Cabin In the Sky was on TV, last night.

It had one actress that he mentioned in Girl O' My Dreams: Lena Horne.

It also had the song that I'm guessing Blues in C(If I Had A Harem) was based off of, the same song that I think was also done by his band in the Sign O' the Times movie.

The movie's theme was the battle for the soul of a man, the battle between good and evil, which Prince was going through with the Black Album and Lovesexy.

Maybe Prince watched it on TV, during that period.

Just some ruminations by me. Has anybody else seen the movie?

Have I seen it? About a million times.

Prince was a known lover of classic film. And given that this was one of the earliest mainstream movies from a major studio (MGM) to feature an all-black cast, I can't even imagine that he didn't know it well.

I think it's questionable, though, that he would have seen it by the time he did the albums you mention. It was still (relatively) early days for cable TV and classic films were really only shown on the late, late show. Plus, TCM (which owns the rights) hadn't gone on the air yet. If Prince saw Cabin in the Sky, it was probably only by chance - unless he was able to get someone in Hollywood to screen it for him.

I don't think you can deduce that Prince saw Cabin in the Sky based on his mention of her in Girl of My Dreams. Lena Horne was a very famous woman - certainly on most peoples' radar whether they'd ever seen Cabin in the Sky or not. She made another well-know film - Stormy Weather - and appeared at The Cotton Club in her youth. And she had relationships with many equally famous men - Orson Welles, Joe Louis, Vincente Minnelli (who directed Cabin in the Sky) and Sidney Lumet among them.

Lena Horne was on my favorite episode of my all-time favorite comedy show (1st few seasons at least) "Sanford and Son."

And we know for FUNKT that Prince was into Sanford and Son, so much so, Aunt Esther, LaWanda Page, was featured/sampled/shown in at least a couple things of his.
