Prince
His Majesty's Pop Life/Purple Mix Club (Warner Bros.)
The Versace Experience (Prelude 2 Gold) (Legacy Recordings)

We may have yet to see the real treasures that abound in the mythical vault of the late Prince Rogers Nelson. But this slow drip of titles from inside its confines is moving along at a swagger as cool as its creator. And this RSD, two true holy grails will be up for grabs and will surely have hardcore Prince fans up bright and early Saturday morning. From Warner Bros. comes a highly rare Japanese import from the Around The World in a Day era. Originally released in an increment of 500 copies, this four-sided remix album features different versions of such beloved Purple faves as "Let's Go Crazy," "Little Red Corvette" and the complete "Erotic City." Meanwhile, Legacy Recordings comes through with one of the hardest-to-find Prince Easter eggs in existence. Initially created as a gift for people who attended Gianni Versace's Fashion Week exhibit in Paris just before the release of his Gold Experience LP in 1995, The Versace Experience cassette is a career-spanning mixtape containing unique snippet versions of several Gold tracks, exclusive material from the New Power Generation and songs from the guitarist's unsung fusion group Madhouse.

I like that it's a faithful reissue of the original cassette. Maybe it will get a vinyl release on Cassette Store Day later this year.

Just back from my first Record Store Day experience. It was totally worth waiting in line outside the store for over an hour. Got the 2 Prince releases I went for and a couple other things I couldn't pass up (the Parliaments 10" is sweeeeet!).

These releases are much cooler than the UK single disc 1999 LP from last year, but, it would be really nice if they'd do an RSD of something other than a reissue. How about a 12" for "The War"? Or a 10" of "F.U.N.K."/"Turn Me Loose" I dunno, just an idea.

I really like how the Record Store Day sticker on the Prince record has been changed to Wrecka Stow Day. Cool detail!!

My haul...

Feel sickened. Queued and queued. They’d gone by the time I got in, yet already there are hundreds on eBay. Going for well above what they cost. Meaning hundreds of horrors or bastards who went to buy things, not even to have them but to make a profit on eBay. DOOMED!!!

Yeah.... there were a bunch of ebayers ahead of me in line. Even with a 1 each limit at my store, some stuff was gone b4 we got in. Lucky for me those guys wanted Dylan and Pearl Jam, we had plenty of Prince when I went through.

EDIT: Mikey, check your store(s) again tomorrow and Mon and Tues, etc... At my store they get more shipments in the days following RSD and often have stuff that they sold out of on SAT.

Man, went to three record stores in Richmond and all of them sold out of the Versace experience cassette. I did manage to grab a couple of His Majesty POP Life vinyls but that’s it.

There’s only the one independent in Preston, Action (world famous) - gonna call them Monday and see if they have any and nip down if they do. It’s frightening how many are on eBay. My flabbers are gasted.

Tape was gone by the time i had a look, ah well. His Majesty's Pop Life was gone as well but tbh i dont think i was willing to pay 40 odd euro for it, was going to decide in person. Ill probably just buy some old single i dont have instead. Hope it sounds good though!

Similar for me. I have one record store an hours drive away. I knew some were camping the night as it was on the stores twitter feed, but obviously I didn't know what they wanted. By 5.30am they had 40 people in their queue. I knew they only had 4 copies of the cassette and 6 copies of Pop Life so I knew my chances weren't good. As I suspected when I spoke to the owner when I got there, I was infomed that even if I'd have got there at 6.00am I wouldn't have got what I wanted. I had to drive a 2 hour journey for nothing, and then I see hundreds on ebay. Non fans buying for profit sad

I guess the stores will get some more stock and eventually every fan who wants to buy these will find their copies. I don't think the demand would be much higher than the 14,000 copies (of HMPL) or 4000 (of the Versace tape) pressed worldwide. So the ebayers will probably have to lower their prices soon.

I just got the record and the cassette, 16:30 local time...i went in for the new budos band album, and they had the record on the shelf so i asked about the cassette. Dude said they sold out first thing, but when i got to the register, he threw one up on the counter and said 'this guy didn't pick his up in time'. God bless 'em....it pays to shop at the same record store for 30 years.

I managed to get one from BK Music but that took getting there at 5am this morning to wait in line. It looked like they only had 6 total (Versace tapes).

Our local shop closed last month so we went into the next town -- and found out that they had (unadvertised) opened two hours early. The line was still backed out of the door and moving slowly.

By the time we got inside, there was only one Versace Experience left -- although there were six RMPL albums.

Now, I'm on attempt #5 of using an unfamiliar USB Cassette>MP3 recorder so I can put it on my iPod. The cassette should have come as a set with a CD twin.

Welcome to "the org", laytonian… come bathe with me.

Got the vinyl, missed out on the cassette.

Thought it would have been cool to have, but I luckily have a digital version of Vercace and no cassette player. lol!

Not a fan of the gold exp but versace tape is an enjoyable listen ... fun remixes and shorter edits ... it works better as a tape .. kinda like lovesexy as one track ... snips are too short for tracking

Download codes would suffice. I made digital copies of both from the first playback but not everybody has the equipment and/or the ability to do a quality transfer. Download codes included should be standard with analog releases.

I bought the cassette (even though I have no way to listen to it), the Pop Life vinyl, and the Sugar Walls picture disc.

The Record Store I go to doesn’t just buy a bunch of stuff and hope it sells. I actually submitted a wishlist a month ago. The Prince releases were on it, but I didn’t know about Sugar Walls until a couple days ago. I totally lucked out with that one - they had one unsold copy.

I was able to find the 12” “Majesty” vinyl locally - got the last one! The local store sold out of their Versace cassettes.

If I had to pick one to have, it’d be the vinyl. Can’t believe the Versace mix was on cassette only. Cassettes are not a trend I’m looking to help bring back.
