I don't know how old your students were, but there is a difference between knowing about someone and being crazy about them. In 00s, people usually thought that MJ was an irrelevant freak, but when he died, everyone was suddenly into him and new, younger fans emerged. - By the way, my sister didn't know who Prince was when I asked her full lips, freckles, and upturned nose

James Brown was there twice not long before his passing, with some excellent shows. Bob Dylan two years ago. Tina Turner was there on Letna around MJ's time. Radiohead in Stromovka. Metallica about every year. George Michael did cancel at the very end though. I did miss the Stones there but was at Jackson. Madonna had a superb show in Prague. Chili Peppers ok. And loads of others... But some of the very biggest names skip us and play in Hungary (or Vienna in P's case, lately)

You often hear chat show stories from various stars how they are in the middle of nowhere, where they expect no one will recognise them, and suddenly some guy in a rainforest is pointing at Will Smith and shouting, "Fresh Prince!!"

. Fair enough, but even if Prince was walking in the streets of Phnom Penh, Beijing or Mumbai and someone would scream "Prince", everyone else in the street would be like "Who?" and shrug. You may be recognized and annoyed by a person here and there, but you won't end-up with a crowd chasing you as you would in NY or Paris. . Also, it depends who you are: movie stars are more well known in Asia because Amercian movies have become common, and pop stars from the last 10-15 years are also more easily recognized than older ones. The planet is shrinking fast. Typically Star Wars has a very small fanbase in Asia, at least did until the recent revival, because Western films were very much absent at the time of the OT, and still relatively rare at the time of the Prequels, but the Marvel Cinematic Universe is super popular because it's a recent franchise and every urban young grew-up with those characters (again, don't count too much on people knowing those characters in small towns or villages). . When Prince died I was living in Chennai and the following day I heard Purple Rain played loud in a house, so yes there was some awareness (or maybe it was someone's TV and they'd play it on an English-language channel), but 99% of the people I met had no clue who Prince or David Bowie was, and the remaining 1% was English-speaking elite who'd been overexposed to Western culture. Madonna or MJ they would know, or Lady Gaga and any other recent star, but not Prince or Bowie. When Bowie died, a friend asked me "David who? Do you mean David Guetta?" My students are about 20. Exposure to Western pop culture is quite recent in China. Only about 30 Western films are allowed in theaters every year, but of course the internet changed a lot of things. It's hard to evaluate: like I once told my students they (urban upper-middle class, English speaking, educated) may have more cultural references in common with a Western kid than with a kid from a remote Chinese village, but I'm not sure to which extent this is true. . This being said I knew a French girl who was 20 ten years ago and she had never heard of Prince. She was born in 1987 so by the time she got into music, Prince was quite out of the picture (and she wasn't into R&B at all anyway). My guess is that traditional Chinese culture is still part of them. Maybe even more than they realize. I mean, that civilization is something like 5000 years old. Even with communism and capitalism taking over in recent years, that's still only 100 years in a civilization that goes back so far. The only other civilization that I can think of that goes back that far is India. Ancient Egypt was taken over by christianity and islam and doesn't exist anymore. Ancient America was taken over by christianity. So your students have 5000 years of traditionalism and Taoism and Confusianism behind them (once again: even if they don't always realize it themselves.) That's one hell of a cultural heritage and I'm not sure if Lady Gaga is enough to break through that. [Edited 8/28/18 10:33am]
