Sit down. First, you contradicted yourself. Second, you can't speak for "people" other than yourself and only yourself.

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

I think it is his sexual expression in the 80s that did it.

For some reason I think people equate hypersexual expression with curse words lol

Shhhhiiiiiittt baby, dammn

Mary sweeeet mother of Jesus!!

lol funny I think people call on God as much as they curse during sex

Slight incorrect.

He spells "P-U-S-S-Y" in "New Postition".

Cat or someone says "fuck me pumps" at the beginning of "2 Nigs". Also the word "shit" is in that dialog.

At the end of "Rock Hard" he says, "What the fuck kind of ending was that?"

bboooooiiiieeeey you know I know about the P U S S Y lol

I didn't include it. I mean they didn't SAY it like 'Pussy control'

but I also question and don't see pussy or dick as 'curse' words

cunt maybe but not pussy

ass shit damn fuck

.

Yeah the Black album stuff. RockHard you have to listen intently to hear it. Almost like sitting in your seat until the credits of a movie end to make sure there is no preview to the next movie lol

Not that I give a shit, but some people here have a loose definition of a curse word. "Pussy" isn't vulgar? I suppose depending on your profession, maybe it isn't, but for most of society, the word pussy is most definitely profane unless you are specifically talking about cats. And even then, people roll their eyes razz. Same w/ the word bitch. Go ahead, walk up to your favorite priest and call him a bitch. See if it ain't profane.

Well you do give a shit.

.

It depends. Why does Pussy/Dick have to be vulgar? They are what most adults say when it comes to sexual expression. Sex isn't vulgar.
.

I don't know what society you live in, but today Bitch is not seen the same as FUCK. Women call each other bitch as a term of endearment etc it's not the same
.
But the question is, do people see Pussy as a 'curse' word? I don't think so.

.

Well you are bringing in a religious aspect. Talking about sex could be seen as profane to some.

.

You have to remove any religious aspects. And look at it from a 'societal' perspective.
I don't have a priest or a favorite priest. But the priest example is not such a good example.
.
Growing up I would not say any of those words around my parents. Even though sometimes they said some in our presence. Damn, shit, ass. Pussy and Dick would be adult sexual expressions and they would not use those words with us. When we became adult Damn Shit Ass, most of the time in a humorous way. My mother never said Shite or Ass, she would say Sugar Honey Iced Tea or Anal Social Studies lol

He cursed quite a bit when playing his songs live though. In ‘87 when singing Strange Relationship he often sang “I bet you wish this was a mother-fuckin’ movie, then you could rewrite my every line...”. At the ‘87 Paris after show (one of my favs) during Mutiny he sings “baby when you talked to me you didn’t have a mother fuckin’ thing to say”. Lots of cursing at live shows during the 90’s. At the ‘93 after show at the Starlight Lounge (which I think was mostly a white audience) Prince says to the crowd, “we ain’t scared of you motherfuckers”.
*
I loved it in his younger days. Strict religion or not, it’s understandable why he would stop using the harsher words as an older man.

How about some of you go through 1990-1999 and go album by album/song by song and decipher the ones that have curse words and the ones that don't.

Don't wait for me to do it so you can find fault with it lol

What he might say in an interview/concert/show/in the studio is not something Tipper could put a sticker on

Come on now. You are HEAVILY using your own rationalizing for some of this. Of course he says it "Ain't fucking just for kicks." smile It counts.

-

Also, Pussy is usually a curse word...why else call it P. Control? Do you let your 5 year old say it? Can you say it in church? In front of you grandparents? Those are general societal measuring sticks and Prince breaks MOST of these on the bulk of his albums.

-

You are really splitting hairs and stretching truths. Fact is, Prince swore A LOT in his music. Especially in context of when/what else was going on in pop music. Less after 2001ish. Yet, by your logic when he says "what the duck" we should count it, because we all know what he really means.

-

As Chris Rock commented about Prince's explicit lyrics, Prince was saying everything before everyone else said anything.

Strive

I guess in a similar manner you can make the claim that Prince didn't actually make alot of religious songs because, even though there's religious elements sprinkled all over his work, there's only a handful of songs that explicitly center around God.

Compared to other artists that do entire gospel albums, that's nothing. lol

PliablyPurple

Probably half of P's audience has some sort of religious bend, so yeah, it's a fair point to make. But, yeah, make it a random stranger, no knowledge of their background...call 'em a bitch. Don't smile, don't juggle, don't give 'em a thumbs up, or tap dance. Be as calm as one would be when talking about the weather. Make sure to upload it to youtube (you know, for the lols).

And gimme a freakin' break, women using the word bitch amongst friends as a term of endearment is not the same as a man calling a woman he doesn't know a bitch, which is exactly what you are saying when you say that's the "society" we live in now. One that can handle such casual use of the word "bitch". Test that one, too, in this tolerant society you have special keys to. Go ahead and upload that one to youtube, too. Again, for the lols.

I'm the opposite, I hear more curses than were actually there, like I thought it was "I ain't fuckin' with this bitch" and for years I thought he said the n-word right before "green eggs and ham" in Housequake.

Honestly, though I was raised on gangsta rap since the car-seat, something about Prince's manic intensity with say, his sincerely "fuck the taste out your mouth" line in Let's Pretend We're Married to me was wayyy more explicit than the entirety of The Chronic album sans the porno skit. To me, growing up.

And really, rappers are the only means of comparison to argue he "didn't actually swear a lot." Because, as already mentioned, compared to his 80s peers and historical musical predecessors, the guy cursed like a sailor.

Yeah, I'm not saying Prince never swore in his records or that he swore very little and just used acceptable words/ play on words to get sexual lyrics across.

People would think because he was weird and singing about sex and sensuality, he would resort to swearing a lot, which broke censorship barriers in the 1980s. In fact the (almost no swearing) lyrics in "Darling Nikki" was the reason why there are Censorship Stickers on music today.

But considering all that, Prince didn't swear too much, now I think of it. Only in some albums starting in the late 1980s to mid 1990s, he would say a curse worse or 12, but I guess he was trying to remain relevant then, which is unusual from an artist who didn't care about "being on top".

Obviously from the early 2000s, there was no swearing, the exception being a slight hint to the S word in "Lolita" from the 3121 album.

Darling Nikki was censored because of the lyrical content/descriptive nature of the masturbation scene.
*
Keep in mind too - if Prince had been adding curse words to his big songs they would not have been played on radio stations, or they would have been “bleeped” out which affects the flow of the song.

In the ealy to mid '90s, during the heyday of the NPG, I think he full-on embraced the cursing persona... LOL. This is also coincidentally my favorite P era, as evidenced by my username.

.

I always considered the uptick in his cursing in the '90s another example of him trying to jump on the hip-hop bandwagon.

Never registers

That is something about a lot of the that people are pointing out, you cannot really tell

that falsetto, heavily masks what he could be saying

[Edited 6/4/19 19:47pm]

Actually I'm not, until you said that I forgot all about it, hence 'doesn't register' I mean it's not like Erotic City and it depends on how often I hear a song or who I'm listening to it.

.

I hear this song played at weddings, I doubt most of the people hearing it hear 'FUCKING JUST FOR KICKS' they way the words are rolling off his tongue in that falsetto. If he sang it in a normal register, it would be. But in general his falsetto takes on a different vibration.
.
Another thing, the whole controversy of did he say fuck or funk from Erotic City I think has forever messed with people when we hear that word. We Can Fuck/We Can Funk, you listen more intently to see what he's saying.

.

Fact is I'm proving he DID NOT swear a lot. How can you say it is a FACT, when I just went through 1978-1979 NONE AT ALL, 1980-1989 15% of the songs have A curse word. How is that A LOT? And you and no one else has gone through(waiting for me to do it?) the 1990s or the 2000s where we overall know that the 2000s there is NO CURSE WORDS. He cursed on songs, but to say he did it 'a lot' when a whole decade curse words are absent.

.

Did he use any curse words from 2001-2015??

.

I'm the one saying he didn't curse often, so why would it by MY logic to count 'what the duck' when I don't even consider pussy or dick a curse word? that doesn't follow any logic.

.

And Chris Rock is a slack mouth. People like him think Prince and all he hears is SEX and CURSING. And that isn't reasonable thinking nor is it honest critiquing of Prince's work.

.

I think a lot of people are mixing in what he might have side in concert

I guess in a similar manner you can make the claim that Prince didn't actually make alot of religious songs because, even though there's religious elements sprinkled all over his work, there's only a handful of songs that explicitly center around God.

Compared to other artists that do entire gospel albums, that's nothing. lol

I agree, I've said that before.

People think all of his music was about the conflict of Sex & God. And it wasn't

They site him using the Our Father quote in Controversy as conflict. Yet it isn't

There are whole albums that don't even bring up any direct or obvious religious tone.

[Edited 6/5/19 2:06am]

One of the reasons why I was drawn to Prince was because I registered him as a fellow deviant.
So I too, heard more things than he was actually saying

.

I have a fellow Prince fan friend, who tried to insist that at the end of When 2 R in Love, that Prince said something about "being in bed with the devil" or something. That part where he whispers something really low. And until I really straightened him out on that after first talking, he believed (he wanted to believe) that Prince said that. Because he and many other want Prince to be dark and dangerous and touching on transgressive things. There was a thread on here a few year back where someone suggested ATWIAD the album had a very dark undertone to it. Someone recently said the audible sex part of Lady Cab Driver was RAPE.

.

I think Rock & Metal they pushed the line back in the 70s and 80s with transgressive language, and it would almost be expect with Prince as a result to compare too.

.

I would say we would have to list his 80s peers. If Madonna is one, by 1990 like Prince her foul language turn up times 6.
.
Yes I would say in comparison to his historical musical predecessors, 'he cursed like a sailor' but no one really did except maybe rock artists.

.

But looking at the totality of his work from 1978-2015 I'm only seeing 20% I mean to even count a song where he says 'ass' once it seems people are making that whole album project lyrical swearing. 1980-1989 the majority of his albums had no cursing.

.

I'm still waiting for those arguing he curse A LOT to go through the 1990-1999 period as I did with the 1980s.
