If the Kid was anything like Prince, he would have most certainly been familiar with secondhand stores. Interestingly, last winter, I was looking for a hat because I had left mine at home and there was an icy cold wind blowing... I entered the first clothes shop that I found - which happened to be a vintage shop - and lo, on a stand facing the entrance, was displayed a beautiful wollen raspberry beret!

beret

Did you buy it?

Of course! At only £1.00 it would have been very silly not to. I actually spoke about it in another thread at the time. It was quite surreal to be honest, but it also goes to show that the very percipient Prince knew what he was talking about with that beret reference.

I always felt his bike was too large. He should have been on a smaller bike More cafe racer and less gold wing.

While I tend to agree, I haven't ridden a bike in years and don't plan to do so anytime soon, but the cafe racer, while sleeker, isn't always that comfortable. And, besides, when discussing bikes, we are really discussing the male ego. So, of course, Prince would rock the biggest bike to go with the size of his heels...err I mean ego. lol

Before Prince was having his clothes tailored, he was shopping at the local thrift shops. To be honest, it wasn't that difficult or expensive to be dressing the manner in which he dressed during the 80s because, again, a lot of what he was wearing during the early tours, 80 - 81, were thrift and Salvation Army type stores. I don't know when he had the first trenchcoat designed, but most what he was wearing before the 1999 Tour could be found in almost any city at almost any second-hand type store. Hell, I had a couple of those tuxedo shirts myself with the vest, and I was purchasing that stuff with my lawn cutting money. Of course, I was spending my school lunch money on books and records. When my grandmother realized that I was doing this and not getting home until 6:00 or 7:00 p.m. because I was an athlete, she complained to my mother, "How you gon' let that baby be at school all day hungry and then go play some sport still hungry." My mother responded, "Well, he better go see what Purple Rain tastes like because that's what he spent his lunch money on."

Love it

I hear you on comfort but he wore heels!!! He should have sacrificed
Comfort once again and ditched the grandpa gold wing ish retirement bike
For a dirt bike if need be. But as you say when the ego is at play....

But how many clothes did he actually have? He had on the same pair of pants all the way through. The same pair of boots. He had one ruffled shirt. An undershirt. The sort of poncho thing he had on when he showed up late to rehearsal and Wendy and Lisa weren't there. The black miliary jacket. The purple raincoat.

All of these things could have been made (or made over) by a girlfriend for next to nothing. He could have thrift shopped the poncho.

The clothes are the least of the improbable things in that movie. lol

there are some pretty funky pieces back there, in the picture

looks like the leopard print jack he wore 1980-81

1. the Let's Go Crazy outfit

2. the Take Me With U outfit

3. the Beautiful Ones outfit

4. that leather black jacket he wore when Billy summons him

5. that large turtleneckish top when he comes home/fathers attempted suicide

and like U said he wore that Purple trench with the ruffled shirt and black pants throught the movie
