ODD 'ORIGINALS' CHOICES ON ORIGINALS?! Liner notes dating correct?! Thoughts... I can't help noticing that many of the so called 'originals' were not the original versions at all and often not the best versions either (just like in the PR Deluxe they used an inferior version of The Dance Electric)
Sex Shooter for example - this was very close sounding to the 1984 released version and not the 1982 original version he originally did for Vanity which sounds quite different. (I already posted a link to this earlier version with Brenda and Susan on backing a while back, here it is:(https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RPqOfMVEA-A). I also felt his vocals were not loud enough in the mix. I was half expecting him to sing this in a more deep, slow, sensual voice, would have fit better but that's by the by!
100MPH - don't believe this is the best version I've heard.
Holly Rock - Very cool but why oh why did they leave the saxophone off this version? This is what made the song! What's odd is they (thankfully) kept the saxophone on Dear Michaelangelo and The Glamorous Life, so why not use it here? Could it be they are not using his most completed version of the song? Or just cobbled it together somehow? Seems rather inconsistent to me, especially as they were presumably recorded around the same time?
Baby You're A Trip - was delighted on first listen they used Prince's original vocals but was shocked to hear the addition of Jill's backing vocals rather than Prince's which were much more passionate and far superior IMO! Much as i liked her later 1987 version too, her vocals do not really fit here, they sound too nonchalent and lack passion which seems an odd counter balance to Prince' extremely passionate performance. As this is to me one of his best vocals EVER this detracts from it, is a disappointment to me. Maybe i'll get used to it later but it rankles knowing there is a better 'original' out there and they didn't use it. They didn't use Sheila's vocals on the songs he gave to her, so why use Jill's unless she wrote to them insisting on it?!
Love Thy Will Be Done - this sounds to me pretty much identical to the bootlegged version, as if it has been sourced from the bootleg rather than the master? They did this in PR Deluxe with some songs (Velvet Kitty Kat), here too? Considering it was from 1991 I thought the sound would be better.
Wouldn't You Love To Love Me - not sure if i'm right here but it sounds to me like this version was taken from the Rebels sessions in 79/80 rather than from 1981 as listed in the liner notes. Could it just be its listed as '81 as he reworked it or added something on top of the basic tracks then? Even the vocal style in parts is similar to what he was doing in 1979 on It's Gonna Be Lonely, it has the raw funk and style that would fit what would come out of those sessions. I also am aware there are earlier 'original' versions of this song too, but have to say in this case i'm glad they used this version as it rocks and is very catchy!
Nothing Compares 2 U - Again not the best version IMO, differs slightly from what was released last year it seems.
I also noticed that the vocals of these songs seem to have been given the addition of a slight echoey effect which I don't recall in the original bootlegged versions. It seems to be throughout the album, perhaps they added this to make it seem more 'album like' or more consistent? If so, i'd rather they hadn't and had just left them as he intended.
Apart from this they chose well with most of the other songs. Anyhow there's my 2 cents but think it would help in they would be more exhaustive in finding the 'best' or pure original versions of a particular song out there rather than what seems to come to hand easily as it seems sometimes!
Although this in interesting, I feel that these really were demo guide vocals and he would never have intended them for release. I think it would be better for the estate now to focus on releasing the fully completed versions of the hundreds of songs in the vault that require no tinkering to the content (aside from a remaster).

You couldn't find the 31-page sticky? We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

Yes Miss. Pedant but doubt anyone is going to be reading that now after this time!

Well I guess intelligent response to what is written is too much for some people here so they have to rely on pedantry!

Haha, King Pedant of them all returns hahahah Maybe we should have an .org wedding, Genesia and Bart! LOL
There doesn't seem to be much analysis or decent criticism on the recent part of that thread, just you posting newspaper reviews Bart and getting pedantic with people.

[Edited 7/1/19 13:12pm] 100% agree I have enjoyed the album especially Make up and manic Monday but some songs feel cobbled and tinkered with they aren’t always the best versions and i felt the same. Also pissed at how ‘the originals’ weren’t invited to be more involved.
