I think Benni’s Post was countering yours and muchtoofast’s interpretation that his anger was caused by any issues he had with JW. She was clarifying that Prince’s anger on April 16th was a reaction to the media’s and fans’ response to the Moline incident. He was angry about the rumors and widespread coverage, which makes sense based on the level of privacy he always tried to maintain. * Prince’s anger was not directed at the JW that night. [Edited 5/10/19 8:20am]
Thanks, violet! Exactly!

Prince was angry April 16th. Keep in mind that there had been reports about the plane situation in Moline Illinois and everyone speculating. Not to mention that his twitter feed was blowing up with people telling him to "take care of himself" and other fans that had thought he had already died. Prince had the party at Paisley on April 16th, to specifically show his fans that he was "okay", that he "had not died", and that when they hear reports like that in the media, to wait and get the truth. That was what his entire comment about wait a few days before shedding tears came from. Someone truncated it, because in context he was talking about the reports that had come out about Moline, and fans being distraught at Prince's passing, etc. He wanted people to not believe everything they were reading in the news, to wait a few days, make sure the report is accurate, before getting so distraught. I think there was even a fan that had posted on twitter that her life was over since Prince was gone, and was threatening suicide. And Prince wasn't gone yet. Yeah, I think I'd be a little ticked off around then, too.
I'm taken aback by the defensive tone of your post, were you assuming I was somehow implying his angry feelings were not valid?
Umm, I wasn't being defensive at all. I was simply pointing out that Prince was angry that night and the report that he was angry was accurate, but that it had to do with the recent news reports of the airplane incident (reports were a day earlier - on the 15th), and fans reactions to it. I was not implying that you were saying his feelings weren't valid.
Unless you are referencing my very last sentence and that is what you took issue with in my post. I was simply stating, that "yeah, I'd be ticked too if that had happened to me" a sort of "I can't blame him for being upset that night". I mean, it just totally blew up.
Even Dr. Funkenberry did a podcast about his feelings and why he wanted to hold the party that night. Dr. Funk stated something along the lines of, "He kept saying he couldn't believe how people were reacting." He'd been fielding phone calls all day from people calling to make sure he was okay, friends, prior associates, etc. I can't even begin to imagine what he was going through the 15th and 16th.
Ok thanks for the explanation. I was reading too much into it. My bad! |

I noticed in the investigative files in Princes office on the main floor - one of the boxes contained a copy of the JW Book "When Someone You Love Dies". The book was at the top in the box and the box was next to his desk. This is the office that had the pictures of Yara Shahidi, etc. Just wondering Prince's state of mind if he was reading this book or maybe he could have been packing it away

Ok thanks for the explanation. I was reading too much into it. My bad! Knowing what we know now - although even back then the way Prince’s camp publicly explained the Moline event - the media’s and public’s concern was very justified. Planes don’t make emergency landings for dehydration caused by Flu, which was the story given. I’m surprised Prince was angry about the fans’ concerns. He knew how dire the situation was in Moline. He knew the Doctors saved his life that night. T believe that Doctor was his guest at PP on April 16th. * The whole thing is just so sad. So so sad that he didn’t get help in time |

My grandma, who was like a mother to me, was a JW but never pushed it on me at all. She was very respectful of my beliefs and would engage me in intelligent debate on any subject, including religion.
He fucking friend though that lives down the street from me (I live in her old house) DOES...NOT...STOP...and WILL...NOT...TAKE...a..HINT. Or even a polite yet direct request to kindly knock it the fuck off. I avoid her as much as possible but inevitabley run into her since she lives on my street and without fail, there's always some pamphlet, some shit about "the devil" being the cause of all my ills and a sympathy card with hand written Jesus stuff all over it whenever I suffer a loss.
I've asked her repeatedly and nicely to stop and told her I'm not interested yet she persists. I find it rude and condescending. She wonders why I avoid her. She ALSO tries to witness my son, who is now 8, and to me that crosses a line. That's MY JOB and HIS journey. SHe'll buy him Jesus/JW books for his birthday and shit (which is weird because they're not supposed to celebrate holidays) and then bug the shit out of me later, pestering me to tell her how much he loved the gifts.
Her house has flooded 2x (hurricane Irma and Matthew). Devil did that apparently. New stuff with insurance check? That was God.
Man, the cognitive dissonance it takes to be devoutly religious is just something that's always been utterly baffling to me - ever since I stopped believing in Santa and the Easter Bunny. I respect other people's faith but I'll be damned if they seem to respect mine (atheist/agnostic) no matter how polite I am about it.
It's a real turn off and reeks of condescention and arrogance.
I got news for you: anyone who thinks they know "the truth" and has all the answers...? They don't know shit and are trying to convince themselves. I'll include Prince in that as well. They're seeking validation and they're virtue signaling. I admire a lot of what he accomplished and the way he lived his life but drew the line at that whole "you're over here and you're over there" stuff.
noun
noun: virtue signalling; noun: virtue signaling
-
the action or practice of publicly expressing opinions or sentiments intended to demonstrate one's good character or the moral correctness of one's position on a particular issue.

Right, but keep in mind, no one would have known anything had gone on, had it not been for TMZ following him. And he had some pretty hysterical fans tweeting him on twitter. Plus, he may have thought it all blew over, he was fine (we know now he wasn't but at the time, I'm sure Prince believed it wouldn't happen again so he thought he was fine), and he wakes up to fans going crazy on social media and people from all over calling him to check on him. To him, it was over and done with and no longer a big deal. But now he had to do PR on an incident he went to bed believing he would not have to do PR on.

I don't think he planned on anyone making a fuss over it. I don't think he planned on anyone knowing about it. He was in the ER all night, after performing 2 sets, had to stick it out in the ER until the following morning, got home and probably went straight to bed. Imagine the chaos he woke up to. Old proteges and friends calling him, people he hadn't from in quite some time. Fans going nuts on twitter, even one fan threatening suicide because she thought he was gone already. People were getting upset because he wasn't responding and letting them know he was okay (probably because he was sleeping when the news broke)....it wasn't that he didn't expect anyone to not make a fuss (keep in mind he told them that when they hear news like that again, to hold their prayers, wait a few days, make sure it was true and that the prayers were actually needed - so he knew people would make a fuss, it was just he was okay and people were acting like he had already died).

I don't know about any of that but the timing of it all seemed to coincide.
Larry coming in as a father figure makes sense on a certain level too. I never really cared what Prince got into on that level but I have to admit being a tad turned off by the uptick in preachiness and self righteousness that came along around TRC and ONA.
I know his conversion was before that but, man, he really dialed it up to 11 around the early 2000's, I preferred his more inclusive and..."welcoming" I guess...material from 1999 and Dirty Mind and preferred spending my timein Uptown more than The Digital Garden. His anonymous philanthropic efforts over the years seemed to suggest he indeed walked the walk but sometimes I got the feeling he was trying to have it both ways with the flashy clothes, the adultery and all the "no-no's" that go with being a JW.
It's pretty obvious to me that Prince was always seeking something higher that he never got from his parents (security, love, nurturing, trust) and largely channeled it through his music (and sexuality, daring, androgyny, etc.) More power to him as far as I'm concerned. He had a hell of a ride and accomoplished soooo much. I won't hold a religious decision against someone but that doesn't mean I'm going along with it.

I don’t think Prince’s intensified “preaching” in the early 2000’s was tied to losing his Mother and Father. He began “studying” (as he would label it) with Larry Graham in the ‘96-‘97 time frame. Larry was teaching him the JW beliefs. He began publicly discussing the JW beliefs (Stauros - how Christ died) in 1998. It was discussed during several TV interviews and during his performances. His “preaching” ramped up in the early 2000’s, because he officially became a member of the JW faith in 2000 or 2001 and was baptized as well. * While he was initially exposed to religion through his parents I don’t think they shared that connection later in life. He stated in 1997, during his interview with Chris Rock, that he was taught to fear God and he didn’t think that was right. His parents were 7th Day Adventists which is a very strict and stringent denomination. |

Nah, that thinking is a bit naive. Prince had been dealing with that kind of press and fan attention since the Purple Rain days. I have no doubt that he expected the reaction. Emergency landings are always big with the media. Also, by that point many who were following Prince knew something was not right with his health. His anger most likely came from those who were questioning the explanation (which was most everyone) and/or rumors that he had died. |

Yes, but there have no reported emergency plane landings, questioning of his health, belief that he had died in all those years. Usually, it was just fanatical fans and people idolizing him. For as big of a star as he was, there has been very little negative press about him (especially on main stream media). Gossip rags, yeah, he expected that. This was reported on by major news networks. AND he was on a plane, on his way home, who could expect TMZ to get a scoop about an emergency plane landing in Moline, Illinois of all places and to know that it was Prince's plane that had made the emergency landing, and main stream news sources to start reporting on it? I mean, someone in his camp had to have called TMZ to tell them Prince made an emergency plane landing, that Prince was rushed to the hospital, unconscious. Kind of the ultimate betrayal, yeah?, knowing how private Prince was and how he protected those most private parts of his life?

There were many people, in addition to his camp, involved in the Moline emergency landing - the flight crew, the flight control crew, the EMTs on the scene, the hospital staff, etc. TMZ could have been tipped off by any number of people - it most likely was not someone from his camp. Prince had gone through large bouts with the press in the past - the We Are The World debacle in 1985, the media bashing when he changed to the symbol, and the strange Oprah interview right after death of his Son. Again, any type of plane emergency landing is a big deal, and even bigger when it involves a celebrity. Not at all surprising that TMZ or any other media outlet got the information - especially in 2016. |

TMZ was following him for a reason. The Blind Item that was published probably started tipping off the gossip sites. I don't believe the pilots or the flight crew tipped off TMZ, in fact when the paramedics arrived they didn't know who it was and was mistaken for a lady until a paramedic recognized him. Maybe the gossip sites were monitering him because he had cancelled a couple of shows. But it is rather odd that TMZ would be in Moline at just the right time. And it could have been just a regular person who videoed it and found out later it was Prince and sold the video to TMZ. |

Him on the strecher on the tarmac.

Right, I don’t think an individual was filming the Moline scene. There are cameras all over airports, especially around the tarmac areas. Or, could have been filmed by someone in the airport. Smart phone video is anywhere and everywhere. |

That's what I said. You said you find it odd that TMZ would have been at the Moline airport, right? I don’t think someone from TMZ was physically there. Someone sent them the footage, or they were able to obtain the airport video. I thought the video of the landing was shown after the initial story broke. * If anything, beside all of the attention - I think Prince would have been most angry about the video footage. |

The CCTV video footage is from a distance, of poor quality and shows barely anything. If other sources had not placed Prince at the scene he would've had plausible deniability regards the footage as he is not at all discernable. All that can really be seen is a plane and an ambulance. It remains conjecture perhaps, but it has been reported that Prince experienced an earlier OD incident in 2010 and was assisted by NPG band members. This incident obviously never reached the press, which may have accounted for Prince's surprise on this occasion, though an emergency in the air is obviously more public. Prince had undergone hip surgery and at least one other hospital visit (in 2013/14 as reported by Kirk in the police investigation files) and none of these had reached the press and garnered any public reaction either. |

If a major celebrity is being rushed to the hospital (or wipes thier ass with their off hand), TMZ is going to be there. It's essentially all they do.
There's nothing off or unusual about someone as famous Prince being rushed to the hospital and those vultures and parasites having reporters on the ground taking pictures.

Wait..what's this thread about again? Jehovah Witnesses, right? Come to think of it, shouldn't this thread go in P&R? |
