I'm feeling a bit awkward about Piano and a Microphone 1983. Anyone else? I loved hearing the original cut of Nothing Compares 2 U. It was a bit eerie though, after all these years, hearing a version that Prince didn't want released during his lifetime. Am I the only one who feels awkward about future releases? I have actually gained more respect for Prince since his death as he appears to have been sitting on a lot of material that he could have used to 'cash in'however he was truly an artist! It would be great to hear how others feel about this😎✌❤

He didn't want it released? How do you know this? I assume if he kept it and left it in the vault, he knew it would one day come out as he talked about on the View.

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

Well then releasing these now doesn't go against what you think his wishes were.

Nope, not feeling a bit awkward. He recorded everything. He shrugged and said he probably wouldn't release it but someone else would someday. Let's take the man at his word.
Personally, I looooove his outtake-ish stuff. It's my dream. I'm walking through Paisley late, late at night, following the faint sound of piano flowing down the hall. I sink to the floor outside the studio door and just listen, forever. [Edited 7/13/18 4:14am] And the MUSIC continues...forever...

Right, LovePaisley. I feel like it's going back in time and I'm the little kid at Christmastime who just saw the actual Santa Claus. Watching and hearing the things from long past. Really, while hearing all the trash on the 24-hour news feed & most stuff on the internet, I wish we could just all go back to the 80's ...
I know someone will stick it to me for saying that, but don't care.

The only thing awkward about the upcoming release is actually it’s selection. There seems to be so many more meaningful choices that a choice such as this is pretty weak. I hope that this does not cause a potential reduction in future releases due to a poor response.

Nah, you shouldn't be feeling awkward.

Take a look at some of Prince's interviews and statements regarding the vault and why someone would record then preserve thousands of songs. And chose to record full albums he knew were unlikely to be released at the time of creating them. The only awkward aspect is the choice of release.

I hope that this does not cause a potential reduction in future releases due to a poor response. The Youtube viewing figures for 'Mary Don't You Weep' aren't spectacular at this point. Particularly not for the first vault release. * [Edited 7/13/18 3:34am]

No awkwardness here. I love to hear vault material. He taped the music and kept it for [years for] a reason. I also remember the interview where he said the stuff would be released after he's gone. He knew it, and he could have easily destroyed it if he absolutely didn't want it to happen.

But I keep thinking about a friend of mine recently who asked me if I could show her why Prince is a genius. She knows that anecdotally, but she doesn't *feel* it. And she wants to. I think releases like this are a way to get there--for some people. Prince had so many kinds of music and people have different triggers. What will be that one thing that makes them say, "Oooh, now I get it?" It may very well be the stripped down stuff, where it's just him and it hits you that there were no studio tricks. That it was all really him. And the MUSIC continues...forever...

As we all know it is a very nice recording BUT it will come and go like all the others and we'll soon be speculating about the next release.
