The $240 got you: - the DVD of the entire concert - the 2 CD set - 2 of the PP books (the guitar one and I forget which other one) - the Remastered PR album (vinyl) Pretty generous, I thought. I’m glad PBS AND the estate benefited [Edited 6/1/19 20:16pm]

All that for $240 is not generous at all. -The Rave 2 CD/1 DVD set is on Amazon for $30 -Purple Rain remastered vinyl is on Amazon for $22.95 -The 2 books are on Paisley park website for $35 a piece. So that's $123

This is not a criticism.

I'm guessing you are under 30; probably under 25. I'm guessing PBS was not a part of your youth; therefore, you don't know what it truly is or how it's funded.

Suffice to say that no one donated $240 to PBS because they thought it was the best way to buy those items. They donated $240 to PBS to help keep it on the air in their city, and the items were a bonus.

Exactly. PBS stays on air via some federal $$, but mainly through public donations. Just like my favorite radio station which is publicly funded. Us local lovers of real music keep it going so we don’t have to hear Ariana Grande or the latest “boy” group - wait..what’s the name of the latest one... hang on, I’ll ask my 12 yr old daughter...It’s BTS biggrin razz. Very thankful for that station and another that plays decent 80’s/90’s music.

well let me rephrase

The ONLY people I know who DON'T like it are hardcore fans and people around here.

Not saying "every hardcore fan hates it" but that "everyone who hates it seems to be a hardcore fan"

Reply I got back from my local PBS station, New Orleans:

Prince - Rave Un2 The Year 2000 - our airdate is June 16, at 10:30pm.

The concert is part of PBS pledge programs stations can choose to air in their market during June pledge, but not necessarily showing in all markets.

Well, it was on here last night on PBS. (Monday) I have neer seen the concert in it's entireity, just various parts. I myself was not crazy about all the Larry Graham footage that they included. Where he sang one of the verses on "The Christ" solo, he really did not sound that good. Especially having just listened to Prince sing before him.

In my opinion, the parts that they did air seemed disjointed, like a mis-match. People that were not Prince fans probably didn't get some of the fading from certain Prince songs into another if they were not tht familiar with his entire catolog, although we did. Rosie Gaines was featured, and at first I didn't recognize her. I guess I am used to her having highlighted hair more often. I thought she didn't act like she felt good or something, unhealthy & I hated to see that. I did think her voice was still pretty good though.

Like others have mentioned here, Prince really was not very relaxed or smiling in this footage. It honestly looked like he wished he was somewhere else. Actually this concert at PP sort of made me sad, but I don't know why. Well, at least he was on TV during primetime for a change.

Good morning children...take a look out your window, the world is falling...

Did they air the whole concert? He seemed relaxed and happy after playing The Christ. There was a funny moment when he crowd surfed on his belly and mimed like he was swimming.

Thanks so much for explaining. I'm getting tired. lol

I understand pbs needs the money.i was just trying to say why would they spend that much when they can get it much cheaper elsewhere? I know pbs get their share but they shouldve thrown in something exclusive I probably would've picked up the phone myself [Edited 6/2/19 12:53pm] [Edited 6/2/19 12:53pm] [Edited 6/2/19 23:16pm]

What you guys are forgetting is that the price includes the actual membership to your pbs station. You become a supporter of public television. biggrin

Prince, in you I found a kindred spirit...Rest In Paradise.

The local station aired a Waylon Jennings special the past two Saturdays that had premium offers with identical pricing.

June 13 it aired here. It's heavily edited. It goes from "U Got The LooK" to "Gett Off", then back to something else. It's a hot mess. They're chopping it up and using it as part of fundraising where they do 10 or 15 minute commercials inbetween.

Here are the gift offerings:

  1. $84/annual or $7 monthly for a year - DVD
  2. $120/annual or $10 montly for a year - Rave 2CD/1DVD
  3. $240/annual or $20 montly for a year - Rave 2CD/1DVD, Fashion book, Guitar & Bass book, remastered Purple Rain on vinyl.

They filmed the commercials at Paisley Park. You can see the BEAUTIFUL piano in the background, and they talk to Mitch Maguire, head of tours at Paisley Park. The commercials are actually more interesting.

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

This is the way PBS has always done their Fundraisers - commercials/promotion of fund drive alternates with parts of the performance. They never show the entire thing at one time - sort of defeats the purpose of the fund drive, as most would watch the full show and then change the channel during the fund drive.

I'm well aware how PBS does fundraisers. I live in the U.S. I watch TV, and I watch PBS regularly.

I'm scanning through the rest of the special this morning.

  1. There is a sit down interview with Bobby Z about 50 minutes into the show. (re: how he met Prince at Moon Sound)
  2. Mitch Maguire is spoken with again in the Graffiti Bridge area.
  3. Another Maguire area wiht lots of Prince clothes and costumes (I saw the gold tunic from Lopez show, a few Musicology era pieces, and the pink jacket from 3121 era with the concert on Good Morning America (with Tamar and Sheila E.).
  4. Another Bobby Z. at the end of the program (after the aforementioned clothing section. (how it was working with Prince, songs came fast, enjoyable moment was making Prince laugh)

These interviews are shorter, but still a change up of the usual fodder in a program like this.

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

I think it's great that PBS aired this. I recorded it so I can watch as many times as I want.
