"Make Yo Mamma Happy" is one of my favorite Prince songs. I play it every single day to get pumped up for whatever the day has in store for me. Learning how it was created in her post was fascinating and makes the song even more meaningful.

*

FACT: David Coleman and Jonathan Melvoin recorded THEIR song Around The World In A Day using studio time that Prince had given them.

*

Princevault.com:

The track was first written and recorded by David Coleman (Lisa Coleman's brother) in early June 1984, when given two days of studio time at Sunset Sound in Hollywood, California as a birthday gift from Prince. When Prince heard the resulting track, he loved it and wanted to include it on his next album. He re-recorded the track and made some musical and lyrical changes.

*

FACT: The song heavily featured FINGER CYMBALS, the Oud, the Darbuka, and the Cello

*

Princevault.com:

Recording Personnel

Prince - all vocal and instruments, except where noted
David Coleman - cello, oud, fingercymbals, darbuka and background vocals
Jonathan Melvoin - tamborine and background vocals
Wendy Melvoin - background vocals
Lisa Coleman - background vocals
Susannah Melvoin - background vocals

*

FACT: Prince flew David to MN in order to record his parts on Cello and the other instruments.

*

FACT: This is the only Prince-related track to give writing credit to David Coleman.

AGAIN - point me to where ANYONE SAID that ANYONE introduced Prince to the Finger Cymbals, or that he was seeing them for the first time in his life.

e

lyrics R worth posting again

[Intro]
Never say die, never say why (Oh yeah)

[Chorus]
Make your mama happy
Make somebody proud
Never say die, never say why
Stand up, touch the clouds

[Verse 1]
Billy got a test in geometry
He didn't study night before
He wants a steady job and a salary
So I guess he got to study more
That's why we are saying

[Chorus]

[Verse 2]
Annie went to college, got a Ph.D
Drive a BMW
All the things Annie ever wanted to be
She was when she finished school
That's why we are saying

[Chorus]

[Bridge]
(Yeah, yeah)
(Somebody proud)

[Verse 3]
People of tomorrow want a better way
It gets harder and harder every day
Don't let them fool you, don't you let them say
You are any less than they are
Baby, you are here to stay!

[Outro]
Oh yeah
Happy
Make your mama happy

No concession needed from anyone paulludvig, because no one was arguing that Prince had never seen or used a Finger Cymbal. The debate has been to argue your statement that Susannah specifically stated she and/or her family "introduced" them to Prince. AGAIN, you take their statements and twist them to fit into your own "anti-Melvoin", or as poppys stated, "Melvoinophobia" obsessed world.

Just to refresh your memory.....bolded below is where you implied that Susannah stated she and the Colemans introduced Prince to the Finger Cymbals:

OldFriends4Sale said:

did U even read it? it is mostly about finger cymbals, David Coleman and Prince. We are not even fully aware she is talking about Make Your Momma Happy until the end because she is mostly talking about finger cymbals. And a recording session. The protagonist is the finger cymbal.

I'm probably not allowed to point this out, but... Finger Cymbals were listed among the instruments Prince played on his debut album For You. Right? So it couldn't have been something he was introduced to by the Colemans/Melvoins.

Violetcrush said:

Where in Susannah's post does she write that Prince had never seen or heard of Finger Cymbals prior to meeting her?? I agree with OF4S....you really need to read the piece again.

*

She began the story by describing the Cymbals, and her family history with the Coleman family playing music in their family homes, as well as, David Coleman learning about and playing the middle eastern insruments. Then she explained how Prince first heard Jonathan and David's song ATWIAD.

*

Susannah's words about Prince and the Finger Cymbals:

*

"One of those songs they would record was, “Around the World in a Day”. It was recorded at Sunswept studios in Hollywood in 1984. During the rehearsal for Purple Rain, Jonathan and David sent a cassette to Wendy and Lisa to see what they thought. During this rehearsal, they stopped to play it for Prince in Lisa’s car. After listening, Prince would only say, “Can I have it?”
This would be the moment that changed the trajectory of his music.
While recording Prince’s version of “Around the World in a Day” Jonathan and David did play the finger Cymbals, while David played his Darbuka and Oud, creating the definitively explosive new sound for Prince. Wendy, Lisa and I sang the backing vocals. I don’t know when exactly, but, at some point when leaving the studio that night, David offered Prince his Finger Cymbals as a gift. Those Finger Cymbals stayed with Prince for as long as I new him."

*

How do her words translate into "Prince being "introduced" to the Finger Cymbals by the Coleman/Melvoin family?? Because David gave his personally owned Cymbals to Prince?? You are clearly putting your own spin on Susannah's words in order to, yet again, satisfy your very bizarre obession with knocking down their relationship/collaboration with Prince.

#63 Finger cymbals feature among the instruments listed on For You.

Which she never said. And that is just you flame baiting and trolling for attention again. Not only did you not do the work and present the information, you probably never even heard the finger cymbal ting. I specifically asked you where, what song, asked what information you had and you posted absolutely nothing. And it as clear to me, you did not even know which song it was used on. I doubt you even have the album.

.

You never replied to it. For someone who is always talking about facts and clarity you never seem to present that. You have no information presented that shows Prince played the finger cymbal sin 1977. If he did, I have no problem with that. But it seems I'm doing the research, NOT you. And 1 ting with a cymbal does not make someone an accomplished finger cymbal player. I was tinging in elementary school. Go sit down somewhere.

Well what song(s) do you hear finger cymbals on? on For You?

Did he 'continue' to use finger cymbals from 1979-1983/84?

.

The thing is David brought in very exotic Middle Eastern instruments and sounds. And a way of playing them. I played finger cymbals in elementary school. I did not play Middle Eastern instruments and manipulate the sound.

Prince played the instrument David gave him on the Parade 1st Avenue open rehearsal show. I don't think he ever played the finger cymbals live again.

Do we know what song (can we hear it) did he use finger cymbals on?

Can you post the credit piece where finger cymbals are mentioned? I never read that, I did read/see the use of orchestra bells though.

If the only reason you are posting is to disparage the discussion. Stop.

Quest has a bunch with different sayings on them. In the film documentary Before The Music Dies (great film if you haven't seen it - it's posted on YT now in 13 segments) he's got on one that says "Wendy, Lisa, Bobby, Mark and Matt" - not sure if the order is correct, but it's the Revolution band members. smile
