Prince Handwritten and Designed Emancipation CD Artwork Work in progress

source

http://www.icollector.com..._i27814262

Extremely rare full package CD mockup artwork for the 1996 triple-album Emancipation, entirely hand-crafted, designed, and annotated by Prince and presented as a gift to Michael Van Huffel, a key member of the art department at both Paisley Park and NPG Records. The full package consists of a CD jewel case and the accompanying mockup inserts. The front cover depicts colorful digital artwork of Prince with his wrists shackled, and the word ‘Emancipation’ spelled backwards and descending from clouds broken by the sun; affixed to the lower right is a large cutout hand in beckoning motion, and both the symbol on the shaved side of Prince's head and word “slave” on his cheek annotated in red ink; the reverse of the front cover bears an affixed circular close-up image of Prince’s mouth, with an array of intricate ink and felt tip designs and patterns filled in and decorating the open edges. The artwork for the inner tray consists of a magazine image of the sun concealed by clouds over the ocean, as well as various other magazine clippings with matching color pattern; and the back cover design is a clipped color image of Prince’s iconic symbol, with “NPG Records” and “Unfinished Demos, 1995 NPG Music Publishing” labels affixed to lower right corner; Prince has added a copyright notice, the album title, and an early configuration for the 10-song track listing in black ink, which originally lists the song ‘Slave’ as ‘Slowly Candle Burns.’ In fine condition. From the collection of artist/art director Michael Van Huffel and accompanied by a letter of provenance.
An award-winning designer, creative director, and motion design specialist, Michael Van Huffel designed advertisements and album artwork for the Paisley Park and NPG Records art department. According to Van Huffel, the Emancipation artwork was presented to him by Prince’s future wife Mayte Garcia, who simply said, ‘He wants you to have this.’ Believing it to be a conceptual guideline for an upcoming project, Van Huffel called Prince’s assistant Therese Stoulil. She confirmed that Prince had ‘cut up a bunch of really expensive coffee-table photo books,’ and that the CD was, in fact, a present. Prince himself allayed any lingering doubts when he arrived in Van Huffel’s office, calmly and tersely stating: ‘It’s for you.’ Although the original ‘Fall 1995’ configuration of the Emancipation album Prince included with the full package is not present, Van Huffel has supplanted it with his own transferred CD-R copy, a mix that is immensely unique in its own right. A tremendously desirable piece of original Prince artwork relating to his landmark Emancipation album, a recording that represents Prince’s long sought-after release from his nearly two-decade-long contract with Warner Bros. Records.

People are so thick sometimes.

Emancipation is not spelt backwards. You start at E and the rest of the letters are laid out in steps going up (to heaven I guess?).

It was part of the RR Prince auction in September, 2017 (page 96):
https://issuu.com/rraucti...017_prince

But it looks like it not was sold there (item 6235)?

If "Slowly Candle Burns" is "Slave", what song is "Slave"?

yeah but what i'm saying is that these tracks leaked all the way back when,
in a time when most leaks were plugged. so where else are these tracks
sourced from that we have in our collections?

I guess like most stuff Prince put on cassette or cd-r, it eventually fondu its way into the hands of bootleggers. With the onset of more digital methods of listening to ‘demos’ the less leaked out.

My 2 cents: this artwork mock-up makes me think strongly that the Sabotage boot Emancipation The Secret Chapter was not simply a collection of related era tracks cobbled together, but sourced from a actual in house CD-R. Exact same songs and sequence; consistent sound quality. And early versions of Slave and Emancipation before they were embellished. This is a great find! We know so little about the evolution ofthe Emancipation project and later album projects generally.

The boot clearly came from this.

A later, 3 CD tracklist appeared more recently, it's listed on Pvault but unfortunately not leaked.

I seriously love this record - I listen to it as a whole much more than Emancipation. I had no idea it was an actual Prince configuartion. It figures - it's great!

Yes - it’s a really lovely record. The final composition is wonderful too but there’s something about even the track listing on here as well as the track selection. The initial mix of the song emancipation it’s really joyful too. I think I heard on the violet realty YouTube she gave her angels was meant to be n here in a longer format what an absolutely gorgeous addition that would be alongside j2tcouh. I think the initial listing feels very pure and quite organic it’s more ethereal than anything else in some places even 2020 and the upbeat track just seem very joyous too. It’s a vibe.

I wonder how this original config evolved to become a 3-CD set. More intriguing is the fact that only 4 tracks out of 10 made it to the final, 36 songs, config. This shows that the original concept for the album, whatever it was, was quite different from what we got.
