You don't need to watch stupid American Idol to know about Prince's music. The music should be passed down from the parents to the younger generation; that's how you learn about good music.

Yeah, but it isn't always like that. It is still that generations don't hear their parents generation music until they are older. My parents were not fans of Prince, and not fans of most of the 80s music I listened to. I mean they might have been fans of certain people who were still popular from the 60s and 70s, they didn't follow Prince, Michael Jackson etc So I learned Prince from peeprs.

.

True; my Mother didn't listen to Prince, LOL lol

.

But, the parents today (my age 40+) who are raising kids are from the Prince-era.

I recorded it but may just delete it. I'm so critical of Prince tributes and covers etc. Maybe I shouldn't be. I usually find Prince covers difficult to do for most singers.

Then you really won't like these covers, you'll probably go running out of the room screaming, and covering your ears. biggrin

rolleyes There isnt one single negative to this. Any focus on Princes music and legacy is a good thing, especially on a stage like American Idol. Sales will again spike and Prince will be a topic of conversation and reverence.

yes there is..the butchering of his songs

I forced myself through the first verse of HCYDCMA and that was all she wrote.

The only person I could deal with fronting a few Prince songs in his own individual style was Stokley Williams with the Revolution.

I guess we will just agree to disagree that sharing and discussing Prince's music on a nationally Televised show might be a good thing for his legacy. I will save my discussions based on nonsensical reasoning for my 5 and 7 year old.

(Insert something clever here)

Don't get me wrong; I think it's great they are putting his music out there. I just don't like these Karaoke shows, that's all, LOL lol

Well, I watched it. None of the performances were great, most were decidedly mediocre--they were mostly just the sort of thing that's always on these shows. I kind of liked the When Doves Cry idea--I think it could work in a similar country arrangement (though an additional voice might have helped, so he could overlap the ends of verses/beginnings of choruses as in the original). Honestly the songs were not helpful to most of the performers. They weren't songs that show off the sort of singing these shows are designed for. Then, if you've chosen a song like I Would Die 4 U and then completely screw up the lyrics (?)--what did you show me? You did nothing vocally and you can't remember words. You should have at least had a more "fireworks" song. I mean, Manic Monday also fell apart after a lyrical freeze--but at least there are more words to that one to mess up (now, she was much more flustered by the mistake and never could get it back together--but the I Would Die 4 U guy didn't even seem to know how terrible things went. He just kept going with his unbelievably misguided self-confidence).

I haven't watched anything else from this season (I did watch quite a bit of what was supposed to be the "final" season)--but boy, they really do seem to have decided to quit any semblance of honesty with these contestants. Between Katy Perry fanning herself and Lionel Richie using forms of the the words "own" or "ownership" in almost every comment (he said it almost as many times as he said "Outrageous" back when he hosted the American Music Awards), I just couldn't believe it.

Yeah, there's a lot of great young talent out there performing at music festivals and small clubs but you wouldn't think so based on shows like American Idol. talk to the hand
