I guess these releases need to happen BUT why no extras?!

I mean, if we're allowed to complain about this, I think the only way this release is worth it is if it's the '99 album, the remix version, and the '89 version. There'd be something interesting about a release that was in conversation with the way Prince actually constructed his projects. Which was, apparently, to continously write songs and to continously mine his archives. Of course, I would love a disc dedicated to the '99 album outtakes, too.

Prince recorded drums and vocals to tape only in the last MANY years. Everything else was digital. I've spoken with Hans-Martin Buff via email about this. The drums and vocals recorded to tape were then dumped into Pro-Tools. It's all digital in the end and the sound difference between CD and vinyl is down to mastering only, not a better source. You can't master vinyl as loud as CD or the needle will bounce off the record.

I quite like the Rave album. It's not a great album by any means but there's some pretty good songs on there. But for the life of me, I can't figure out why they would release this set. Surely anyone remotely interested in this would already have both Rave albums and the DVD. And if they're aiming for younger people who weren't around back then, why choose THIS album? One of his most high profile commercial failures. Makes absolutely no sense. "But it's got a new 28 page booklet", you say. It's like that Simpsons episode where Lisa points out the futility of people buying another Malibu Stacey doll that's the same as the one they already have, only this new one comes with a new hat. If whoever is in charge of this release thinks people will react the way Smithers did to the new doll, they are sorely mistaken.

It’s right that these albums are made available again, they’re not intended for hardcore fans who have ‘everything already’, but there are hopefully lots of people who will buy these re-release albums, because that’s the only way they will finance the vault releases, that in their minds at least won’t sell much. Not sure how true that is but I understand the thought process that is behind it; get the OOP albums back out there, then hopefully focus on the vault.

Seriously you can't understand that everything between 1994/2010 is out of print ? . You can't understand it s artistically a shame, and that Sony signed a contract to re release them all? . You can t understand that Rave is among these albums ? . Why in hell would Sony release every other albums but not this one particularly? Why? . I m an hardcore fan since 2 decades and I never could afford me RaveIN2. Now here is my chance. Here is the chance of every Prince collector to buy at a reasonable price these albums on CD/ vinyl, introduced to everyone in every country. . These 23 re Releases are unexpected miracles, especially for vinyl collectors. . Nobody gave a fuck about PR deluxe, so please don t tell me there would be an audience for a special edition priced higher of Rave, or Gold...You are asking way too much. . Maybe there will be unreleased tracks in the 23 albums box set, set to be released next December. Maybe not. Frankly, I don't care about unreleased tracks from that era, from what I ve heard on the internet. I just want to own these real albums. . You should keep your money and complain about the others who didn't want to buy PR deluxe.

I bought Rave Un2 The Joy Fantastic from ebay for about 15 euro back in 2012. My point is that the potential market for vanilla re-releases is extremely small. Most Prince fans have them already. The ones who don't have them all already can listen to them any time for free on the likes of Spotify or even YouTube. And the play count on his later albums will tell you all you need to know about how successful these 23 releases will be. And when the inevitable happens and these albums don't sell, the chances of unreleased vault recordings seeing the light of day gets even worse. That is why I don't get the excitement about 23 albums being re-released.

That is why I don't get the excitement about 23 albums being re-released. You bought an old copy of RAVEUn2 for 15 E, that's already wice the price of what a true 1999 mint condition would be. RaveIn2 was way beyond that already high price level. . There is no market for costly reissues of the 1990' s and 2000's. When you look at the PR sales in 2017/2018, after the PR deluxe release, most of the sales comes from the vinyl version. . When 1999 re-entered the charts this year, 95% of the sales were from the vinyl 1CD reissue. . So RaveIN2 vinyl has most chances to sell than a pricey 2 or 3 Cds RaveuN2 box Set with unreleased tracks from an era that nobody cares, I m sorry. . I think the lack of availability of Prince catalogue is on the contrary damaging commercially the potential of Releasing in the future new material albums. . 23 albums, even if they sell an average of 30.000 each worldwide, that makes 600.000. Copies sold. . They have a YouTube channel that absolutely needs exposition. . PR deluxe contained 75 minutes of new music+ a whole CD of B-sides, but 90% of orgers complained about it, and 50% refused to buy it. . That's why they tried something new with Piano...1983. Now how can someone becomes a fan of Prince and buy a new album if he can't have the 1994/releases, that is to say something like 50/60% of his career. Seriously?

I'm pretty sure they aren't expecting huge numbers from this release - it's more about the long-term, eg, new fans wanting to buy his catalogue and being able to purchase the currently out of print works without having to resort to eBay. [Edited 1/3/19 23:34pm]

But they CAN buy those albums already. They are available digitally. In fact, they can already listen to them completely free on streaming services and on YouTube and judging by the play count on both, there is very little interest. So, if people won't listen to his music for free, what makes anyone think they'll buy it on CD, which is essentially a dead format at this stage. The ship has sailed on trying to get new fans. At this point the focus should be on trying to appeal to his current fans. And re-releases, whether they have a couple of outtakes or not, is not the way to go. The Purple Rain remaster flopped because his fans already had the majority of the so called "unreleased material". I don't consider myself to be a big collector or anything and even I had all but 3 songs. People won't buy what they already have. Whoever is in charge of future releases needs to focus on putting out music which has never leaked. That will at least guarantee sales among his current fanbase and with the right marketing, they might also get a few new fans as well. Also, 15 euro for a physical CD is about the regular price for albums here. Even shops like Tesco, which sell CDs for cheaper than the likes of Tower Records or HMV sell new albums for about 12 or 13 euro.

Lol but why are you denying the right for 2/3 of Prince discography to be, at last!, Available in stores ? What is the point ? . Vinil sells better than CD for an "old" artist such as Prince. You can look at the charts on Amazon. Most of the fans and music lovers doesn't care about buying an album digitally, they want a physical copie. . There is little to no interest in streaming for the moment, because the large audience doesn't know these albums, because they were out of print for years, so there is no credit given by music critics, etc. That s a too negative circle that must be put to an end. . Gold and Call my name are currently among the most viewed tracks on YouTube, beating any SOTT tracks for instance. If it were available, I m sure TMBGITW would be among the 10 most viewed tracks. . These whole re release project will create more interest in P discography. . I agree they should have, at least, filled the void space on these albums with b sides of the era. It would have cost nothing, even if purists here would have complained about it. . The same should have been done a decade ago with WB albums : fill the empty space with b sides, longer version... . I loved what was on PR deluxe, every tracks were pure discoveries for me. If you are a compulsive illegal downloader, you can only blame it on yourself. You will never be satisfied, because I m sure 90% of the unreleased tracks are already available on illegal download ; and I don t believe in undiscovered gems. . Prince knew the worth of his songs, and if he didn't release them, it s because they are lesser material than what was released at the time. From what I ve heard on YouTube, outtakes from the 90's are horrid. . I eagerly waiting for a deluxe treatment for every WB albums, but I won t hold my breath upon it; since obviously you all already own most of the unreleased tracks and B-sides, extented version s, etc. . In case nobody noticed, both Come and Black album are in a juridic void and don t belong neither to WB, nor to Sony. The priority should be to re release them, and after we could envision to release new album material.

That's 16 years worth of unreleased material. Some of it might be crap. But at least it's something we haven't already heard before.

Really good points made on both camps, I personally want unreleased Material, but I also understand the need for the OOP albums to be available. It’s fairly cheap to make cds especially if they are already recorded and have artwork (Low overheads? Just print/make and distribute). They must have crunched the numbers and would be happy with say 10-20k sales per album over a number of years. I doubt I’ll buy any unless there is something new about them, even sound quality improvements might tempt me (although the latter albums have ok fidelity to me, maybe a bit loud).

The sales of PR deluxe were disappointing, as the behaviour of many fans to not buy it because they already downloaded illegally some tracks. Thanks, guys. . But on the other hand, the sales of the PR vinyle are still great. . When Prince died, one week after HNR2 was physically released worldwide. And it tanked, despite being new material. . And when you look at the disappointing sales of his last albums (3rd eyed girl number s were catastrophic), clearly, nobody cares about Prince new releases. If people want something new, it s from the 80's only. . Each time Bowie, Bob Dylan, Roger Waters, McCartney, or even Kravitz, Janet Jackson, D Angelo etc. Released an album, they sold much more than AOA, 3RDEG, HNR1 and2 COMBINED, and without much promotion. . So I think the better way to interest people in Prince again is in rehabiliting his already existent catalogue. I m sure we will see soon better review s for RAVE (for instance) that it ever had in the music press. I m sure people will check the music videos on YouTube, etc. . The material from Musicology or Gold has already better success in streaming than SOTT or Lovesexy. It s not that impossible to rehabilitate his post WB catalogue. . Personally, I would have not waited all this time to release something new. I m pissed off too at the way the estate handled the legacy. But Now thatt the momentum of his death is gone, the only way to attract new fans is to rehabilitate his catalogue. Or else, his audience will shrink year after year.

. Dude, there's a Bob Dylan box set of all his albums that contained numerous remastered albums that weren't available (in their remastered editions) before. © Bart Van Hemelen
