I watched some of it.I don't remember for sure but I think they were trying to sell the recent Rave 2 CD/1 DVD set for about $200. We installments of $7 a month (probably because of the song "7") Really crazy because you can get that same set for $30 on Amazon. They kept interrupting the concert for their advertisement.very nice that they had Bobby z talk about prince and they showed a few rooms at Paisley park.I know it's not possible but I would love to know how many people are actually crazy enough to get the Rave set from PBS
[Edited 6/1/19 20:01pm]
[Edited 6/1/19 20:02pm]

The $240 got you:

- the DVD of the entire concert
- the 2 CD set
- 2 of the PP books (the guitar one and I forget which other one)
- the Remastered PR album (vinyl)

Pretty generous, I thought. I’m glad PBS AND the estate benefited
[Edited 6/1/19 20:16pm]

All that for $240 is not generous at all.
-The Rave 2 CD/1 DVD set is on Amazon for $30
-Purple Rain remastered vinyl is on Amazon for $22.95
-The 2 books are on Paisley park website for $35 a piece.
So that's $123

I own the dvd but I still watched it. It was on both of our local PBS stations.

It's fun to watch provided you don't project your own baggage and angst into everything Prince does as many so called fammys do. lol

Fun to watch provided you put brain and feelings aside?

Who watches cable TV anymore (besides boomers lol)?
If they want to keep his legacy alive and attract more younger fans, get his stuff on Netflix or something. Maybe release unreleased videos/live performances on there as Netflix exclusives

You do get that donations are what keeps PBS on the air, right? These gifts aren’t intended to match the amount you give, they’re just a thank you for helping out.

Not a good first impression for people that only heard of Prince in passing.

Everyone I've shared it with has loved it.

Seems it's only the hardcore fans that don't like it.

Nope, that's not true. I'm definitely a longtime hardcore fan and I love this concert. In fact, I watched it again last night on my own DVD. Love all the guests, song choices and Prince looks stunning. love

It just doesn’t have the feel of a continuous cohesive concert, but I like catching bits of it out of context.

Even though I know its probably not going to be... hoping the PBS HD station is actually somehow showing an HD version which would be a HUGE improvement over DVD or SD broadcast quality to me.

And your brain and feelings are put to better use posting dramatically that "Skipper" should have taken a vacation and done fewer splits? While blindly accusing the show of reeking of drugs and deciding Prince was being dishonest to himself? rolleyes c'mon.

I'm not sure what you mean by this as my DVD is one of the clearest dvd's I own. The sound quality is average, but the picture quality is very good on mine.

That’s strange.
I see it as supporting the Estate.
AND the public television station at the same time...
that has given me so much joy over the decades.
The fact that PBS has Prince on their station (and stated that he was much more than Purple Rain - thank you God for their education about this AND Prince in general)...
is a HUGE victory for me.
I don’t one but mind those who want to support their station buying through them.
And I think Prince would agree.

This is a good point too.
It is great to reach the many boomers and older and perhaps the young liberals or intellectuals who watch stations like PBS and BBC...
It certainly can’t hurt...
But also reach other crowds.

Y'all are killing me. lol

Public Television is not cable TV. Even though some cable systems carry a few PBS stations.

It's publically supported regular broadcast TV. PBS is a worthy cause to support.

Ftr, a shit ton of young people with kids watch PBS. It's a staple. Or, babysitter. However you want to look at it.

As much as a Let's Go Crazy update was welcome, needed even, I thought this was a really good performance of said joint. U Got the Look was rippin', too. Then, halfway through Get Off, I stopped gettin' off. I vomited glitter all over P during the shameful The Christ, but at least he looked great during Purple Rain because of it, which, coincidentally, was when things got good again smile.

I'm not sure what you mean by this as my DVD is one of the clearest dvd's I own. The sound quality is average, but the picture quality is very good on mine.

DVD's are SD (standard definition), all TV's are now HD. However, your TV or DVD player is scaling the SD DVD image up to fit your TV screen. But if it showed what was actually on the DVD it would have a large black area all around the picture since it is a small SD picture on the DVD.

The sharpness and detail and colors are much better in HD. DVD's are only around because people are too resistant to switch to blu-ray, even though they all own HD TV's. But discs are going out anyway... soon you'll notice that streaming movies look much better than your DVD's. Because. most all streaming is now HD.

For example, if you compare the blu-ray or Purple Rain to the DVD of Purple Rain on a nice TV (or on your computer screen if it is HD) you will find that the Blu-ray looks much more like it did in the movie theater on a big screen.

Below is a detail of the DVD of Purple Rain, compared to the Blu-ray of the movie. Both off the same studio master.

I understand pbs needs the money.i was just trying to say why would they spend that much when they can get it much cheaper elsewhere? I know pbs get their share but they shouldve thrown in something exclusive I probably would've picked up the phone myself

The version here in the bay area looks like the footage was thrown into a Cuisinart, poor editing.

Its doubly worse because they didnt even air the best footage which imo was "Purple House". That and the already mentioned Cheesy slo-mo's still made me cringe. Anyone whose on the fence unfortunately got exposed to the worst released footage.

This is not a criticism.

I'm guessing you are under 30; probably under 25. I'm guessing PBS was not a part of your youth; therefore, you don't know what it truly is or how it's funded.

Suffice to say that no one donated $240 to PBS because they thought it was the best way to buy those items. They donated $240 to PBS to help keep it on the air in their city, and the items were a bonus.
