But how many clothes did he actually have? He had on the same pair of pants all the way through. The same pair of boots. He had one ruffled shirt. An undershirt. The sort of poncho thing he had on when he showed up late to rehearsal and Wendy and Lisa weren't there. The black miliary jacket. The purple raincoat.

All of these things could have been made (or made over) by a girlfriend for next to nothing. He could have thrift shopped the poncho.

The clothes are the least of the improbable things in that movie. lol

admittedly, i know nothing about fashion but those clothes just looked to nice and form fitting to be done by an amateur. as someone has said, in the previous few years, his similar clothes all looked like they were bought at goodwill. the look became clearer, the hair became better coiffed, it looked professional and it was.

I'm an amateur and I could sew those clothes. You don't really know how something is made unless you look at the inside - which the viewer of a movie never gets to do.

The University of Minnesota is in Minneapolis. Maybe the Kid had a girlfriend who was a design student. The rest of the band is pretty well turned out, too.

Theatre (like all art) is about finding a way to say "yes."

We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

Now, why does it have to be a girlfriend or other female sewing his clothes? Men are tailors, too. Based on how good The Kid was with his hands ( the scene with Apple's!!) I think he sewed his own clothes. lol

ok, but in real life we do know that he had a tailor buy that point, i think he had a couple actually. and we know that jill jone's dad was responible for the best hair eras.

I said a girlfriend because the Kid was straight, as far as we know. Do you know anything about relationships?

And do you really think a guy trying as hard as the Kid was to make it in the music business was spending time at the sewing machine? Please.

We're talking about where he was getting/who was making his clothes in the context of the movie - not in real life.

Earl Jones is neither here nor there.

yes i know that, but the reality is still that he had pros. he didn't go dancing around in the stuff he had for controversy. Also, it helped just being prince, most of the bandmembers looked like straight clowns in those clothes. i saw an article once that said the hat he wore in the doves vid was something that "your grandma would wear" but that prince could make it work.

Uhh, first question is irrelevant to what I said and the answer to your second question is yes, why not? Btw, I was referring to all the posts talking about aunties, girlfriends, grannies, etc.

Yeah...I think you're being contrary.

Did you see a sewing machine in the Kid's basement? No. Because there wasn't one. Every second he wasn't banging some chick (and getting her to make his clothes), he was playing music. Just like Prince.

Or maybe his mom made them between drinking and fighting with Francis L.

Either of those scenarios is more plausible than the notion that he made the clothes himself.

Again, this is irrelevant to the subject of this thread - which is about where his character got his clothes in the movie.

So you won't even entertain the prospect that he was a closet seamstress? I don't think we see the entire basement (I'll have to watch the movie again to try to spot a sewing machine). I'll go a step further, I think The Kid put up all the jams and jellies, not his mom--she wasn't home enough!

I don't think that the notion of the Kid being a seamstress is absurd, but, generally, when analyzing art, we can only draw notions and conclusions from what the art gives us. As such, I don't think that the film gives us enough to project that the Kid had any sewing skills. Then, again, there may have been a sewing machine that I may have missed. Thus, it seems more likely, given what most people know about local artists, especially local musicians, who are trying to create a look that represents their musical style, many of them shop at thrift stores because thrift stores are inexpensive and, usually, have a lot of novel/hipster stuff that can be used to create a certain look. Additionally, a lot of what the Kid is wearing can be purchased in a thrift store or a costume store. In short, broke ass musicians have been wearing some form of Victorian/Edwardian clothing since the late Fifties because it's cool and can be generally found in second-hand stores, making it cheap as well.

OK, but then you must agree he was probably doing the embellishments! He did not find those clothes, as they were, in a thrift shop. He might've used a Bedazzler, for instance, to apply those studs on his purple coat. Because the only place The Kid could find those clothes was at a thrift shop where Prince donates his clothes!!

Of course, I can agree that the Kid or anyone else would have embellished what they found in the thrift stores because that's the whole reason why creative folks shop in thrift stores is it's a great way to build or construct a style by mixing and matching. So, sure, it's completely believable that the Kid would have embellished the clothing that he got from the thrift stores. But, the high waist pants, the ruffled shirts, and the trenchcoat were all items that were easily found at most hipster thrift and costume shops.

The Kid's expensive looking clothes is the least of this movie's problems when it comes to plot holes. Think about this for a second. The club owner has 4 bands, The Revolution, The Time, The Modernaires and Appollonia 6. But he only needs 3 bands so he wants to drop one of them. Then it becomes a contest between The Revolution and The Time to see which one stays on and which one gets dropped. That right there is one of the most ridiculous things in movie history. They are clearly the two best bands he's ever likely to have.
The Modernaires would be my choice to go and it wouldn't even be a difficult decision. They've got one song. And it's not that great. At least the singing hookers that are Appollonia 6 might be able to bring in some revenue. They're absolutely crap but there's always a market for sexy girls in lingerie. The Modernaires have nothing going for them.

Maybe he acquired his amazing clothes by demanding girlfriends give him a particular article of clothing or piece of jewelry and they acquiesed? Or admirers trying to kiss up to him would give him whatever clothing of theirs he might compliment or show interest in? He could collect a great wardrobe over time that way! lol It worked with Apollonia, he got a nice boot chain AND a beautiful guitar out of her! smile Actually I've read he kind of did this in real life - asking if he could have a friend's/fan's/whoever's jacket or shirt or whatever if he liked it and usually the other person would give it to him. smile

If the Kid was anything like Prince, he would have most certainly been familiar with secondhand stores. Interestingly, last winter, I was looking for a hat because I had left mine at home and there was an icy cold wind blowing... I entered the first clothes shop that I found - which happened to be a vintage shop - and lo, on a stand facing the entrance, was displayed a beautiful wollen raspberry beret!
