1. New Power Soul (the first time that I acutally gave up on him for a while. I remember feeling sad and disoriented because he was coming to town and I just didn't want to go.... it was weird but once LG came into the picture... forget it, the music really suffered.

2. Planet Earth - I don't think there is a single gem on this album... though there are parts of Future Baby Mama & Resolution that stick in my head... but neither is a classic.... I can barely remember any of these songs... I rememeber feeling let down bc he had been on such a good roll.

3. Plectrum Electrum - I just can't ..... at least there is WOW - which is just a PHENOMENAL song... and then the rest...... hmmmmm

3 clunkers but so many other beautiful things for us to enjoy

In no order:

The Rainbow Children

Musicology

PlectrumElectrum

Most of the NPGMC stuff like things that ended up on Chocolate Invasion, Slaughterhouse, etc. It's all one lump of acrylic boredom to me. I almost lump N.E.W.S. as well because it was the same jazzy time period.

Not counting the instrumental ones (Kamasutra, N.E.W.S., Xpectation) or NPG stuff (Goldnigga), I'd say my least favorite albums are:

Plectrumelectrum

Lotusflow3r

and a tie between:

The Vault Old Friends 4 Sale
(Old Friends 4 Sale, 5 Women and There is Lonely being the standouts for me)

The Black Album (with a slight edge for this one, because I really love Bob George and Cindy C.)

I can only come up with two forgettable albums:
Kamasutra
Indigo Nights
The rest of his albums have something redeemable on them.

besides Kamasutra and ONA Live and Indigo Nights:

worst:
PlectrumElectrum
3121
Newpower Soul (This is a Prince = Symbol-album since it bears the " prince " on the cover = imo!)

Wow The Black Album is imho the twin sister / twin brother to Sign O' The Times = a 9.5 out of 10 imo.. an excellent album "on the edge",

The Black Album I sure disagree! biggrin

TBA, is 1 of Prince's finest albums, imo = the true funk-bibel... music

Ok let's just disagree here.. wink

For various reasons, I don't consider Indigo Nights or Kamasutra as Prince albums, but they'd definitely be in the bottom 5.

The consensus is that Newpower Soul IS a "Prince" album (not sure I agree) but here's my list:

Worst: N.E.W.S. This is not world-class music, I'm sorry. There are quite a few moments I like, but not 1 hour of it. Coming from the guy who released Venus de Milo, Alexa de Paris, MADHOUSE, I expected a lot more. If this EXACT recording was marketed under another artist, it would be panned too. Sounds like he was bored one Sunday and just kicked this out.

Newpower Soul. There are a handful of good tracks on here, but also a few stinkers. This was a toss-up between this one and HitNRun Phase One, where I have the same argument. If this was a Top 5 list, HnR1 would be on it too. Having said that, this list is purely relative. I DO listen to Newpower Soul on occasion, and do enjoy it. There is just SO MUCH stellar Prince material that overshadows this release.

PlectrumElectrum. I was torn on this one, because Prince himself sounds re-energized and amazing overall. Boy Trouble and Aintturninaround almost sink this album for me. I do love at least half of this album though, so I might have re-evaluate. I got this and Art Official Age on the same day, and that AoA album is brilliant.

(Dis)honorable mentions:

HitNRun Phase One
MPLSound

Batman, Diamonds and Pearls and Songs from the Vault. New Power Soul and the Black Album are not far behind. I don’t really count instrumental albums and the music club releases that were intended to be more like bonus material. I’m sorry, but Cindy C, Le Grinde, Supercalifunkasexy and Dead on It ruin the Black Album for me.

I think it's more akin to Lovesexy (which I love!) than "Sign O' The Times", even sharing a track (When 2 R in Love). Le Grind, Dead On It and (arguably) Superfunkycalifragisexy wouldn't feel misplaced on it as filler tracks.

It's not that I don't like it, but it's a short one (7 tracks only, if we consider When 2 R In Love a Lovesexy track) and there are songs I don't like at all (2 Nigs United 4 West Compton and Rockhard In a Funky Place), a track I feel I should like, but feels somewhat a bit too dark/somber for me and I tend to skip it (Superfunkycalifragisexy), tracks that are just OK imo (Le Grind, Dead On It) and the two I really like, but don't listen too often (Cindy C and Bob George for being a bit weird/ different).

On a side note, I think Cindy C could be a twin sister / twin brother to Chelsea Rogers (another song that I like).

Top 3? Top 30 more like. He didn't release one great album after Lovesexy. He still released lots of good music, but his albums were never as great as they used to be. Always full of ups and downs. And there were always enough ups to keep you interested, you just had to wade through all the downs.

Rave Un2 The Joy Fantastic

NEWS

Kamasutra

Rave is a bad album, even though it contains a few great tracks. One of his worst "eras" imo, as well.

NEWS just doesn't impress at all. It's meandering and uneventful.

I've never listened to Kamasutra all the way through. That fact alone qualifies it as a least favorite.

This thread only shows how Prince fans are different when it comes to his music. Some of the albums mentioned here are in my Top 10 list...

.

But my list is
1) Chocolate Invasion
2) Slaughterhouse

3) Planet Earth

The Gold Experiance and Diamonds and Pearls are the absolute worst. You’re Prince and you’re trying to release MJ type crappy cheese? Gross. Those two albums are the absolute worst. Prince should have never went cheese in the 90’s. It’s like Miles Davis or George Clinton wanted to try NKOTB boy band songs. No. That was a decade long and lasting mistake that he luckily redeemed himself in the 2000’s forward.

1. HITnRUN Phase One - It’s not a coincidence that the album I like the least is one not produced by Prince.
2. The Truth - Most orgers love this album, but I just can't get into it.
3. MPLSound - A sad attempt to sound like his younger self.

diamonds & pearls is the only prince album i truly dislike. aside from strolling & money don't matter, there isn't a song on it that i can listen to with any enjoyment.
i don't have the kind of vitriol for mplsound in me that i've seen coming from some people. i like a few of the ballads, & dance 4 me is one of my very favourite prince tracks, but it's still near the bottom of everything he did.

mplsound was 7th from the bottom in moonbeam's recent poll, and it certainly always seem to provoke a lot of antagonism every time it gets mentioned here as far as i can remember.

i honestly don't dislike it that much myself, as i said already. there are about 8 p albums that i find average, poor by his standards for sure. i think pe & mplsound are the worst of that bunch, but i can still listen to them & find things to enjoy in them. d&p is the only one that makes me cringe almost all the way through.
