If I did a Top 30 there would likely be 5 or 6 Prince albums in there.

This question smacks of elitism; espcially on a Prince site. Are we just "supposed" to say, of course, all the real "serious artists" would be our Top 10? And maybe we'd be generous enough to put some Prince in there? On a Prince site?

i hate lists like i said, i love whatever phase i'm going through at the time and alot of artists blow my mind about equally, not just Prince. It's like picking your favorite child or something, it's just wierd.

1999 would be in my Top 10.

Yeah that's why I'd find it extremely hard to make a list like that. For a long time I've been considering to make a series of article for my blog about my 12 favorite album for each year from circa the mid-70's to now, and even there picking 12 records a year might be challenging at times. And the list would constantly change, for example I just discovered and fell madly in love with a record from 2006 that would definitely make the 2006 list. Well, he lists Kate Bush, too, though. But IDK if it's so much a matter of taste as much as a matter of "being exposed to". In all those years here and all those threads about what else people listen to, I've come to realize that about one half of the fandom were people with a pretty big musical culture and diverse tastes, while another half was basically made of Top 40 people, which isn't so surprising all things considered since Prince was a Top 40 artist for a good part of his career. You'd think everyone that listens to Prince is a hardcore music afficionado who likes niche artists and owns thousanbds of records like you but why would they be? Most people have jobs, families, other interests and just don't have time to look for music and gladly take what the mass media feeds them. They may fall in love enough with Prince to come here but that doesn't mean they're gonna get this level of involvement with music in general. Similarly, I've also came to realize that a good part of the fans were mostly rock listeners when I would have expected most of them to be primarily African-American music and electronic music fans like me. I mean given the music Prince was making that would make sense, wouldn't it? But no, tons of rockers dig Prince as well. In a sense that was Prince's doing: he had this incredible, pretty rare capacity to make music that was appealing to pretty much everyone: hipsters and elitists as well as casual radio listeners, people that listened to all sorts of music including genres that weren't primarily what Prince was doing, etc. It isn't surprising that Kate Bush made Mdmeriduis' list as well: she was also such a peculiar artist, at the same time incredibly experimental and yet capable of seducing the masses, that anyone could potentially like her stuff, granted they wouldn't find it too weird for their taste. Most of the people I've met who disliked Prince music did so because they found it too weird, too hard to put in a box. Joshua Tree??? Ugh!!! I think it's way better now than I did when it came out. It's earnestness (ok Bono's earnestness) used to annoy me but that album is full of amazing songs and it holds up incredibly well.

First of all, who made you the authority on what’s tasteful and what’s not? Second, while Ed Sheeran’s subsequent albums have been subpar, his debut was excellent. Third, I feel as though you prejudge these artists without fully listening to the albums. Taylor gets a bad reputation, but RED is an amazing album that contains one of my favourite songs (All Too Well). Fourth, I’m 17, am I not allowed to like some of the music of my generation? I’m sure your elders chided you for also having no taste when you listened to pop contemporaries as opposed to what was popular in their day. Fifth, Adele is a queen and (like it or not) the most popular artist right now. Don’t diss. I might not like Michael Jackson, but I respect that he was a talented performer who was incredibly popular and that there are a lot of people who do like his music.

In my all-time Top 10, Prince is the rule - not the exception. We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

Well constructed reply You're only at the very beginning of your musical journey. We certainly all began by listening to Top 40 stuff, and even the most elitist among us (I'd be among those I guess) still listen to many of those "commercial" artists who were huge when we were young I'll confess something: I like those 1980's Phil Collins records, I have them all You're only at the beginning of your musical journey, keep your ears and eyes open, there's a whole galaxy of music to discover and you have all the time in the world A COMPREHENSIVE PRINCE DISCOGRAPHY (work in progress ^^): https://sites.google.com/...scography/

I have all of those Glad to see Annie get some love. Chewing Gum and Me Plus One are such perfect pop songs, you can't get catchier than those It's funny you'd pick Sweet Dreams over Touch. Sweet Dreams is great, hell all Eurythmics albums are great, but Touch is THE Eurythmics record that blows my mind, it would definitely be among my all-time favorites. So would Vespertine (alongside Debut and Post). It'd be interesting to make a Top 3 "favorite Madonna albums" thread. I think RoL would probably win, though my own darling is by far Music.
