SPIKE LEE, PRINCE ESTATE SUED 'GIRL 6' THEME COPIED MY SONG https://www.tmz.com/2019/...ringement/
Fresh off his very first Oscar win, Spike Lee's got a new legal headache ... over one of his movies from the '90s and a Prince song.

Why? Because it contains musical notes, of which there actually are not that many? 👺👺👺👺👺 Welcome to "the org", laytonian… come bathe with me.

Girl 6 came out in,what,1996? And he’s just *now* deciding to sue? furthermore,I seriously doubt that Prince ever heard his “Phone Sex” song. This lawsuit is bogus.

Prince did not write the music for that song, just the lyrics.

Tommy Barbarella is responsible for the music and Kirk the drum programming. Prince wrote the lyrics and performed vocals. The 'Girl 6' spoken parts originate from the actual film. In addition, this guy has tried to make this case unsuccessfully twice before, so a bit of a non-story.

"Girl6" STAYED in my playlist FOREVER! The beat is intoxicating & Prince's(r.i.p.) layered vocals are unmatched. . I mean, you can literally google the song he's supposed to have copied and listen to it, but apparently such extensive research is too much trouble for some. . Then again, there are fans who claim Prince never sampled anyone. © Bart Van Hemelen

The complete OST definitely stays with WB anyway, and I don't see WB making it a priority. IIRC Prince had managed to keep the masters for the title track, which was (p) NPG Records (I'd have to double check that, though), but it was credited to the NPG, and IDK if Legacy has any rights to the NPG records, and the fact that it was used on a WB OST anyway might make things complicated... My guess is that that song was already in legal limbo without that lawsuit. A COMPREHENSIVE PRINCE DISCOGRAPHY (work in progress ^^): https://sites.google.com/...scography/

Prince added lyrics and vocals based on a demo Tommy presented him from his home studio. Even the drum programming was done by Kirk. This was a fairly rare (at least for that era) collaborative piece, but if anybody needs to be sued it would be Tommy. And the source of 'Phone Sex' would obviously be Spike himself. * [Edited 3/3/19 3:54am] [Edited 3/3/19 3:54am] [Edited 3/3/19 3:58am]

Tommy was in a band called Greazy Meal and his song "Old Soul Cafe" sounds just like Girl 6. They were both released in 1996

Yeah, the way you broke it down sounds much more believable.I don't believe that Prince "ripped anyone off" and I still doubt that he even heard the "Phone Sex" demo.
