I like to listen to this when I'm driving home at night, and it gives me chills every single time. Out of the portion of Prince's discography that I've worked through so far, this is easily one of his top 10 best songs. The atmosphere in this track is unbelievable.

Power Fantastic was recorded mid March 1985
a song based on a composition by Lisa Coleman called "Carousel"
according to engineer Susan Rogers
Prince sang in a corner of the room
It was some of the most intimate experience of her career:
She felt at the very center of artistic creation
Eric Leed, who played a lilting flute solo
walked out of the studio feeling goose bumps
"That's one of the greatest things we ever did," he remembered

Susan Rogers noted this song was "Nailed in one take"

Power Fantastic was supposed to be one
of the cornerstones of Prince & the Revolutions
next project the Dream Factory

Late at night, when the world is sleeping
U r frightened, 'cause the Power's creeping
In your room is something u're afraid of
Life or doom is what this feelings made of
Power Fantastic
Is in your life at last
U're a little apprehensive
'Cause what it is is what u want and need

Minor G is the chord of pleasure
It will be played eleven measures
U will see fire, but u're cool as ice
U lie if u say this isn't nice.

Power Fantastic
Is in your life at last
U're a little apprehensive
What it is is what u want and need

Power, Power

Power Fantastic
Is in your life at last
U're a wee bit apprehensive

It's mesmerizing and hypnotic, truly xanax in musical form.

They created beautiful and meaningful music together. Such great chemistry. His performance of this on the ONA tour (I think?) was amazing.

A pity the released version doesn't contain the intro, though.

Hopefully the long version will be included on a future release.

.

It occured to me that it could make sense, instead of releasing a Dream Factory configuration that contains too many released tracks, to release a Dream Factory album that contains all the unreleased tracks from various DF configurations:

.

In no particular sequencing order:

- Nevaeh Ni Ecalp A (intro)

- Interlude – Wendy (interlude)

- It's A Wonderful Day

- Big Tall Wall

- And That Says What?

- Teacher, Teacher

- A Place In Heaven

- In A Large Room With No Light

- Witness 4 The Prosecution

- All My Dreams

.

Then, for good measure, that tracklist could also include:

- The long version of Power Fantastic (having been released on a compilation, it's sort of an orphan song)

- Vision (assuming the rights could be secured, since it was released by Virgin and now belongs to Universal)

- The 1986 recordings of Data Bank, Can't Stop This Feeling I Got, We Can Funk and Girl O' My Dreams, since IIRC those songs were intended for the musical also tentatively titled DF.

.

Well sequenced, that would make for a decent "album" that would represent the last days of The Revolution, without being redundant with SOTT and CB (of course, it would be odd to title it DF without the title track, but hell, who cares...).

.

Not to say all configs of DF shouldn't be released, but such early album configs release would only work on an online store, as they would be too redundant for a mainstream release.

Looks great to me!! And maybe also Splash, Empty Room and Go?? Although I know Splash and Empty Room were out in various forms, and these three may not have been intended for DF or other projects, but they are all great, and within that time period....

They would definitely fit in but I'd say that if I was in charge of the rerelease program, my main concern would be to release compilations of outtakes that sound like "real" albums as much as possible, which means not necessarily making it 80 minutes for the sheer sake of filling a CD (for as long as CD's exist, which isn't gonna be very long), and trying to sequence the tracks so that they flow and work as an ensemble.

While I was very happy with the content of From The Vault & Previously Unreleased (let's call it FTV&PU) in itself, I find the listening experience somewhat frustrating, as there is absolutely no sense of sequencing and pace in that record.

My idea above was to try and be faithful to what Prince had in mind when compiling DF, by sticking to the intended tracks that haven't been released, and possibly adding the 4 "live in the studio" cuts because they were apparently intended for a musical that shared its title with the album.

Of course All My Dreams and possibly It's A Wonderful Day and Teacher teacher would just as well belong on a parade-era outtakes album, alongside the likes of Neon Telephone, Splash and Go, so making those decisions is extremely difficult. I pity those people who are gonna end-up having to make those decisions as curators: it's a huge responsibility nod

Yes, makes sense. Prince always wanted the "full book" so to speak, with his albums. He wanted to tell the story with the sequencing of his songs. Very difficult job for those who have to make the final decision on how these get released....

However.....a VERY good argument for allowing input from those band members and Engineers who played and recorded with thim during this time...

I've thought this. But I would include the tracks that were on CB, as CB was meant to be a shabby bootleg style release, while this would stand as a properly sequenced album.

I like the story behind the recording of this one.

and this is the magic that happened.

This is not something that happens often but when I first heard this one, the intense feeling in it made me break down crying. I was so shocked at that reaction. And then it happened a 2nd time.

From the time it was recorded to the time I heard, it have that much life and spirit on it

Oh my dear friend you have no idea how properly sequenced CB is... lol

Prince took such care in sequencing it, the pace is incredible.

It's a proper Prince album, albeit an odd one, in every possible way nod

.

But regardless, the whole point of my original suggestion being not to be redundant with previous releases, doing this would kind of defeat the purpose, wouldn't it?

.

Of course there exist slightly different edits of most of those DF/CB tracks (save for Last Heart I believe), that would be nice to see released eventually, but that's why we need a digital online store.

Funnily enough, I listened to this one last night and remembered how much I love it.

I see a lot of people talking about the 'atmosphere' of the song, and that's what really attracted me to it. The music is the aural equivalent of a spectre moving slowly across an empty room. Haunting track. The vocal is so fantastic.

This is not something that happens often but when I first heard this one, the intense feeling in it made me break down crying. I was so shocked at that reaction. And then it happened a 2nd time.

From the time it was recorded to the time I heard, it have that much life and spirit on it

Was or Is there circulation of the original track? I only have the live version.....

Crazy, I never even knew that it had been played live but yes, I see on Pvault it's happened.

The studio version was released on The B-Sides in 1993.

A longer version has been intesively bootlegged but remains unreleased.

I've thought this. But I would include the tracks that were on CB, as CB was meant to be a shabby bootleg style release, while this would stand as a properly sequenced album.

So, Crystal Ball - you are saying was sequenced based on sound and/or song style, but not to create a "storyline" per se, as the timeline for the recordings is all over the place.

Yes they're the same recording.

The bootleg is easy to find, it's on many outtakes collections.

So, Crystal Ball - you are saying was sequenced based on sound and/or song style, but not to create a "storyline" per se, as the timeline for the recordings is all over the place.

When you start studying Prince's recording process you realize that many an album features tracks from many many years earlier, even if the bulk of the recording was relatively recent.

.

I don't think any Prince albums really create a "storyline" except maybe Lovesexy, prince and TRC, and yet we are far from a proper narrative even with those. At best, Prince albums are thematically cohesive, which is satisfying, but this has more to do with lyrics and the overall "vibe" than with when the songs were recorded.

.

My point regarding CB is that it's been conceived as a party album or mixtape of sort: the songs are sequenced in order to flow into each other and maintain a non-stop pace: it's in fact a pretty exhausting record (in the best sense of the term), designed in such a way that the listener is washed off after 2 hours and a half of an intense funk marathon.

.

After a few listens, the fact that certain songs have the sound palette of the 80's and others the sound palette of the 90's becomes totally irrelevant: they work perfectly as a sequence, with one track leading into the next very naturally.

.

The problem, if you ask me, is that more than any other Prince records, CB suffered from prejudice and fans' expectations: because it wasn't what the fans had expected, or wanted; because it was 2/3 90's and 1/3 80's; because too many songs on it had already been made available in one form or another; and because they couldn't take their mind off its apparent (mostly apparent, in fact) chaotic nature... The consequence was that many fans wouldn't accept to see the structure behind it, or to simply let themselves enjoy the music for what it was. They just wouldn't let go.

.

Personally when I bought it back then, opened it and saw the tracklist in the booklet, my first reaction was to be extremely disappointed because, I, too, expected a more organized retrospective that would feature more 80's material, as well as songs that were all entirely unreleased. Then I played it once. Then I played it twice. Then I realized I was blown away, and I never cared for any of this anymore: I just enjoyed it for what it was, and I kept enjoying it more with each new listen. 20 years have gone and I've played it to death ever since and yet, evrey time I listen to it again, I trip how how wonderfully that MF flows biggrin

.

Now that's just me, people are free to dislike it. But they should realize that Prince didn't just roll a dice when it came to decide which tracks would be in it and how they'd be sequenced: he clearly worked hard on making it a cohesive statement just as much as he did for any other, more era-focused, album nod
