huh?

I emailed the ad agency that created the ad and asked them what song was used - whether it was a cover of "Take Me With U" or a different song. According to the ad agency, it is a song composed for that commercial, so it's not a Prince cover.

I tweeted Mercedes-Benz official twitter & asked them if it was a cover of "Take Me With U". Their response, "Indeed you are absolutely right".

So yeah, it is "Take Me With U".

so you were just making something up to get your win?

It's enough to use your ears though.

Actually I didn't make anything up. I did tweet them & that was the response. If you care to check their Twitter feed for replies, go ahead.

Plus the lyrics are the same, which - despite the style or production - constitutes a cover.

If you think this is about "winning", you might be on the wrong website. Shoot for Angry Birds or similar.

So the one you mailed if making something up and you take it as correct and come all blazing out with your 'win'. Is that the better description?

Still need to get your ears checked, and have a coffee with the mercedes guy, perhaps he wants to play with you.

Clearly winning is 100% more important to you than anyone else in the thread, sans Bart. Enjoy your one-man contest.

You have a weird way of saying sorry that you dont know the difference between Take me with you and another song.

You have to be one of the most bicker-heavy people on here. I posted something that was the truth, you said it was a lie. Call Mercedes-Benz and complain. It's their words. You tried to shoot the messenger, and have yet to do any research on your own. You offered nothing in return. You lose, twice. If I were you, sugar tits, I'd quit while I was ahead.

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

Someone on Mercedes Benz's Twitter account says it's a cover, but the actual ad agency that created the ad and for whom the song was written says it's an original song (not a cover).

We have a mystery!

Yeah, that's really what it is. I figured someone could dig deeper if they cared that much instead of trying to shoot a messenger. I always seem to overestimate humanity at the worst times.

I don't get it how you can still doubt what you can actually hear? There's no mystery, only a few braindeads and overenthousiasts.

I'm going to go with the ad agency's position and since I am The Org's Authority On "Take Me With U" that should settle it, LOL.

See I think both answers are right. Here's why:

Maybe they see a "cover" as done in the same style or sounding the same. The production and the track is original, no doubt. It's a very different style of music, almost like a country rock, opposed to the light-hearted preamble to "Raspberry Beret" that we know. So the ad agency is correct in that the track is new.

But the twitter response from Mercedes is also right, and a bit more correct, in that it is a cover. The song is a cover with the exact same lyrics; or at least an interploitation of sorts.

A line of a song being the same as another doesn't constitute a cover. How many songs have "Baby I love you" or "come stay with me tonight" in them? Not a cover. But take three lines from a song in the same wording, and it could be a copyright infringement case. Adding an extra "and" doesn't keep it separate (as Vanilla Ice can attest with his defense of using Queen's "Under Pressure" because of a one-note difference).

The song is clearly recognizable, lyrically, as a Prince song or we wouldn't be having this discussion. The artist's interpretation of the song is irrelevant. Using someone's lyrics, it's considered a cover. Yep, the ad agency wrote all new music around it, but "I don't care where we go, and I don't care what we do, just take me with you" is a fucking Prince song.

Well, I JUST heard this commercial and thought the lyrics were Prince's. Whether the song is TMWU or not ...I think it sounds good. Of course I like the Prince version better, but nothing's wrong with a new spin on things. ...All in all, if this is an original track it doesn't matter.

"Take Me With U" is my favorite song of all time. It's the first song I learned on the guitar. It's WHY I learned to play the guitar. My daughter sang it with Prince in front of 20,000 people. It is my favorite song of all time. I am the "Take Me With U" Org Authority.

When I saw that commercial the other day, it never dawndd on my that was "Take Me With U". If it was, it was the worst cover ever made.

But as far as I'm concerned, that isn't "Take Me With U".

Cool dude that this if your favorite and your daughter got invited on stage! What concert and what year did this happen?

Thanks!

She sang with Prince at the Musicology shows in 2004, in San Antonio and the first show in Houston.

Apparently, she sang at the only two Prince shows that were never bootlegged in any form, LOL. All I have is one blurry picture.

9 June 2004 in San Antonio was recorded .... but the bootleg circulating doesn't include a recording of the performance of 'Take Me With U' (!)
