I had a notion about Princes hip pain, before it was publicly known

From the one night alone tour, i honestly knew. It was my Father who said after watching Prince, "How can such a small, petite person not get strain on his hip moving around and carrying that heavy guitar."

I never deeply thought it as a problem, just an opinion. But in hindsight i wish i had said something.

oh really? lol ..we all did..or those with sense..in the 80's we thought that. The shit he would do onstage in heels et were akin to being an athlete. Always thught that "in a few years he's going to feel that." He's not the only one in the biz who dealt with physical pain etc. Most of them do/are.

Some folks don't buy the argument that Prince had pain issues especially after the hip surgery/replacement or whatever it was. Is that a possibility? Or do other pain issues come into play. I am not a professional but I can't imagine he didn't have any pain (when off meds) considering how active he had been on stage and how active he still was on stage? Did he just endure pain for the camera and stage (being added by a few pills and adrenaline) and then it hit him badly later, you think?

Anyone 50 and over will experience some kind of aches and pains in their life, it comes with aging, so of course Prince probably suffered from them, especially after years of jumping off of high speakers in high heels, along with doing all those splits that he used to do.

Not to mention the splits he would do, multiple ones at a time! And jumping off high equipment while wearing heels!? Of course he was going to have pain. A man's hips are narrower than a woman's hips which are made to allow for opening up during childbirth. A man's hips aren't made for doing splits.

And just age itself. As we age we feel everything we've ever done to our body! I remember after I turned 51, I had gotten down on the floor to play a game with my daughter and when I went to rise, my knees suddenly didn't want to lift me back up. It took me a few seconds to realize what was going on. I had always been able to get up, spent a lifetime getting up, and suddenly my knees didn't want to lift me? I sat back down and had to laugh because that was the moment that I realized, "You idiot, you're getting older and your body is letting you know it!"

People forget or haven't paid attention to how much activity he did on stage after 2010 (that seems to come nearly to a halt in 2015) . Now, if he were superman, this would indicate no pain. But I don't think he was superman-- he was a 50 somethiing year old man straining his body past the point he should have. Pills and adrenaline (and determination) might have gotten him through the performance, but I can't imagine he would have been too comfortable after he got in the car on the way home without some kind of assistance. Also, why would it just be hips--I ask the professionals on the other pages? He used his hands, back, legs, wrists, shoulders, knees, and legs quite a bit as well. Advil might help if you live a more sedatory lifestyle--I imagine. Maybe, I am wrong. But even at my age, I get pains from standing too long and I am not that old.

To been honest I never heard from it or any fans saying it, not to say it wasn't true but I only heard it from my Dad. Yes is sad he only had minor surgery maybe the proper one with blood transfusion would have saved his life.

To be honest, its hard to know what he had. The folks in the Investigative reports kept calling it hip replacement. But who knows? They were young people. Maybe, they just didn't know the difference.

I remember on the org about ten years ago, some people started posting things like "I wish he would just get his hip surgery" and stuff like that. That was the first time I heard about hip rumors but I didn't know if people were just being catty or trying to be funny or something.

When I saw him in concert the last time in 2009 I did remember noticing the was he walked to his microphone wasn't as natural and fluid so I remember at the time thinking "Oh no, maybe those rumors are true?"

A couple relevant clips...

Here are dance solos from 2011, each a bit different but all eventually involving the hips. NOw, I realize this isn't as strenous as his 80's/90's stuff. But this is the kind of dancing he was doing after his hip surgery. This isn't low impact. NOt long, but not low impact.

https://www.youtube.com/w...fTMbaY2VTE

This is him brief dancing in a way that involves the hips...2014 Paris...Look at the 19 minute mark.. He is in decent health but after the dance, he stiff-legs back to another spot on stage (now, maybe its a pimp walk but this is the only time he does it through the clip) . Then when he does the dance again, he subtlely holds his hip. Then the moves get much less pronounced the third time around. He soldiered through, but I think it probably hurt. at least a bit. I imagine pills dulled the pain a bit. But I can imagine what he felt like later.

https://vimeo.com/217608682

According to Sheila, he was on pills during the 2011 tour. Yes, the surgery was successful. But this was some high impact dancing.

Link to article about recommended exercises after hip surgery. It says low impact...I wouldn't call what prince was doing low impact or easy on the hips. How could he do it without some assistance?

https://www.arthritis-hea...y-recovery..

Living with a Hip Replacement

After recovery, a patient should continue an exercise routine to keep the hip muscles strong and flexible. Physicians typically recommend low impact aerobic activities such as walking, bicycling (or stationary biking), and swimming or pool therapy.

Even after a successful recovery, a replacement hip will typically be less flexible than a healthy, natural hip. For example, while hip replacement surgery improves most patients’ ability to put on shoes and socks, some patients may still need a reaching tool to do so. Other activities that might stress the hip, such as sitting cross-legged on the floor (“Indian style”), may remain difficult to perform.

Despite limitations of the new hip, most patient expectations are met. One study found that more than 87% of the expectations set by patients were met post-surgery. Additionally, 90% or more of patients said their expectations were completely met when it came to eliminating medications, relieving nighttime pain, improving the ability to walk, and improving their ability work and participate in recreational or social activities.

>

Well, we don't know what Prince had done about his hip pain, right? Did he actually have a hip replacement?

>

As for the pain, I can tell you that it can be excruciating.

>

One of my hips deteriorated over the course of about 6 years. It was sometimes painful, sometimes not for most of that time. But I'd categorize that pain as mild to medium. Towards the end (before I had it replaced), it was sometimes painful, sometimes really painful. And that's what got me in to the doctor to get looked at.

>

Examination showed that I had no cartilege left, basically just bone on bone. That's why it was always painful. There were also fissures in the bone, and when those got irritated, that's when it was much more painful.

>

The doctor told me that what could happen with regard to those fissures is that they could lead to pieces of the bone just breaking off. And he said if that happened, I'd want my whole damn leg cut off. I never got to that point. Replacement done, pain gone.

>

But maybe Prince did? I can tell you that the worst pain I had I would call an 8 on a 1-10 scale. I think I have pretty high pain tolerance, but there were times when I'd take a step and literally yelp out loud from the pain of it.

>

If I ever happened to be doing a lot of walking or something, it would be painful during but far worse after. So I'd think it probably did hit Prince badly later (after a show or whatever).

>

I could calm the pain down with some meds. I am not big on taking anything at all, so the most I'd get was maybe some extra strength Tylenol. There'd be relief, and I could resume normal activity.

Prince's range of movement and energy and dancing on-stage rapidly increased after the surgery in 2010, compared to his performances in 2009. He looked his best in recent years to me in 2011, where his performances were again sprightly and athletic and he had a toned and muscular physique. When I saw him in 2014 he looked generally healthy and was impassioned and giving it his all, but did not have the same range of motion nor muscular physique of 2011. At the time I assumed it was because he was more focused on the guitar with 3RDEYEGIRL, but in retrospect he may have had other reasons.

eek Is it true he stopped doing the live band shows with 3rd eye girl, which involved plenty of movement and strain on him, and did the piano and mic tour because he may be in pain so he sat down through the entire concert, and couldnt cope with it.

Dr.S wrote in his notes that it was a hip replacement. P had to have told him that. It would make sense that he was starting to feel his other hip go bad.

I just read that. I agree. I think his other hip was going bad, along with other aches and pains associated with age and overworking. ANd then add to it, the opium symptoms--constipation and nausea. Poor P.

I guess I never thought about strain with Prince, even after hearing Sheila E (in person at Paisley Park) talk about her own injury related to repetitive kickdumming, where she was talking on the phone in her house, and just fell down like her leg gave out. I guess that's when she quit playing a kit for a while.

I think I made Prince into a superhero that was unstoppable in my mind.

So my question is, was the mic and piano tour because of the worsen hip?

I heard that he wanted to contmue with 3rd-eye-Girl, but that his drummer, Hannah, was either pregnant or thinking of becoming so. Not sure when he decided on Piano and Microphone though Andy Allo had encouraged to.

I remember when Michael Jackson passed away someone (can’t remember who it was) wrote about how it broke their heart every time that they saw Prince walking with a cane, and hoped that if he needed it he would get a hip replacement, so that’s quite a long time ago that people were aware (or suspicious) of his pain.

Three things.

1. He started using a cane in 1991 as a fashion accesorie.

2. The autopsy confirmed he did have a scar on his lower hip.

3. He did have surgery, but exact specifics are not 100% known.

Dr Shulbarg's notes stated that Prince had hip surgery on one hip. The doctor also labeled it as hip replacement (not just scar tissue removal). He used a cane in the 80's too. Sheila stated in her police interview that he was using the cane for real after a while.

Yes he started to use a cane during the Parade era... Video of him with at in 1986 arriving at the airport in Japan.

Prince was still doing the splits and dancing very energetically on-stage until early 2000. He did injure himself on the New Power Soul tour in '98 on dry ice, but seemed to recover (see his dancing/splits on the Rave PPV and other performances that year), but after the injury in 2000 was never seen to do the splits or dance in quite the same way ever again.

Having seen him live in '98 I'd be very surprised if his cane was anything but ornamental then. He was simply too high energy and dynamic. Post-2000, I'm unsure. He barely danced on the 'One Nite Alone' tour, which was what he transitioned into following the 2000 injury.
