Not about being wrong or right...

Piano & A Microphone 1983 is the first posthumous release by the ESTATE that was PLANNED after his death.

Prince4EVER and PR DELUXE are the first posthumous releases, after his death that were planned before his death, simple.

[Edited 9/10/18 9:07am]

Feeluup, you haven't read my post, i said that DISC 2 was not planned before his death. The decision to release those songs was made after his death as he had previously refused to provide them. So you can't really call it a planned release.

Oh god u orgers... Every little detail, disc 2 disc 3, the sound, the liner notes...

Yes I know disc 2 was not planned before his death. I was talking about the pr remaster that prince provided wb in 2015, i already said he didn't include any extra songs...

“17 Days” — Prince

.

By Marty Kennedy, Scene Writer

.

Someone call Baby Jessica because the ’80s are back! This summer, the Prince Estate decided to posthumously release some of Prince’s unheard live tracks in a new album titled “Piano & A Microphone 1983.” While the new album will be available in its entirety Sept. 21, one of the singles, “17 Days,” has already been released. Another single from the new album was also released, “Mary Don’t You Weep,” which appears in the new movie “BlacKkKlansman.” “17 Days,” while originally a track on Prince’s 1984 album “Purple Rain,” is now a live recording, featuring solely Prince’s vocals while he plays a piano, just as the title of the soon-to-be released album suggests. This live, unedited version adds a new wave of passion from Prince into this old song and provides a new depth to the style of Prince’s music: more soul and more emphasis on the vocals. The song even includes a solid minute of The Purple One scatting and playing the piano, an unusual style for his music. Providing a less poppy and more heartfelt rendition than the original, “17 Days” is just the piece to listen to for some Prince nostalgia.

PRINCE As soon as the shock of Prince’s 2016 death started to fade, there were murmurs about the vault. An exacting, prolific songwriter and producer who released no shortage of music, Prince was known to keep another lifetime’s worth to himself. Because he died without a will, it’s all fair game now. As the estate sorts through the musical riches, expect plenty of unreleased rarities like “Piano & a Microphone 1983,” a collection of nine tracks Prince recorded alone on cassette at his Minnesota home studio. In addition to early versions of “Purple Rain” and “International Lover,” the set, which calls back to Prince’s final solo tour, includes the 19th-century spiritual “Mary Don’t You Weep” and a cover of Joni Mitchell’s “A Case of You.” Warner Bros. Sept. 21. (Coscarelli)

Thank you for the links. Such a pointless song though, as far as I’m concerned. It really goes nowhere, does it?
I’ve always wondered whether he was improvising this when he recorded it (can’t remember what Duane’s book said about it). In any case, as a peek into Prince’s creative process it’s interesting. As something I want to listen to more than a couple of times... not so much (I assume I’m in the minority, but it doesn’t do anything for me).

Odd question perhaps, but is "Mama, what's this shaking me?" a reference to his epilepsy, or is it a musical reference?

It really is a bare bones sketch of a song and the hiss of white noise is very audible.

I can't imagine even the most hardcore fan considering this any more than a curiosity.

All the songs so far are very fragmented and partial. This and 'Mary' only have Prince singing one line.

With a vault full of such riches and soundboard recordings of full songs with Prince solo on piano, I can't really consider the spotlighting of this song and kind of material as anything other than utterly pathetic.

I agree. 17 Days is brilliant. The arrangement of Purple Rain is interesting because it is so different to how he played it later on. The rest for me is a curiosity. I predict I will listen to this album about three times. I hope I’m in the minority and most fans will enjoy it.
It’s not all bad news, though - we’re now closer to the Tidal release. And until they announce what that will be I’ll keep my hope.

NME on "Why The Butterflies":

.

“This is Prince reaching for something,” said Lisa Coleman of The Revolution. “This is revealing and personal. I love this side of Prince. I think this might have been where his thoughts of “When Doves Cry” came from. The examination of self and family relationships… and butterflies. I can almost hear his heart beating”.

.

If they keep this up most of the album and its liner notes will have been posted before it is in people's hands. wink

Is there any info when this was recorded? It's not mentioned in Duane's book and the closest I've seen to a time frame is 'some time in the spring of 1983'?

That is not the full album though, only the three tracks already released. At least here in the UK.

I don't know where they're getting the "January 1983" date from. There's zero evidence for this, and it's much more likely this is something from the fall of that year.

Interesting quote:

it’s a relatively small percentage that we’ve digitised and reviewed.

Hmmm, could have sworn that a couple of months ago they claimed the entire contents had been digitised. Which I said was complete BS, because it wasn't possible.

This is exactly what should not be happening, fuck this! What's in this vault and what they're doing with it should be public knowledge. It wouldn't hurt the brand, and it wouldn't make Comerica pass for a sack of assholes!

The journalist posted a section on Twitter that isn't in the article, but which seems to go deeper into the process of how this release (and others) was decided upon:

OCR'ed so the text can be found by search engines:

.

I mean it's very difficult to say, frankly, what Prince's intentions were on some of these things, although I can tell you that within the very small group of people who are contemplating what might emerge and making decisions about what actually will see the light of day, I'm very, very, very cognisant and respectful of the spirit of the endeavour. Meaning we tried to take what we think Prince would direct us to do with the most seriousness possible. I mean, it's not something that we just quickly put together and say, 'We love this, we're going to put it out.' We think through the process in a very, very methodical way and we use our best judgement a lot of the time because he was a fickle guy and no-one is sure what he would be thinking.
