An amazing interview! There is an interview that Prince gave on a Japanese music magazin called Cross Beat back in 1999 for Rave promotion and he said he just recorded a new song called Future Soul Song.

Future Soul Song was from 99

Seems an interesting, nice guy. However Militant you are showing a few gaps of knowledge, for example talking about latin music from the orginal 1982 '1999' being done by Sheila E. when she didn't even do any sessions with Prince until the Purple Rain era! Also, it was slightly embarrasing when you said you couldn't hear Kate Bush's vocals in My Computer. I think you can hear them quite easily when you listen carefully. As HM Buff politely pointed out, they were meant to be backing vocals and not a duet anyway, but saying this to the engineer seems a bit tactless as if he didn't know his job.
Otherwise nice, the girl is nice too. [Unecessary personal attack - snipped - June7]

I didn´t understand the part that H.M . Buff comments (24:00) that there´s a cover of another 80s pop-star that Prince recorded for Crystal Ball?? It´s possible or I didn´t understand it? No more info?
Is there any way we can get that interview in Cross beat amokeru?

Militant, Thanks a million for this video and your great interview! The community got a lot of new information thanks to your work!
Btw, contrary to what TheFreakerFantastic says, for me you come across as a really nice guy, neither arrogant nor insecure, but genuinely interested in all things your interviewee has to say, and quite humble, actually.
Additionally, You are not the only one that cannot make out Kate Bushes vocals in this song. This has been discussed a lot before, and i'm with you regarding this topic. I wouldn't notice a guest singer at all in this song, if I wouldn't know there was one. And it sure wasn't Buffs job to decide about how loud to mix these vocals, so that is not tactless at all.

Yes, I was curious about that comment. . He came across well Buff. I like the fact he shared some info but was conscious about sharing anything too personal

It was all written in Japanese. I don't know how to upload pics but i'm trying now... [Edited 7/27/18 4:41am] [Edited 7/27/18 4:42am] [Edited 7/27/18 20:24pm]

I want to know what year Sticky Like Glue was recorded... It really sounds like an 80's outtake.

[Edited 7/27/18 0:06am] Prince and Sheila met in January 1980, so it's not totally inconceivable, actually. If there's unreleased Latin percussion in a song, it's a fairly obvious thought to muse on - you'll note that I didn't state it as a fact. Also, maybe you don't remember but people have been having conversations about not or barely being able to hear Kate on "My Computer" literally since Emancipation came out. Use the search function, and you'll see numerous discussions. Finally, I don't know who you are, I don't remember you ever making any personality comments about me before, and you appear to be literally the only person that feels that way, so I would kindly suggest that you appear to be the one with the problem. Feel free to go and make a thread about how much you dislike me, but don't show up in threads about interviews I've done that take a CONSIDERABLE amount of time, money and effort to create, which I do for free, nitpick on tiny, opinion based things like I don't know what I'm talking about, and then have the nerve to make personal comments about me. That's petty as fuck and worthless. |

He had said Prince was asked to do a new backing for a song by another 80s pop superstar. My guess is it's Bad by Michael Jackson. I suppose it could be Like A Prayer by Madonna as well, but I think it's Bad, based on stories, and rumors I've heard. "That's when stars collide. I am a bitt worried that Buff can't remember any really good unreleased songs from this period (apart from The Divine). The wooh is on the one!

paulludvig said: I am a bitt worried that Buff can't remember any really good unreleased songs from this period (apart from The Divine). It all depends on taste really. He did mention other rock songs that were intended for 'Rave' and some unreleased music from 'The Truth' sessions. I don't think the Madrid 2 Chicago album was mentioned by Buff and we know that exists and I'd certainly be interested in hearing it in its entirety given the two taster tracks we were provided via the NPGMC. Songs such as 'What Should B Souled', 'R U Ready' and Prince's cover of 'Fight the Power' are also mentioned for the Rave period. Perhaps Buff either doesn't rate them or simply forgot about them. I also have a keen desire to hear the full version of 'Funk Radio', but I may be in the minority there

Great interview and a pleasure to watch. I particularly appreciate the focus on Prince's post 80s work and the quality of the questions coming as they do from fellow hardcore fans like ourselves. Many thanks to Casey Rain/Militant.

I've looked for the snippet of this song for a long time but I haven't heard it yet!!!

I'm really quite surprised about this Kate Bush thing apparently having been a topic for so many. Her vocals are really obvious if you ask me, a little buried in the mix for sure, but you'll find them immediately as long as you look for them. Or maybe that's because I'm a hardcore Kate Bush fan, so the texture of her voice is very familiar to me, but there wasn't ever any doubt for me as to whether they were there or where they were. You guys made a great point about how Prince didn't do many of his 90's gems live. I agree. But I do remember that he did do Shhh quite a bit (which is of course was from The Gold Experience but was originally recorded for Tevin years earlier). And I think he did Gold in 2011. One song you may have forgotten from Rave that he tended to do live was "I love u but I dont trust u anymore". But trying to come up with songs on the hot seat so to speak can be hard sometimes. So I understand. Good interview.

Thank you all for the kind words, and WOW at that interview about Future Soul Song. That just proves how much largely unknown info is out there that Prince may have mentioned once or twice and it wasn't noticed. And of course that goes both ways, like when I mentioned to Hans about Prince mentioning "The Divine" in recent years. I agree that there's many gaps when it comes to Prince's 90s (and later work) - I think it's important that we try and close these knowledge gaps by talking to the people that were there. My personal bugbear is that often when people who worked with Prince get interviewed, the questions are quite superficial - usually because the hosts aren't fans, if the interviews are being conducted for radio or television to promote something. And we shouldn't have to wait for somebody to write a book to get new information - the pace is too slow. So that's where Uncovering Prince comes in! Please subscribe to the YouTube channel if you enjoyed it - I'll try to post all new episodes here but it won't always be possible. For anyone unaware, we already interviewed Anthony Malzone, Anna Fantastic, Elisa Fiorillo, Judith Hill, Marylou Badeaux, and more! |
