I just watched Wine Country: a movie with Maya Rudolph in it and was pleasantly surprised that she found a way to mention her love for Prince in it, and used a cover of IWD4U as the closing song and assume it's her group (named Princess?) that is covering.

I know she's a big fan and am assuming she asked the estate for one of his songs (in the part where they each picked a song) and they declined as she used the song Poison. Side note: Poison reminds me a bit of P's We Can Funk song. www.netflix.com/title/80194950

You don't need permission to re-record someone's song.
The only permission would be in the form of a license to use the original recording.

Yes, that's it. But I'm not sure which P song it reminds me of. I can only recall a snipit in my head, the lyrics were: "make sweet love to you, one time, maybe two" or something like that. I hate getting old and not having a sharp memory anymore!

I'm really surprised you didn't mention the whole scene where her and another girl are in the hot tub talking about Prince. It's about the 26 or 27 minute mark. It's endearing and nice.

I was just going to post this. We just finished watching it, and I always read thru the credits, esp the music.

Wendy and Lisa did the score to the movie, as well. I can't imagine that's not a Maya move across the board.

It's certainly not a spoiler. It's not condusive to the plot, it's just a moment in a hot tub. They could've been talking about anything or anyone. It's definitely something to look forward to in the film.

She's been a long time fan of him; common knowledge. Plus she was raised in a music family (she even paid tribute to one of her mom's album covers on SNL), so her finding and really knowing Prince doesn't seem too much of a surprise. I'm glad they had as many Prince moments as they did. It was fun.

They also performed Darling Nikki on Jimmy Fallon with The Roots shortly after Prince passed. Very cool - they did the backmasking sounds at the end. * Susannah recently posted an Instagram pic with Wendy stating they were with Maya. Wondering if they performed with Princess or just watched the show.

Her father, and Minnie's widower, Richard Rudolph is still alive. She has an older brother born in 1968. Minnie was also known as the "queen of the whistle register" back in the day. Mariah gets a lot of attention for that, but Minnie was doing it, and doing it well, two-plus decades before that. She died way too young. Richard is a writer & producer and has worked with big names in the industry. Teena Marie, Q-Tip, Jermaine Jackson, Michael McDonald, Chaka Khan, Tupac Shakur, Patti Austin, and many more.

Interesting note about "Loving You", from Wikipedia: "According to the liner notes from Riperton's compilation album Petals, the melody for "Lovin' You" was created to be a distraction for her baby daughter (Maya Rudolph) so that Minnie and her husband Richard could hang out. Maya was in the studio with Riperton on the day it was recorded and Riperton can be heard singing her daughter's name at the end, but only in the unedited or album version. The song fades out early in the radio edit because the disc jockeys felt that the repeated "Maya" was being overdone and that it would be misunderstood as a religious chant."

Maya was great, but I think Paula Pell was hilarious. She had some great scenes- the car scene with the Uber driver, the Vibrator giveaway, the “what age do you feel” scene and more. Many don’t know that she was an SNL writer for years and created many of the classic skits - The Cheerleaders, The Kulps, the “tiny hands” skit with Kristen Wig, the Mom Jeans commercial, the Justin Timberlake singing characters etc. She is hilarious!!

Paula definitely stole the scenes she was in, I agree. One of the funniest, because it was just so simple was "I tried Molly in college," (beat) "but she went back to her boyfriend. HEEYYOOO!!"
