I would call it "Slave". How ironic it would be .
Every CD would be linked to each other by a chain, that you d have to break to listen to it. To create your own emancipation, in a sense.

How would you call it, if neither Slave nor Emancipation were on it?

jk....I have warm spot in my heart for Emancipation. 1996 was a great year for me and it takes me back to that time. I think the signature tracks from that album are Friend, Lover, Sister, Mother/Wife, Sex in the Summer, Holy River or Lets Have a Baby. Either of them would make a great title track.

Mayte, having poor baby Amir and settling down were what he had most on his mind at this time before tragedy struck. It would be a very different Prince that followed and I suspect he would still be with us had Amir survived.

Liberation or Independence

.

Freedom and slavery have been recurring themes in a number of songs that Prince wrote throughout his career, starting around 1980 right up to his last album. He did a lot of interviews in 1996 to promote Emancipation and it was evident how happy he was about having been able to create this album in an environment of true artistic freedom. (Emancipation was Prince's first album to be released following the end of his contract with WB, and his third album as prince.) Emancipation was more than just an album concept; it meant something deeply personal to Prince, a point which is driven home by his choice of cover art for the album showing him breaking his chains. Not to mention the man nearly tanked his career battling WB over rights to his future master recordings and to determine his own musical output.

.

So if the song "Emancipation" had theoretically been removed from the album, like fans did with the 'Love Symbol' album, I would refer to this release as the Liberation or Independence album as it reflects the symbolic statement made on the cover. I would ditch the usual practice of naming the album after one of its tracks and instead title it based on the intended theme as it marked a new chapter in Prince's career when he was becoming an independent artist.

I don't get the hate either. IMO it is on par with any of his albums from the 80s. Different flavor but the quality of the songs are the same. Many great songs to be found! I'd add to your list Curious Child, Sleep Around, Right Back Here In My Arms, Saviour, In This Bed Eye Scream, Human Body, Soul Sanctuary, Damned If Eye Do, Sex In The Summer...I could go on. Wonderful album.
