Back in 1988, there were rumors Prince might do a “Robert Johnson” or a “Jimi Hendrix” bio-pic I remember reading that in page six of
The NY post but never seen it ever again. I think either one would’ve been a cool move at that time. What do u all think? [Edited 8/26/18 4:41am] [Edited 8/26/18 4:42am] BOB4theFUNK

I don´t know about the Hendrix movie but I remember that there were vague ideas about a Robert Johnson biopic. Not sure how that would´ve worked out though because I don´t really see Prince playing Robert Johnson, or any other musician besides himself. " I´d rather be a stank ass hoe because I´m not stupid. Oh my goodness! I got more drugs! I´m always funny dude...I´m hilarious! Are we gonna smoke?"

I recall the Jimi story but not the Rob't Johnson. Also, I remember hearing a possilbe Little Richard role.

Even Little Richard wanted Prince to play Little Richard! Haha

Yes, those rumours were going on around that time. Lots of people here compare Prince to Michael Jackson, but back in the 80s, I never really heard that. If he was compared to anyone, it was Jimi Hendrix and when you think of it, he has much more in common with Jimi than with Michael: guitar playing, sexuality, flamboyant looks, mixing rock and soul... So Prince playing Jimi Hendrix sort of sounds like a good idea. And the story of Robert Johnson selling his soul to the devil to play the blues perfectly fit with Prince's ideas about the struggle between good and evil in the Lovesexy/Graffiti Bridge period. But like Kool said, Prince playing another musician... I don't think so. These rumours were short lived anyway.

An interviewer asked him if he ever planned on acting again & he replied “I’d like to play Little Richard”. I think Prince may have wrote down or had an idea for An RJ film though.

They were more than just rumors. Shit, I remember the MTV News broadast with Kurt Loder talking about Prince movies, "And the Dawn", "The Robert Johnson Story" and 2 other movie titles that escape me at the moment.

yep,in late 1989,there was a report that Prince was planning four new movies:
*'Graffiti Bridge'---described as a sequel to Purple Rain *'The Dawn'---described as a street-oriented sequel to Graffiti Bridge *'Dark Of The Moon'---described as a documentary on Prince's career *'The Robert Johnson Story'---Prince would star as the legendary bluesman
His manager at the time was Albert Magnoli and apparently the two of them had major plans for movies.

Unfortunately, when GB flopped,it basically killed the plans for the other three films

I remember reading a short news about the Robert Johnson biopic in 1985, as Prince's second and forthcoming movie. The Colors R brighter, the Bond is much tighter

funny, as focussed as he was on music, that's how unfocussed he seemed to be, coming up and discarding projects, abandoning other artists careers, cutting short his own promos as soon as they got going. In some ways it'll never make sense, in others it makes perfect sense, once you spend all the energy on something, creating it, usually, you just want to leave it because it's exhausting getting things perfect, just exhausting.

The Robert Johnson Story would have been an interesting project.

Especially the music. Prince on acoustic guitar (The Truth avant la lettre) doing a Robert Johnson cover album. Yeah, that would have been the most talked about album of the year!!

prince couldn't have played him though, robert was way darker and had a totally different look.

I also recall MTV doing a brief news segment about it.I was really excited about this news.Prince seemed very serious about his movie career.Such a shame that Graffiti Bridge ruined all of these (very ambitious) plans

Not really. Prince was a musician, not an actor.

.
Jerome could, though! Prince could play the devil at the crossroads. Mavis could play the wise old sage who tells him not to go to the crossroads. Morris could play "Alfred", Robert Johnson's wise-cracking sidekick.

ok, I couldn't even see prince as little richard, looked nothing like him. Eddie Murphy was considering at one point but always asked "how do we shoot the dick sucking scene" other than that, he would have been perfect. Little Richard deserves better documentation of his life, he has only one halfway decent docu that I've seen. I never watched the biopic though.

That same year,I read in a magazine that Prince's next movie would be titled Prince Of Darkness and the Morning Star.I'm assuming that this was a tentative title for what became Under The Cherry Moon.

The Jimi story was just a rumor. In 1988,Prince's manager denied that he was planning to do a Jimi Hendrix biopic.Eddie Murphy's name was also attached to this project but I think it was all a rumor, too.

I'm glad none of those projects happened...I would have liked to have seen "The Dawn" with Magnoli and Blinn brought back in. They probably could have written a good sequel/script involving "The Kid" and dealing with stardom, his father, a new love interest, issues with Morris. etc.

The Jimi bio-pic rumors go all the way back to 1980-82. I remember hearing on the radio that Charlie Wilson (The Gap Band) was going to play Jimi...I also remember reading (in Jet) about Eddie Murphy playing him to show the "comical side" of Jimi. This was back in 1983 when Eddie owned the world.

That's the key right there: bringing in skilled people to help with the movie. At some point before GB began filming,Al Magnoli walked away from the project and Prince decided to direct it himself

Prince was hard to work with, even told people when he hired them "even when i'm wrong I'm right" which doesn't make it easy to work with that mindset. He really mellowed but god he was ridiculous, sometimes his own worst enemy. lotta men are like that though, think they know every goddamned thing which is why i try to work alone, get men together and all they do is bicker like women.
