An Effort to Guesstimate the Amount of Unreleased Material from 1977-1988... Purple Nation -
Just for the sake of giggles and snorts here is an estimate of the number of unreleased items that might be in The Vault, being as conservative as possible using sources that are well-known and generally held in high regard by the community (thevault.com, Tudahl, etc.):
1977-1978:
26 unrelased studio songs 2 Capri showcase concerts 2 Capri showcase soundchecks
Prince Era:
9 unreleased studio The Rebels Sessions songs 2 other unreleased studio songs 16 1979 Prince Tour concerts show 16 1979 Prince Tour soundchecks 42 Rick James supporting act shows 42 Rick James supporting act soundchecks
Dirty Mind Era:
8 unreleased studio songs 30 DM Tour shows 30 DM Tour soundchecks
Controversy Era:
27 unreleased songs 60 Controversy Tour Concerts 60 Controversy Tour soundchecks
1999 Era:
15 unreleased songs 93 1999 Tour shows 93 1999 Tour soundchecks
Purple Rain Era:
7 unreleased studio songs 5 unrelated special concert/performances 98 Purple Rain Tour concerts 98 Purple Rain Tour soundchecks
ATWIAD Era:
6 unreleased studio songs
Parade Era:
69 unreleased studio songs 30 Parade Tour shows 30 Prade Tour soundchecks
SOTT Era:
25 unreleased studio songs 10 unrelated special concert/aftershows, etc. 34 SOTT concert chows 34 SOTT soundchecks
Lovesexy Era:
31 unreleased studio songs 77 Lovesexy Tour shows 77 Lovesexy Tour soundchecks 10 unrelated special shows/aftershows, etc.
So for 1977 through 1988 that would be...carry the one...
~1214 separate peices of music, songs, sounchecks, concerts, aftershows, etc....

. At the current rate none of those will be released anytime soon. Unless the money keeps running out as it does, and if they realize this, then this might change.

Acts like the Stones, Macca and Dylan are all 70+ and still touring. So I don't think there will ever come a time when somebody is too old for rock & roll. But I agree that the Estate should not wait too long. Whoever thought of putting music out for the next 100 years must have thought Prince has the same reputation as Mozart or Beethoven. He hasn't. No orchestra is going to play The Dream Factory in the 22nd century- I don't even know if we humans will still exist then. So put that shit out! Now!

Great stuff!!!!! Wouldn't it be fin to learn that a totally unexpected cluster of tunes were recorded that no one knows about?? Like around 1980 during the Dirty Mind sessions he recorded a whole other album? (or two??)

The real question is: who is going to listen to all of that? And remember, this is only the first ten years.

I would definitely buy a lot of this potential product for sure...at the right price. For example, id pay full per song iTunes prices for a lot of the studio recordings...and for the individual concerts and sound checks I’d pay $5-10 per show, especially for the legendary ones...

ME !! LOL I would get LOST in it all, as I have with all the unreleased stuff I have already

. Hah, you think support acts get (extended) soundchecks. . Also, this 1 concert = 1 soundcheck might be technically true, but that doesn't necessarily mean all of those are interesting, or even amount to much. And aren't some of these concerts matinee performances? © Bart Van Hemelen

I know it is for many, it isn't necessarily for me. Don't get me wrong, I love those years as much as y'all do, but my love for what came later is just as strong, and much more emotionally involved I think. Keep in mind that I discovered Prince in 1989 and became a hardcore fan circa late 90-early 91. The 78-88 Prince is the Prince I fell in love with but he's not my Prince. The back catalogue was one thing but the Prince I grew-up with was the 90's Prince. The Prince of my 20th b-day was Emancipation. The Prince of my 25th b-day was NPGMC and TRC. The OST of my year 2009 (a year I remember fondly for many reasons) is the Lotusflow3r trilogy. Our love for music is associated with how it resonates with our own lives (for example I also tripped a lot on the Electric Dreams OST when I discovered it in 2009, and to me this record will always be associated with 2009, not 1984 when it was released). The 78-88 albums were the albums I tripped on when I dived into the back catalogue in 90-91, and to me they are mostly associated to those years I listened to them very intensively, say 1990-1993. I was 13 to 15 years old, I was basically still a child and those years have become relatively unimportant in the narrative of my own life. Now all the memories associated with 1993-2016, this is my formative years, then my life as an adult... Add to that that Prince's post-1995 unreleased catalogue, whether we're talking outtakes, rehearsals or SBD shows, has been much less bootlegged and documented than earlier years, and you'll realize why it's of great interest to me, maybe greater than the 78-88 vault material. Another Crystall Ball or The Vault is exactly what I want. I agree chronological ordering would be better, but at this point I'd take it all released in one go please, as is. Let us figure it all out ourselves [Edited 10/19/18 3:15am] [Edited 10/19/18 3:16am] My password is what

it's interesting, because I'm always eager to look, but I never see all the threads discussing that latter work 90s etc in detail and such. I look for them though. I'm created someone myself, but they never get much traction.
