When I first read Emma's comment about the drums I was going to similarly reply that the percussion is great...

But upon listening to them both back-to-back, I too perfer Prince's version without the percussion. It's less busy. The music has room to breath.

In fact, I get the impression that Prince had Sheila add the percussion not because the song needed it, but simply to help her make the song her own. And maybe to give her cred as an actual musician who makes a real contribution to the music (not another pretty face like Apolonia and Vanity).

I love Sheila and I generally love her percussion, but this specific song is better off without it. A lone drum solo in the middle would have been fine, but the constantly rattling of percussion on top of the melody was too much.

Also, I like in Prince's version that after the line "if-you-have-to-ask-it-costs-too-much lingerie" his backing vocal repeats "lingerie". It's a small touch, but it's nice. It's in the Sheila version as well, but it's burried so deep in the mix you can barely hear it.

Holly Rock is the weak link in this compilation. I have never liked Sheila's version or Prince's. I would have took that off and replaced it with Eternity which he gave 2 Sheena - beautiful song.
