Thank you. I remember hearing that a while back. I didn't know that they sang for Melba.
Mike Melvoin was well connected.
That's true. Yes, Mr. Melvoin was connected and also well respected. He and Mr. Coleman were major session players for most of the big musicians during the 60's and 70's. They played on Pet Sounds - how cool is that?!!! Plus so many others. Mr. Coleman played the Congas on Marvin Gaye's "What's Going On" and with many other Motown greats. Pretty cool to be born into those surroundings, but I think all of the Melvoin/Coleman kids used that exposure wisely and were/are talented in their own right. |

What was the differences between Coleman's version of Around the World and Prince's version? When Susannah writes that David Coleman played the oud, does she mean rather like George Harrison played the sithar? Susannah writes that the Colemans and Melvoins recorded an albun together. Is that album available somewhere?
All of your questions have long been answered. Please stop looking for ways to change the narrative just so you can feed your strange obsession with trashing the Melvoin family. It must be an issue with race - the only way to explain your ridiculous comments.

She said when she was on the Dirty Mind tour they toured the Motown museum, and there was a picture of her Fatger on the wall. He played on most of the big records back then. |

Ah. I missed that interview. Thanks! It's a great one with Questlove - on his Questlove Supreme show. The same episode where he interviews The Revolution, Dez, Andre, Wendy & Lisa, and Susannah. One of my favs! |

It’s ironic in that I actually watched BEING THERE this weekend at a film festival. Funny that Prince and Susannah loved that movie... |

Really enjoyed reading this from Susannah. Just the whole musical process going on that night on Galpin. The part where she talks about bringing him the "Constant Comment" tea got to me. That variety of Celestial Seasonings tea was my sister's favorite, and she is no longer with us. Those teas were so popular in the 70's and 80's with the hippie set. It took me back...pachuli incense, hot tea, Indian fabric wall-hangings,black lights, and real music played by real muscians!!
Good morning children...take a look out your window, the world is falling... |

But, does she feel she is the protagonist? I don't know. If Prince was referring to a woman as "Momma" (as in "make your woman happy) in the song then that may be the case, because they were living together at the time. |

I had never considered that he was referring to a lover in the song until reading Susannah's words. I always took it as he was talking about your actual momma lol. |

it is clear he is talking from a maternal standpoint, just read the lyrics
[Intro] Never say die, never say why (Oh yeah)
[Chorus] Make your mama happy Make somebody proud Never say die, never say why Stand up, touch the clouds
[Verse 1] Billy got a test in geometry He didn't study night before He wants a steady job and a salary So I guess he got to study more That's why we are saying
[Chorus]
[Verse 2] Annie went to college, got a Ph.D Drive a BMW All the things Annie ever wanted to be She was when she finished school That's why we are saying
[Chorus]
[Bridge] (Yeah, yeah) (Somebody proud)
[Verse 3] People of tomorrow want a better way It gets harder and harder every day Don't let them fool you, don't you let them say You are any less than they are Baby, you are here to stay!
[Outro] Oh yeah Happy Make your mama happy

Well she was his lover so why is that a problem. But the song lyrics clearly express something not romantic. |

Right, it's just a fun and funky song to express the notion that working hard at something usually yields success, and will make Mother's, friends, lovers etc. proud. * Susannah was just stating the song made her happy and proud to be with him. |

did U even read it? it is mostly about finger cymbals, David Coleman and Prince. We are not even fully aware she is talking about Make Your Momma Happy until the end because she is mostly talking about finger cymbals. And a recording session. The protagonist is the finger cymbal.

Yes, the first part of her story was explaining a bit of hers and the Coleman's family history with music, as well as, David and Jonathan's influence with various intsruments and sounds including Finger Cymbals. She then explained the evolution of the song and her use of the Finger Cymbals. * She was describing how these sounds and additional instruments became important to Prince during that time. It brought to mind the March 1986 1st Avenue Parade show where Prince played the Finger Cymbals when performing the song Paisley Park. |

right, You know how there are early session between Prince & Chris Moon and Prince Bobby Z and Andre Cymone? I hope there is one between Prince & David Coleman. Even if just a little one.
