Dear all,

Firstly, apologies if this is unnecessarily dupliucating a thread, but there doesn't seem to be a way of replying on some of the older, similar threads I have found on this forum...

Secondly - The Work 2.0 - what a treasure trove. Have been getting my head around it with the help of Princevault.com for the last few weeks, but still some tracks remain unexplained:

Volume 6, disc 2, instrumental 1-76 at the end - these are all just individual drum machine samples a few seconds long - what is the significance? Did someone sneak into PP and record themselves pressing all the buttons on the Linn Drum??

Volume 8, disc 1 - the version of 'Poem'/'Orgasm' that segues into 'Come' (which is two remixes gaffer taped together) - where is this from?

That's just a couple I'm thinking about now but I'm pretty sure other people will have similar questions - I guess the org is a good place to start!

For those of us who are (only) interested in unreleased studio songs by Prince, the Work/Work It series are a great introduction. Unfortunately, it still leaves you with more work, as there are many songs in better quality elsewhere.

Personally, I've got a folder with all outtakes with their (approximate) recordingdate as the start of the filename. That way any new version that comes round can be quickly compared for quality and replace (or not) what I have.

It's a pain, because it is a separate folder from my iTunes, which is what I use to listen to music around the house. I've not found a good system for keeping it all up to date.

How is everyone doing it? What is the best strategy for keeping a relatively good archive of only the best leaks of unreleased studio work?

I know what you mean about the size of the job and the confusion all the versions can create.

Personally, I use iTunes to manage all my music and for these vault bootlegs I make use of the playlists - so if a new better version of something comes in, I delete the old one and put the new one in it's place on the playlist.

I find iTunes useful to add information about the tracks and for searching for titles / artist etc. All in ALAC, obvs

After going through the Work It series, I would suggest going through the Blast From the Past Series and find the corresponding org threads about each of the BFTP releases. Typically, there would be considerably effort by a few orgers to note which songs were upgrades from previous releases. This probably not the ultimate solution, but it may save you a lot of time. Of course, it is fun to hear all the releases yourself as you may beg to differ on some.

BFTP is indeed one of the sources that (often) offers a better version.... but sometimes it is subjective.

But seriously, what the hell are those drum samples on disc 2 of Work It 2.0 volume 6 all about??

And now, seriously... what are the multitrack clips from Endorphinmachine, Dance on and Let's Work on the final disc of volume 8 all about?? Leaked from some kind of remix?

On my music drive I've got a Sessions folder.

Goes like this:

1980

1981

1982 etc

> 1982 02 02 Record Factory (or whatever random session/sessions)

> track

> track

> track (etc)

A lot of it is still guesswork though but it's a tolerable way to organize it all
