What I am saying is there are licenses out there with different people and labels. There is a Tidal deal, there is a vinyl deal there is a after 1995 deal there is the early years deal, there is not ONE source that can and is saying do it this way or this is what we can do for you. If he was ON ONE LABEL which he was not this could be different because they would present it and then its one source. But you have people all over and then no set person in charge with reissues. Morris Hayes said a few months ago "I offered to help in anway i could and no one ever called". This is so different than the situations with Bowie and others because they had control of their work, Prince never really had control, even in 2014 when he "got it back" there was clueless rumors to the PR reissue and it never happened till he died. I think people jsut think this VAULT is set up where you can come in and take a time period and go. But I wouldnt be surprised and some have said this also, "that alot of what he compiled, was not complete, was not stored right, he was not ever intending this to come out he just was creating the enigma of it" and I buy that more than a few thousand songs mastered and ready to come out that have never been out, as time goes on I believe less and less in what the VAULT has. Which is why fans are always going to be letdown, i said this a year ago and it remains true, be thankful if you get anything released at this point. The songs for the French shows were poorly chosen. One show he shouldn't have done at all, Tout Lara Fabian: this was variety songs for yo grandma, the anti-hip show by excellence, young people made lots of fun of him for playing there. TGRES was the right song I guess, but still... He shouldn't have done that show. Hit Machine was targeted at teens, so TGRES was the last thing to play there because the kids would fall asleep, it should have been a Undisputed, Hot Wit U or So Far So Pleased, something loud and dynamic the kids could relate to. Nulle Part Ailleurs had a hipper audience, basically 15-35 metropolitan target, and there playing Alphabet St. was OK but old news, and Baby Knows was a terrible choice because it was a very typically American, almost redneck song, not what this sophisticated audience would want. Prettyman would have been perfect for this one because funk was making a come back at the time, thought any of the 3 I mentioned above could have worked. . Now I realize Prince wasn't supposed to know the demographics of each foreign TV show, but either he or the label should have had people who did to advise him. I’m totally underwhelmed by the Rave Unto reissue, although it makes sense given that it’s been 20 years since it’s release. I will buy it eventually. I would love a celebration of the Batman soundtrack, which is great, although I will admit that Batman took a few listens to “grow on” me. . I was 13 when Rave was released and remember seeing the poster for Rave at my local music store, Easy Street in Seattle. I saw him pictured in that blue pleather suit and the pigtails, and this look just reinforced my view of as this weirdo musician who changed his name to a symbol and wrote SLAVE across his face. He was not “cool” at this time and, besides the song 1999 being relevant given that the year was 1999, he was totally irrelevant to my generation at the time. *NSYNC, Christina Aguilera, Backstreet Boys, Britney, Lauryn Hill, TLC, Santana, Smashmouth, Ricky Martin, Destiny’s Child, Will Smith, JLo, Foo Fighters, Ginuwine, Savage Garden, and Blink 182 were cool among teenagers at the time, among others. . I have listened to Rave Unto straight through one time. I rarely listen to any of its songs. I like the remix of Hot Wit U. I speculate that Hot Wit U could have been popular if Prince’s fashion and overall image had been cooler. However, Rave Unto was not a good enough album to appeal as an album to the masses at this time, as Santana was able to do with Supernatural. There is nothing to get, there is not one source, and there isnt one person that is running the show at his estate. There are seven different label deals floating around with promises of records that are probably not coming out or are far in the distance, the only thing that seems to be consistent are the book releases that has no contract or deal. There is no set plan for any reissues, those behind RAVE are totally different than those behind Purple Rain remaster and Piano and a Microphone, Im not sure why people think there is one person running this show. No its not made up the deals were to get his music, he had music on many labels as we all know and despite owning masters of these albums he was not the one pressing them, the only thing he pressed were things strictly through NPG like Crystal Ball, also Digital deals are different than physical albums especially in form of payments, digital is basically nothing. So though "the estate" puts it under one umbrella, its got deals all over the place to secure this stuff, Tidal has its own deal etc... Well I picked up my vinyl copies of Un2 and In2 yesterday....
can't speak about the CD release, of course, as haven't heard it, but, the vinyl versions - just as with 3121, Musicology and Planet Earth - are absolute stellar!
Dead quiet vinyl, beautiful sounding pressings - immediately the definitive versions of these albums, for me, without all the distortion and brickwalling that went on on the original CD releases.
Also, nice that Pretttyman is included on the original Un2 vinyl, after a silent gap track, whereas it was CD only before and didn't feature on the original vinyl release.
Shame there's no lyric booklet with either album, but otherwise, well done Sony. These are beautifully produced records.

I’ve only listened to the first record of Un2 so far. Unfortunately, my copy has TONS of surface noise. Ugh. I’m going to put it through the Spin Clean tomorrow. Ah, that's a shame. Definitely get it replaced if a clean doesn't do it.... because mine really does sound great.... probably In2 sounds even better than Un2, but I have no complaints on either....
and to correct my earlier post, I'll admit I hadn't made it to the end of Side 4 of Un2 when I posted it! The sound IS great throughout, but it's not a silent gap track before Prettyman, it's the 1800-NEW-FUNK commercial, as per the original CD... of course! I'd forgotten about that!
Hope you get a copy that sounds as good as it should - or get yours playing clean.

Also, can anyone confirm the quality of the DVD in the new 'Ultimate Rave' package?
I have the original DVD and am assuming the new one is just a straight copy, with the same choppy edits and minmal extras, etc... if the new one is somehow magically better quality (something I doubt is possible), it would be great to hear about it...
Thanks, R. | |

Even if it was remastered, which it probably wasn't, it wouldn't affect what you mention: the edits and bonus groovez were the video album as Prince envisioned it and it shouldn't be changed. Now it wouldn't be insane to imagine that one day the complete show could be re-edited and released as it happened, those bonus edits certainly are frustrating (particularly Flash Light) but then it would exclude the Time songs that were played the day before, or then both shows, including P's performance and the complete Time performance could be included. In any case, it is not the purpose of this rerelease. A COMPREHENSIVE PRINCE DISCOGRAPHY (work in progress ^^): https://sites.google.com/...scography/

Yeah, agree with that... I guess I was thinking more of the actual quality of the image and sound in the rerelease... I'm assuming the content really is the same, but if somebody bought and thought 'oh wow, this looks/sounds markedly better than my old DVD of this show', that would be good to know.
It's unlikely to happen, I know, as I believe it was shot on SD video.

Mine arrived today!!! "I like to watch."
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
Got mine yesterday. Pretty excited, and then, like the first time I saw rave 200, I was underwhelmed. Dont get me wrong, Im very happy to have it, but the slow motion and freeze frame stuff was pretty brutal. Still, the excitement of opening it with my kids and watching with them for the first time was a great experience. My girls are 6 and 8 and they danced and really enjoyed rave 2000 and ask me tons of questions about Prince. I would buy it all over again and basically anything else they rerelease. Receiving new Prince material will always be an incredible experience for me, ALWAYS. Hell, I would buy a jughead single on vinyl. (Insert something clever here)
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
I would expect a 10 disc box set of Jughead-"The Mister Money Minder Experience."
A mind blowing experience of Prince having Tony M explain the perils of the music business in the most subtle voice. And to show the estate is listening to our compliants, each of the ten discs will be filled up with at least 9 minutes of each disc...but wait...there's more:
A 4 Disc DVD/VHS combo, each one with the 4 minute unreleased Jughead video. It was suggested that it be transferred to Blu-Ray for superior Audio quality, but the original multi-tracks were placed on a 78 record, and then split into 16 tracks designed for 78 records.
And back on topic. I want Ultimate Rave, but will get it used, as it is almost a pointless release, although anyone who likes pressed releases and was not an NPGMC member to get the remix disc.

I noticed Prettyman missing from both trackists. Odd. It was a bonus on Un2 but included on the track list for In2 originally. I’m guessing the song is on both but just isn’t listed. Has this been remastered in any way? We're here, might as well get into it.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
It was released in 1999 not 1983. So based on the price and just using common sense, I would say no possible way would they remaster it. Now I think the original mastering is a bit loud, but most "remastered" music just means they make it as loud as possible, and so loud it is distorted. So nothing after 1994 has any real need to be remastered. Now somebody who cared about sound quality was in the Prince camp, I'd love to have the post 1995 albums mastered properly. AOA and especially Plectrum Electrum sound really bad. Some of the U2 remasters sound fantastic. The first run of Duran Duran remasters sound pretty good, and then the deluxe ones with dvds sound worse than anything I have ever heard. [Edited 5/7/19 17:42pm]
