It’s baffling that after only 3 years there are expectations of the floodgates being opened. It kinda helps to be grateful for what you have and be grateful for what you might get. [Edited 6/12/19 12:23pm]

All they need is a fulfillment center. Supply the available content to them; let the center make copies of whatever is ordered and ship it; and split the revenue. Absolutely no effort needed by the Estate other than to either make copies of all content (which admittedly could be a lot but hopefully has already been done), or grant custody of the performances to the fulfillment center, with lots of protective covenents.
In fact -
Dear Mr. Howe:
I can provide and operate the fulfillment center. Orgnote me if you're interested.

. It is a crazy and unbelievably naive idea. The Estate will never publish an inventory of their assets for many reasons, but certainly not in order to hold a garage sale for fans. This is not how the music industry works. .
A project even just remotely similar to this naive idea would require a budget, proper planning and lot of preparation, and would require decisions by both Comerica and the heirs – and most importantly, as I have stressed this several times already, a long-term concept and plan which they still don't have. I am honestly amazed sometimes at some people's naivity here about these things, so I need to repeat: everything needs a budget, every single move involve costs, even if you just want to order Iron Mountain to pull a tape off the shelf for you they will bill you for it, and if you decide to put that material on the market it will involve engineering costs too, even if you don't want to "remaster" or edit it, someone needs to prepare the master files for distribution. And yes, of course I'd LOVE to hear everything too and I know relasing anything CAN bring in money for the Estate but these things need planning, budgeting and need to be properly executed. And it will never happen at that scale that RodeoSchro suggested and there's absolutely no need to entertain M. Howe wich such foolish ideas. I bet he's laughing his behind off at some of the suggestions here... . |

I totally agree with you. At this point I'm expecting about 1 or 2 releases per year. A very slow drip of "commercially viable" works. |

First of all, money won't be a problem. I can get this funded in about one day. We're also a pretty big Iron Mountain customer here in Houston, in case that's worth anything.
The first time I posted it, I did kind of think, "RodeoSchro, this is another one of your pie in the sky ideas". But hear me out:
IF, and I mean IF, Prince did indeed have hundreds or thousands of recorded shows, then two things are true:
1. There really is no way for the Estate to market individual shows, as getting unreleased new music does and should take precedence; and
2. If the Estate did decide to release some shows, there is no doubt the responses would be "Why did you release THAT show? Why didn't you release THIS show? I want the shows you didn't release!!!!" The only exception would be Small Club - but it's a soundboard show and the Estate knows the target audience for that show already has it in pristine quality.
There's little doubt that we fans would buy certain shows. Lots of them. What I'd buy is not the same as what you or Donny or Bart would buy. Therefore, in order to maximize sales, all shows would need to be available.
Now, the good news is that nothing needs to be done to any of these performances. No overdubs; no re-mastering; no post-shoot editing. Just market them as-is. My guess is that all the audience shows are soundboard recordings, and all the videos were grabbed from the venue's in-house video system. They should be fine.
So - all you need is a marketing arm, and a fulfillment center. Marketing is simple.
The fulfillment portion is simple, too. I can hire people who will make an audio, CD or data file copy of anything - and will charge on a per-item basis. All we need is acess to the content - all protected by ironclad confidentiality agreements and financial indemnification.
I already do this with photographs. My fulfillment center charges us 15% of each order, so maybe that's what I'd charge the Estate if I operated the fulfillment center. We'd have to see; I list my photo costs only as a general example of how it works.
The Estate has nothing to lose, and lots to gain. They monetize some assets that probably wouldn't be monetized much if at all. There is no work involved on their end. I just send them found money each month.
Dear Mr. Howe:
This will work, and will provide the Estate with a revenue stream that it likely would not create on its own. Orgnote me if interested.

What the duck.. I hope Mr Howe doesn’t read this or he’ll release The Eggplant Experience
But what if it worked? What if you could buy a copy of any Prince concert? Would you?
Unsure if this is serious or sarcasm.. Just to clarify I am not Mikey Howe |

New music and the various unreleased 'time capsule' albums Prince had already prepared.
Hardcore fans are also interested in the post-80s music and the last albums and songs Prince recorded, so for this audience, start with the final recordings and work backwards.
The hardcore fanbase is really the only market for all the later unreleased material and the Estates only means of monetising it. This specific audience needs to be catered for differently than the casual commercial market, but can be charged premium or subscriber prices.
Whatever is released, release it as is. |

The only way is streaming or a 30-CD-unreleased-songs-box. There are 256 unreleased songs in my outtakes-playlist, when will a song like "Stone" be released? On Emancipation deluxe?
Same for other projects like "Originals", why not a multi-CD-release? In 2027 only diehard fans will buy "Originals 9" including
Another Boy
In The Socket
Pop My Clutch
2gether
Superhero
The Big Pump
Playgirl
Elephant Box
Go Go Dancer
and the smash The Most Beautiful Boy In The World

RodeoSchro said: This is not a crazy idea. Why not make money off of the thousands of concerts. Maybe a streaming subscription service for this.
I bet he's laughing his behind off at some of the suggestions here... .
What is crazy to me is that out of everything that could have been released, the first release was a previously circulating short demo tape of Prince on the Piano. I think that it is crazy that the idea of the Originals release was not determined until after NC2U was released last spring. The NPG Music club was crazy when Prince first did it but it ended up being a success. I don't agree that the consumer has no influence over what is released. I agree that everything needs a budget and the primary factor in determining the budget is ascertaining the demand. We are the demand. If they release crap that we don't want we won't buy it. |

Honestly, if you've read our discussions on the Originals thread, the heart of the matter is not what we want but how we want it.
What difference does it make? It's all just variations on "Gimme!"
I'm sorry you see it that way. |
