Agree. 92-96 will always be my golden era. And I guess you're right; it should start with D&P/91 really

I don't think the gold ever really stopped. There were always plenty of shiny nuggets around if you were willing to dig.

I loved the whole ride.

That wasn't a golden era. He was ridiculed for the name change, he had no big hits after '94 and couldn't even sell out arenas in Britain and Holland, countries where he had the strongest fanbase. In the 80s, Prince was popular with fans, critics and the general public alike. That's why it was his golden era. You simply cannot say the same about the 90s, no matter how much you like the music from that period.

I don't think that is what 'golden era' means. If we have to say 'there were golden nugget' laying around if you were willing to dig. That cannot be a 'Golden Era'

1980-1989 we did not have to be willing to dig, it was just exploding everywhere, whole albums, Bside long version, proteges, non associate artists etc

D&P, like most of Prince’s lesser albums, still had a few Gems. But, imo, this was one of his least interesting Eras. Too overtly commercial for my tastes and Prince’s art. I must admit that his Arsenio performance kicked a$$.

In my opinion, not his best work. If you completly removed all the rapping and took off Jughead it would be listenable. But it had a couple of gems on it like Money Don't Matter 2 Nite. I think the extended version of Insatiable is one of his best ballads. And as much as I love the song though, the lyrics bother me slightly: "I got a Jones, Martha Oh yeah, it be like this -" I don't get the reference to Jones, Martha - what am I missing? Someone enlighten me.

I might be wrong but I always took the 'I gotta jones, Martha' thing to mean that he was 'jonesing' for Martha, meaning he was craving her (whoever Martha is). There's an old Cheech and Chong song called 'Basketball Jones' that has a line in it that goes 'I gotta basketball jones' and that's what the meaning was in that song- I got a craving for basketball.

Insatiable is the piece of crap of the album, it sucks. I will never understand the love for this song.
.
Jughead is not the best song ever, but it s a fun interlude, showcasing the talents of the band. This is really cool and funny.
I saw this song performed two times by the band last year or so, it was a great moment.

I guess "golden" just means "popular" then?

Muscially, I liked his output pretty much throughout his entire career. Sure, the consistency wasn't always there but that was in large part due to the sheer increase in volume and, to some extent, simply getting old. Happens to everybody. NONE OF US are as good as we were in our prime. I never cared about people raggin on him for the name change, the freaky shit he wore, his odd mannerisms or his drop in record sales. My man was bold as love and did what he wanted which I always admired and was what got me hooked in the first place. I went "Uptown" and never looked back.

AS the old saying goes, "they can't all be jams" but two of his largest selling records were D&P and Batman which, IMO, aren't all that great so...I mean...fuck popularity and record sales as a yardstick from where I sit.

I brought up the Musicology through the Super Bowl and R&RHof run since people seem to framing "golden" along those standards (people liked him). I never measured him like that and was always more taken with how he lived his life, built his legacy and remained wild throughout. I never cared how many records he sold and I found plenty...PLENTY of gold throughout his entire run. There were ALWAYS good songs to find if you went and looked.

Charts are for kids. Real music lovers always knew what was up.

It's no worse or better than the 100's of other ballads he wrote, a lot of which sound the same to me. Every album had at least one and they were never my faves (except "Damn U" and "I Hate U") but I would never say they just sucked.

"Slow Love" is probably the worst to me and it grinds SoTT to a complete halt (the film and the album). I never got the lust over "Empty Room" and "Adore" either but fans seem to jizz over those over those tracks. I never hear much of diffrence really.

I have made some less thoughtfull comments during my three years or so on this site. Your comment though sir, is just wrong. Take a listen to the original outtake on the D&P Beginning bootleg. As one user wrote and reviewed on that outtake "He could tear the fucking sea with that falsetto". That demo is a highlight for me in his entire body of work 1976-2015 and definitely a highlight on this album. Jughead is just unbelievable how bad it is, however great musicians you have on your team.

The rapping sucks, however, I still find the album enjoyable as a whole. I was a bit put off that the track "Diamonds and Pearls" was not "International Lover's" sleazy cousin.

It's funny how a weak ass album like D&P gets a pass from so many Prince fans and yet Rave, which is a much stronger album imo, gets slack because it didn't succeed commercially. If commercial popularity was based on the quality of the songwriting alone, then Rave would've been a smash and D&P would've tanked. Just goes to show how important marketing and good timing is in the industry.
[Edited 12/27/18 3:27am]

Not posted for ages but read this and had to reply...you say IMO well IMO there is no way Rave is a better album that D&P. Absolutely no way. D&P kicks Rave's butt everyday. In fact if you remove Jughead and Push it would be one of his best ever albums.

I will concede that some of the songwriting on Rave was spot on BUT the production is simply horrible and symptomatic of Prince's "plastic production era". However, the songwriting is definitely not stronger than D&P...IMO

I was 5 years old at the time of the release, but I remember well this era.
At the time, music videos of the top 50 each week were an event for me.
It was like a Michael Jackson or a Lionel Richie album in term of popularity from my side of view way back then.
.
I was really amazed when I discovered a decade later D&P hadn't reach the 20 millions mark and that Money Don t Matter 2Night wasn't like #1 worldwide, because the song was a huge success on radio.
.
This is surely my favourite Prince album. Very Accessible and very good.
I was even more amazed when I discovered the hate with Tony M on the org. I think it's flow, rythm and lyrics are excellent.
.
His long rap on LIVE4Love is fucking great, legendary. Overall, his interaction with Prince was perfect.

Always makes me double take when I realise how young some Prince fans are. Man you were 5 when D&P came out. That just makes me feel sooooo old! I was 22!
