"nothing quite like Piano & A Microphone 1983 exists in his catalogue"

what about One Night Alone: Solo Piano and Voice"

That’s a bad comparison. Did you miss the part about him not planning on anybody ever hearing this. ONA Live he got to pick his favorite performances.

alandail didn't talk about ONA live. Why do you bring it up?

Amazon have this for 12.99. That is extortionate for a 35 minute shoddy recording of Prince messing around at the piano.

This will be the first release I don't ever buy. What in God's name were they thinking of releasing this. I have heard it and it is nowhere near worthy of an official release. How can anyone describe it as mind blowing

I think you've made your point well enough! lol

I'm not excited for this but I'll be buying it. It's not what I want or would have asked for but I do want to support official releases. If none of us buy it and no money comes in from official releases, how long do you think they will continue?

You are right. Sadly, I don't think this release will sell well at all. The Estate's reaction to that will be what I'm interested in seeing.

I'm quite happy for the release. I think Estate is in a moment of transition between contracts on rights, digitization of tracks and have preferred to have a pubblication in 2018 with a "nostalgic" and compact album, rather than something as angry as Purple Rain Deluxe. Or nothing al all.

IMHO if they could have had to immediately release a "Nothing compare 2U" compilation, taking advantage of the success of the youtube video. If they did not do it, IMHO means that they were not ready, either from a technological or contractual point of view.

So: I enjoy this album, waiting for Tidal next year. I think the first album after Tidal could show the real direction Estate will take.

I welcome cleaned up versions of any rehearsals, so yea, will be picking this up. As a choice, I love that they are going with this type of release. It does't come across as a desperate cashing in of P in an attempt to appeal to everyone. Seems as if it will appeal to a small faction of his base, like myself, who love this type of shit. P's rehearsals are some of my favorite versions of certain songs. Whether it's just him or P w/ the band, those rehearsals are freakin' gold that reveal tidbits of P's personality that fans would not get to see under normal circumstances. Love the feeling of being a fly on the wall while P or P and the band are working. Hope the Tidal release has some of the Revolution rehearsals! If you are looking for suggestions, Tidal, hit me up razz!

I appreciate everyone’s comments. I, like many have mixed feelings about this being the only released album of “new” material for they ear. I would be much more on board, like mentioned above, if this was a disc included in a multi disc set .. but I am still going to buy it.
.
I was just curious... for those who are gong to buy it, what format are you gong to get.. cd only, lp only, or deluxe?

No, he's referring to the fact that this is a candid, not intended for release recording which sheds light on his creative process. Which is literally THE FIRST PART OF THAT SENTENCE.

It seems more likely the reviewer never heard One Nite Alone. He also talked about the cover of A Case of You without reference that Prince released a cover on ONA.

[Edited 8/17/18 19:46pm]

ONA is a studio album with mutiple instruments, vocals, lame sound effects and songs that were FULLY-WRITTEN AND INTENDED FOR RELEASE.

The thing we're talking about is Prince sitting in a room singing into a mic while playing piano trying to work out and finish writing some songs. In some cases, exploring ideas on originals. A primitively-recorded example of him dicking around.

Here's a more concrete example for you:

ONA = Neo Manifesto Book

B&M 1983 = Worn spiral notebook Prince wrote some lyric ideas in.

See the difference now? It's pretty clear.

I’m glad that they asked Jill Jones to write liner notes, although after her reaction when PR Deluxe came out they probably didn’t dare not to ask her! Anyway, I always love to hear from Jill!

Just heard it but... Man this whole release is so underwhelming... The sound quality isn't good and he's shouting instructions throughout the song, is this my echo? Turn the lights on... Turn the voice down... Etc... Such a underwhelming release. This should've been a bonus disk with a real deluxe edition... The estate is terribly wrong for this being the first release.

Ah, it is what it is, not intended for release. That said, as a sonic upgrade on what we had before I'm still enjoying it. 17 Days is my favourite Prince song most days as well, i've always loved this version. Yes i'd prefer a complete piano version formally recorded but i'll take what I can get.

I have a feeling the physical sales will be real low on this one...

any lovin is good lovin. so I took what I could get.

I love it, I paid $20 a disc back in the 90's for platinum to hear the glam slam ulysses tracks with a microphone hidden in an orifice, so for $12 count me in.

If you have boots, you have to buy official releases, sorry that is my opinion.

and I love this tape, did when I first heard and like it now.

I think it will allow a bit of his genius show through to maybe some people that had no clue.

I just want more .........

Parade deluxe, dream factory, roadhouse garden. let's go......

Music is the best...

Folks, the new album is STUNNING.

Just think about it....

Sometime in mid 1983, fresh off the success of 1999 but before he recorded his seminal masterpiece PURPLE RAIN, Prince sat at a piano in his home recording studio, pressed click, and played and sang for around 35 minutes...just free-flowing MUSIC, one song after another.

Several of the tunes are early, embryonic versions of songs later recorded and made famous, including Purple Rain. 17 Days, and Strange Relationship.

Folks, this is so intimate you can hear the sniffles as Prince fights a cold...and the between song banter is hilarious too...

An intimate portrait of an Artist Hard At Work...and alone...

I’m loving 17 Days and very excited to hear the rest. The complaints on here are one of the reason I tend to avoid this place when something new drops.
