Did Prince really record an album that was another “1999? The Prince 1985 RS interview he mentioned an album he had in the vault that was in the same vein as “1999”. He told Neil Karlen people would’ve went “Wow” when they heard it. Did he really record that album or was he just being coy about it? BOB4theFUNK

I don't recall Prince saying that in that interview But whatever Prince said in any interview, should be taken with a grain of salt.

you're right and you're wrong, i've found that he was often astoundingly honest as well as cryptic and misleading.

it's time that bore a lot of the truths in interviews out, i used to think everything he said was for effect (some would call it lying I won't) but so many things he's said were quite honest in retrospect as well as being disingenuous about other things. A major one is not wanting to talk about MJ's death because he was "too close" to it, at the time I thought no way in hell he means he's hooked on drugs, he must mean he loved michael or something else but no, he was hooked and he knew it.

No, I wouldn't call it lying either, an interview is a very interesting interaction between an artist and a journalist. Nobody does this for fun: the aartist has an album/concert to sell and the journo has a story to write. So that's why we always have to be a little careful with interviews and what is being said there...

I thought the quote was a little ambiguous in that he said he could "put it together" or something to that effect, which could imply that he had recorded enough material for another album, but had not sequenced it as such. In any case, I hope he did, because 1999 is the pinnacle of his career for me, and I love so many outtakes from that era. Feel free to join in the Prince Album Poll 2018! Let'a celebrate his legacy by counting down the most beloved Prince albums, as decided by you!

he also said in lary king interview he could make another album as big as purple rain .....if he had a team behind him

Exactly. But saying he could "put it together" means he had not, so that sort of closes the debate unless you only wanna hear what u wanna believe. What it suggests is that they might have been a tracklist in his mind or on a notebook but even that is dubious when you study the chronology of events, given that Prince launched the PR project quite soon after releasing 1999. Duane's book also confirms that no such tracklist was ever made that anyone around Prince knew of, and that no album was compiled and put on cassette either (something Prince normally wouldn't do by himself but have his engineers do for him). . A possibility, as mentionned by someone in another thread, is this rumor that Prince had this hobbie, at a later stage of his career, of compiling albums of outtakes for posterity or maybe future release. Someone spoke of over 40 unreleased albums, but IDK how reliable that source is. In that case, there might be era-oriented records, including a 1982-83 era record, ready for release in the vault. But sucha record would have been a ssembled long after that interview took place. . The existence of such a collection of Prince conceived albums would be the best news ever, since it would beat any curator-made compilation of outtakes. Let us hope A COMPREHENSIVE PRINCE DISCOGRAPHY (work in progress ^^): https://sites.google.com/...scography/
