that critcal thing you mention started with me on lovesexy, i was starting to not dig the wacky "spooky electric" type of shit as well as seeing him at his rehearsal here in seattle when us crazy fans were peering through from outside, I saw him pimp walking and just thought "boy is he pretentious" and then i couldn't bring my walkman in because he was being a dick about those things. Still loved the man and the music but he was certainly trying at times.

absolutely not, but, you have to remember, that was the first time seeing him with my own two eyes. seeing him do that when he wasn't really "on stage", he was just doing a soundcheck, it struck me as really pretentious, but that was the first time I ever saw him, cat was still with him at the time too. It was just me maturing, I simply had to seperate the music from the man. not hard.

Cool to hear about the cutout bins! Beats what they had us do when I was working in a bookstore. Tear the covers off of (paperback) books and dump them in the recycling.

We have a "remainder" bookstore in town that's often busy. Much nicer to see such books moved at low price vs. trashed. Books from that store undoubtedly get trashed as well, but at least some go to customers happy to acquire them. : )

Once again, excuse me. I didn't realize that was the first time you'd laid eyes on him "in person." What you say makes perfect sense! I'm also very touched by what you say. I sometimes find it difficult to separate the artist from the art when the art touches my soul the way P's music does.

At least with P, his complications mean that he seems to be a man with plenty of things I'd like to embrace along with the slew of things I'd like to jettison. Kinda like the way I react to myself, and to many of the dear people I'm lucky to actually know.

I gotta laugh at one thing. I can't decide if I should be disappointed or pleased that he likely pimp walks when nobody's watching.

he changed throughout the years, in many ways, into a totally different, better person. I loved the post death stories from all these folks who worked with him. We are all a mix of good and bad, most of us hide the bad and exaggerate the good, Prince didn't hide the bad so much when he was young, he hid the good like most people hide the bad.

1999 is an absolute favorite here. Can imagine falling head over heels with 1999 as an introduction. : )

Am assuming you don't mean the bolded absolutely literally, so that remaining albums rank down in precise chronological order, but maybe I'm wrong.

Anyway, are there a few albums or songs, from Symbol to H&R II, that you somewhat enjoy?

I was 11. I remember staying up late to watch the Arsenio Hall Show promoting the album, and I was SO hyped!!! That show remains my favorite Prince TV performance.

the thing is, unlike most other artists who get lazy, if nothing else, Prince was working, always working. so his absence from the forefront of the pop world did not mean a comeback in terms of him ever stopping, as it would with most artists, he was as sharp as could be at the time of diamonds and pearls because of his nonstop work ethic, people forget that, he may have made a million mistakes, put out some non-commercial albums, improperly promoted all of them, but the one thing he did better than anyone except for maybe James Brown was he stayed on his chops at all times.

I loved it at the time. The Gangster Glam look and new yellow Cloud really went together well.

The music might be some of his most dated, though. It is very much "early '90s" whereas stuff from the 2 albums bookending are not as much. I dunno.

I loved: Get Off, Violet the Organ Grinder, D&P (song), Live 4 Love, Insatiable and Strolling.

I hated: Push, Daddy Pop. Horny Pony, the horrific choreography with Kirk/Damon/Tony and all Tony M raps.

What is missing from that era is an epic/classic song that is usually present on every release. The songs that I loved above are good songs, but none are in my top 25.

The hit single "Diamonds & Pearls" is is an epic/classic song It went all the way to Number 3 on Billboard Hot 100 & makes a GREAT wedding song.

The Diamond and pearls era would had captive the audience. If only Prince had added songs that were similar and contrast to what Diamonds and Pearls stood for.

It's good if a tad rote. Prince by the Numbers in some ways. Trying on several hats and styles and not as experimental or challenging as I prefer .

I think I'm one of the few that think "Live 4 Love" is a standout.

"Gett Off" hit me like a lightening bolt when it dropped and I was somewhat let down that the whole record wasn't like that but it's really hard to call it "bad". I recall liking that the band sounded like a BAND for once and was happy that his sound felt a tad more organic for a change.
