P was nowhere near Mozart on any level, and Zappa and Zorn are far more prolific than he could hope to be, including the vault. Fans of P believe him to be on Mozart's level, no one else, and Duke Ellington would qualify for that socalled title than P.

i tend to agree, it's a lot of hard work plus talent plus the right environment. i always thought of his singing as the best example of his work ethic, he really only had a falsetto when he started, he didn't feel comfortable doing full songs with his lower register until 1999, and an even better example of his work ethic was his dancing ability, it's astounding to this day how he went from the spastic moves he did on AB to the variety of moves he did on the PR tour. So, therefore, when he tried to tell people they could do more, it was because he knew it from personal experience. He was known as a bit of an asshole to his employees but more than one has said he transformed their self-perception through his methods.

^^@PeteSilas....I had to laugh at the "spastic moves" part of your post, because Prince did have some weird dance moves, all his own.

I never interpreted it that way. Selling your soul comes in more pedestrian ways.

Exactly ! - And by the way, by the famous words of Tom Waits ; "don't you know there ain't no devil, it's just god who's drunk" - "The whole problem with the world is that fools and fanatics are always so certain of themselves. And wiser people so full of doubts" (Bertrand Russell 1872-1972)

i definitely don't know everything but i believe evil spirits influence people and some evil people use religion and good deeds as nothing more than a mask. once, when i was writing a song i went through a period where i got sick and a little delierious, i had visions of demons floating around looking to cause trouble, it was wierd.

IMHO when P felt he was getting close to a pact with the 'devil' he recognized it and ran...writing 'slave' on his face and doing what he could to break free to the detriment of his fame as others would like him to have but he had what he needed...music and freedom...and despite going against the grain he sold out concerts and had the love and respect of his fans and many, many musicians until the day he died. He had success on his own terms and I believe that is what he truly wanted. Being bound by others controlling his work would have been his deal with the devil...but he broke free. ya, but problem is, a lot of that is just interpretation, i don't, each and any of our interpretations are valid to us. for example, the creepy backward shit on darling nikki when played it says the lord is coming soon and then has hahaha like it's mocking the very idea, all interpretation and I try to be respectful personally, of the different interpretations.

my personal opinion/interpretation was that was directed at the critics, writers, "mama jamas" who Prince seemed to be obsessed with in a wierd way. going back to all the critics love u in new york he was writing songs about how the big shot writers in the major pubs were feeling about him. In the RS interview around the time of graffiti Bridge he mentions that the critcs were "starting to get it" and there was an article in musician magazine where the critic approached Prince at a party and said "the lovesexy cover is meant as a symbol meaning you're being reborn right?" and Prince took a liking to the guy and invited him closer to his group. And.., for some crazy reason, he was supposedly obsessed with what people here were saying about him. as i've said, no other major star would give a fuck what his fans were saying on some board, i'd be shocked if springsteen ever looked up what people say about him.

Hmmm...well I have listened to that many times and as it is in the recording played forwards it says, "Scared boy, sleep on your back, Good Night, son...." then some vocals. At least that's what it sounds like to me! Good morning children...take a look out your window, the world is falling...

Von Daniken, similar authors, symbolism, numerology, astrology, mysticism, ouija boards, etc., etc., etc., were very popular in the late 70's and 80's.

When the hell would Prince have time for this shit? I don't even have time for ouji boards, or finding some devil to sell my soul to. And I'm not a workaholic, prolific artist who recorded daily, mentored other artists, toured around the world, practiced and rehearsed to the bone, managed a studio, and romanced/boinked a lot of women all over the world. (That's just off the top of my head.) I'm an average working mom with aging parents, a needy lap dog, and a mortgage. If I don't have time, he sure didn't have time. It's a hurtful place, the world, in and of itself. We don't need to add to it. We all need one another. ~ PRN

the time issue is one i wonder about a lot, not with any spiritual stuff but with women, women are draining, most men can't keep up with the demands of only one, Prince supposedly was a ladies man but I kinda think it has to be exxagerrated because there's no way to get work done with even one woman wanting your attention. I do know that he may have been good at setting boundaries (as in not taking calls from mayte when he was working) but no woman is going to put up with that kind of thing for long. The spiritual stuff? I could see him making time for it like I do, i pray, sometimes for hours a day if I feel like I need to and I don't really have time for a lot of things either (no relationships for me-friends, girlfriends and hardly any family).
