The Funkiest Funk What song(s) do you guys considder his most funky ? And I mean 'funk'. Knowing that '1999' to me is pop, and less funk, likewise for 'When Doves Cry' and 'Little Red Corvette' or 'Take Me With U'. - I'll go for these (hard to choose) : - Housequake (all versions) - Alphabet St. (album version) - Let's Work (long version) - Dance Music Sex Romance - Can I Play With U (all versions) - All The Critics Love U In New York - Lady Cab Driver and for some reason also - Mountains (extended version)

Head Controversy Let's Work Girls and Boys Gett off The Gold Standard
To me, one thing that sets Prince's funk apart from other musicians is that it's often driven by a nasty little guitar riff rather than a bass. For instance, the guitar intro on the extended version of U Got the Look. There's also the second half of the extended version of Kiss where the funk is driven more by the guitar than the syth. It's a sound he went back to time-and-time again, but I'll never

- Head, sure ! great funk. Controversy, I considder that dance-pop rather than good funk. Same goos for Girls And Boys, too pop for my funk. But great song though thanks to the 'funky' barriton saxophone by Eric Leeds. God I miss Eric Leeds' wonderful sax arrangements in most of the later Prince material. Gett Off, absolutely ! The Gold Standard..... nah, too.... i don't know. It lacks the great funk we already all know. - And you're right. The guitar driven nasty bits in songs make it super funky, like the one in Shockadelica ! My favourite funky bass is the inexplicable funky bass in the extended version of Alphabet St. Pure! Genius! And it's true, although I find Kiss not a funky song at all (for me it'smore of a bluesy dance pop song, whatever...), but indeed the extended part has a tremendous funky guitar licks in there. -

- Indeed great (but slow and nasty) funk ! - "The whole problem with the world is that fools and fanatics are always so certain of themselves. And wiser people so full of doubts" (Bertrand Russell 1872-1972)

- I absolutely agree on the ones I put in bold up here. But most of the others are more pop to me. Sexy Dancer is disco. But good disco. It's gonna be a beautiful night is a party dance song, and doesn't have that 'funk' for me. Although the end part, where they all go crazy is wonderful ! Prettyman, is pretty funky too. And Party Up is more of a new-wave pop-ish rock song to me. Great song though. - "The whole problem with the world is that fools and fanatics are always so certain of themselves. And wiser people so full of doubts" (Bertrand Russell 1872-1972)

- Rhythmic is Superfunky indeed. But this song lack a bit of... well old school Prince funk to me. - "The whole problem with the world is that fools and fanatics are always so certain of themselves. And wiser people so full of doubts" (Bertrand Russell 1872-1972)

Head is Prince’s funkiest track. That bassline is just masterful. The Time’s catalogue too, of course. [Edited 4/14/19 12:59pm] Prince: 1958-infinity. Thank U for everything.
