It's funny how a weak ass album like D&P gets a pass from so many Prince fans and yet Rave, which is a much stronger album imo, gets slack because it didn't succeed commercially. If commercial popularity was based on the quality of the songwriting alone, then Rave would've been a smash and D&P would've tanked. Just goes to show how important marketing and good timing is in the industry. [Edited 12/27/18 3:27am]

I love both albums but I get what your saying, I think it's down to the Singles from Diamonds and Pearls that make the album, if you took the singles from the album and just had Diamonds and Pearls without Gett Off, Cream, Insatiable, Money Don't Matter 2 Night and Diamonds and Pearls... the album wouldn't be that strong or good for that matter but because of the singles, the album is very strong. I agree with you as I really like Rave and I believe it is unfairly hated on by most people but as you said, marketing and good timing!

Insatiable is the piece of crap of the album, it sucks. I will never understand the love for this song. . Jughead is not the best song ever, but it s a fun interlude, showcasing the talents of the band. This is really cool and funny. I saw this song performed two times by the band last year or so, it was a great moment.

It's no worse or better than the 100's of other ballads he wrote, a lot of which sound the same to me. Every album had at least one and they were never my faves (except "Damn U" and "I Hate U") but I would never say they just sucked.

"Slow Love" is probably the worst to me and it grinds SoTT to a complete halt (the film and the album). I never got the lust over "Empty Room" and "Adore" either but fans seem to jizz over those over those tracks. I never hear much of diffrence really.

I'm actually a fan of most of his ballads (up through 1996). But I agree, Slow Love is terrible, especially in it's placement on Sign O' The Times ... he could have replaced it with so many other better songs from that time period ... Power Fantastic or Crucial. I think One Kiss At A Time was probably his last great ballad. I think Insatiable is up there with his best ballads like Do Me, Baby and International Lover.

In my opinion, not his best work. If you completly removed all the rapping and took off Jughead it would be listenable. But it had a couple of gems on it like Money Don't Matter 2 Nite. I think the extended version of Insatiable is one of his best ballads. And as much as I love the song though, the lyrics bother me slightly: "I got a Jones, Martha Oh yeah, it be like this -" I don't get the reference to Jones, Martha - what am I missing? Someone enlighten me.

I might be wrong but I always took the 'I gotta jones, Martha' thing to mean that he was 'jonesing' for Martha, meaning he was craving her (whoever Martha is). There's an old Cheech and Chong song called 'Basketball Jones' that has a line in it that goes 'I gotta basketball jones' and that's what the meaning was in that song- I got a craving for basketball.

That's what I thought, but since I don't know who Martha is (and I feel like we're supposed to) it drives me insane everytime I listen to the song ...

EVERY ballad Prince(r.i.p.) recorded was COMPLETELY different. In fact Prince(r.i.p.) was very underrated as a balladeer. He was up there with the best of them. Like Smokey,Marvin Gaye, Donnie Hathaway,Luther & Curtis Mayfield.

Prince's last great ballads was "Revelation", "Breakdown", When She Cums", & the Grammy award winning classics "Future Baby Mama" & "Call my Name" to name a few.

Had a lot of fun reading these stories. They're from the designer of the D & P album cover.

"...when I saw Prince’s proposed album cover—a tight close up of his face, with two fingers in front of his lips, and his tongue sticking out between them, I thought it was kind of…ridiculous....Prince had enormous charisma, knew it, and knew how to use it. He also knew how to use silence and pauses in conversation to intimidate people, and he did a great job with me. I spoke respectfully and generally about why I thought a different image might be better. He glared. At one point, he asked with incredulity ‘What do you want me to do, wear overalls like R.E.M.?’ A bit later he said ‘Maybe I should have some clothes made for you’. I was wearing jeans and a button up shirt; he was wearing lime green skin-tight pants, high-heel boots, and a day-glo green, pin-striped, see-through shirt."

And, "Why can’t I have a hologram?"

We´ve had a couple of "Martha" threads in the past and that name popped up a couple of times in Prince´s songs. There was even a thread where Michael Bland answered some fans´ questions regarding Martha. lol

Look them up, especially the one with Michael´s answers.

By the way, his orgname was ebonyrhythmbuddha and his threads were really informative. This was before Prince passed away and I was suprised to see him post on the org.

Generally not a fan of ranking, and I know I'm asking for it with the unusual choice. Still, She Spoke 2 Me has got to be in my top 5 P songs.

So maybe in my case, gum chewing is a clue to a great P song. If anyone hears gum chewing on anything else, please let me know. Don't want to miss something great!

It's also fun to watch P on stage with gum. He can not only walk, he can sing/play and chew gum at the same time.

I always thought "Martha" was just slang for "chick" or "woman" like "Stella" was around the GB period.

Not crazy about D&P myself and, like most "hit centric" Prince albums I get tired of most of the tracks. It's more an album for the mainstream than it is for hardcore fans. Love Symbol was kind of the other way around and TGE was just plain GOOD, period.

Regarding the seemingly LOATHED "Jughead" and "Push", I think the musical elements of those tracks are really fine and good but, again, bad rapping drags them down. If they were instrumentals (like "Northside"), I think they'd hold up better. then again, I like "Life o the Party" so wtf do I know? And if Prince had found someone who could, you know, actually RAP I think the hip hop elements would have been fine.

Tony just kind of yells, raps too fast and never changes his delivery, his pitch, his tone or his timing at all so there's no flow to it and it never has time to fucking breathe. I don't LOVE rap but i don't hate it and generally can tell a good rapper from a bad one. Listen to someone like Eric B, Q-Tip, Chuck D. or, hell, even Eminem and hear how their delivery and word play becomes PART of the song. Tony not only has shitty and really corny rhymes but also just sort of barfs them out really fast and loud with no style or syncopation at all. He sounds like he can't even keep with himself.

Prince is better at "rapping" (or at least that "rap" delivery) than the guy he hired to fill that exact role. Having Prince himself handle the "Live 4 Love" rap would have taken that track up a notch as well but leaving it out entirely would have been even better.

I like Thunder, Daddy Pop, LOVE Gett Off and Live 4 Love, $ Don't Matter, Willing and Able, Walk Don't Walk and the instrumental parts of Jughead and Push but Cream, the title track and the ballads are kind of meh.

Diamonds and Pearls has bona fide classics on it. Rave does not. That's why D&P gets a pass. There isn't a single song on Rave as strong as Gett Off. There isn't a single song on Rave as strong as Cream. There isn't a song on Rave as strong as Diamonds and Pearls. Diamonds and Pearls has plenty of awful crap on it, too, but it has the classics that Rave lacks.
