hE MOST CERTAINLY WAS...while reading my daily Bible reading today, I came across another one , of course he added his own words...Jesus tells us to LOVE ONE ANOTHER", I have read it several but it never hit me until today...smh...There are refeence to the Bible in several of his songs....

I always interpreted his use of "eye" instead of "I", as an indication of internal truths, vs. ego. "I" implies the ego, the little self. It is that which we use to divide and differentiate ourself from everything else. "Eye" indicates a more internal view, an internal frame of mind...or simply a higher state of focus. (Such as the 3rd Eye).

Thank you benni. Your explnation makes the most sense to me. But another thing that Prince did that always bugged me was UR for your, along with writing R U for are you. So if Prince wrote a sentence such as R U coming to the party at Paisley Park with UR girlfriend? and he wasn't careful with the spacing between the Rs and Us, it could really be a mess. I love William Shakespeare and the Holy Bible, and while I fully understand that language has always evolved I kind of see using these one letter words and pictures for words as a de-volving. The punk era band Devo predicted all of this back in 1978, and I'm seeing now that they were quite correct. The idea of humans becoming less understandable to each other is Biblical too.

Prince was writing in text before text ever came into being. He was always ahead of his time. I often wondered how he felt when it became mainstream. To me, when he did that, it was just his way of playing with words. Prince loved the human language and wanted to understand the full meaning of words. I think this is why he had so many dictionaries lying around PP. We have an interesting way of pronouncing things in the midwest, so "you're" sounds like "ur" sounds like "your". In my neck of the woods, where I grew up, they would use the word "youns" instead of "you all/everyone". My sister, bless her heart, still uses "youns". Prince just really liked playing with words, spellings, meanings.

I do agree that language is de-evolving. Kids today don't understand proper language before they start text speaking, and it confuses language for them, I think. Whereas, someone like Prince, had a strong understanding of language, and he used text speech as a gimmick knowing full well how to utilize language accurately and fully. Kids today, often can't write in complete sentences. I can appreciate Prince's use of text speech, from the perspective of understanding he knew language, but kids should really learn the English language before they learn text speech.

"Eye" and "I" are homophones, that is, words that sound the same, but mean something different. The author quotes Brian Morton who says that Prince was influenced by graffiti, and Raúl Rossell that says that Prince popularised shortcode that way. The author also speculates Prince wanted to decolonise English and tried to find resemblances among the words that sounded the same, but had different meanings.
